322 Valley Fever infections have been reported in Riverside County this year.  That’s up significantly from last year.  Most of those infected reported also suffering from conditions that made them more vulnerable including diabetes.  One third worked outdoors.  The so-called Valley Fever lung disease is especially prevalent in the Coachella and Imperial Valleys where fungal spores blown off of dry ground – especially dried out parts of the Salton Sea get inhaled.  Symptoms are similar to flu and other respiratory illnesses.  Health officials say to seek professional help if symptoms don’t go away within a week to ten days.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/08/28/322-valley-fever-infections-reported-in-riverside-county-so-far-in-2025-prompting-health-warning/

There will be a grand opening for a new county park in Fallbrook this coming Wednesday.  The 6.8-acre Village View County Park is just west of the Fallbrook Community Center on East Fallbrook Street.  The park will have play zones, picnic areas, two dog parks, a multi-purpose playing field, a skate park, ADA-accessible paths and restrooms.  One of the skate park bowls is, of course, avocado-shaped.  Ribbon-cutting is scheduled for 10a, Wednesday, September 3.  Parking is limited.  Carpooling is suggested. https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/4201829814288-new-county-park-to-open-in-fallbrook-with-skatepark-dog-park-and-more

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down.  The Dow fell a quarter percent.  The S&P 500 declined 7 tenths.  And the Nasdaq was down 1 ¼%.  Gold shot up $41.70 on the Comex to $3,516 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down 60 cents to $64 a barrel.

Today’s inflation numbers were to blame for stock declines – especially tech stocks.  The personal consumption expenditures price index (CPI) released today by the Commerce Department showed that core inflation, which excludes food and energy costs, ran at a 2.9% seasonally adjusted annual rate.  That was up 0.1 percentage point from the June level and the highest annual rate since February, though in line with the Dow Jones consensus forecast.  The Federal Reserve uses the CPI as its primary forecasting tool.  https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/29/pce-inflation-report-july-2025.html

Stock in The Gap fell 10% as the retailer reported coming up short on second quarter sales expectations. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/28/gap-gap-q2-2025-earnings.html

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has told CDC employees that he’s installed an acting director to replace Trump appointee, Susan Monarez who is refusing to leave the post, saying only President Trump personally can fire her.  So far, Trump has been silent.  www.NYTimes.com

Following her lawsuit against the President alleging unlawful firing, President Trump has lodged a criminal referral against Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook alleging mortgage fraud. www.cnn.com

A federal judge has ruled that Trump administration official, Kari Lake overstepped her authority in firing the director of the Voice of America this week, and that by trying to do so, broke the law.  Lake must, by law, have the explicit approval of a Congressional advisory panel to help insulate the international broadcasting agency and its sister networks from political pressure.  That panel currently does not exist because President Trump dismissed six of the seven members shortly after taking office and hasn’t named replacements for Senate confirmation. https://www.npr.org/2025/08/28/nx-s1-5521328/judge-kari-lake-voice-of-america-firing-judge-ruling

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

New this weekend at the movies, four wide releases. “Caught Stealing” is a crime drama centered on a burnt-out former baseball player.  Two more are remakes.  “The Roses” is a dark comedy, this time starring Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch.  “The Toxic Avenger” is a comedy horror starring Kevin Bacon and Elijah Wood.  And the original “Jaws” with Roy Scheider, Richard Dreyfuss and Robert Shaw is being re-released today.  https://www.movieinsider.com/movies/august/2025?view=list

The Food and Drug Administration has approved updated Covid-19 shots for some kids and older adults.  New shots from Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax are approved for all seniors.  But their use is restricted for kids and younger adults to those with high-risk health conditions such as asthma or obesity.  And Pfizer vaccines will no longer be available to any children younger than age 5.  These latest vaccines target new strains of Covid including the so-called “razor blade” strain. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/health/fda-approves-updated-covid-19-shots-with-some-restrictions-for-kids-and-adults

Good news if you’re taking a road trip this holiday weekend.  Gasoline hasn’t been this cheap since 2020, when few people were driving because of Covid.  The Automobile Club says the average price for a gallon of regular in San Diego County is currently $4.66 – down a penny from yesterday, but up 8 cents from one week ago.  In Riverside County, the average price is $4.47.  The nationwide average price is currently $3.20.  Today’s lowest local price is $3.89 at Horizon Fuel Center in Valley Center.  In Southwest Riverside County, it’s $4.14 at Murrieta Sam’s Club and Temecula and Murrieta Costcos. https://www.gasbuddy.com/gaspricemap?lat=33.47948471858488&lng=-117.11720220949229&z=13

On this day in music history – August 29,

  • 1959, The Quarry Men, consisting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ken Brown performed at the opening night of the Casbah Coffee Club in Liverpool.  The teen club was owned by Mona Best, mother of future Beatles drummer Pete Best.  The group used one shared microphone connected to the house PA.
  • In 1964, Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman” is released, going to #1 four weeks later.  The title was inspired by Orbison’s wife, Claudette interrupting a conversation between Roy and co-writer Bill Dees to say she was going out.  When Roy asked if she was OK for cash, Dees interjected, “A pretty woman never needs money”.
  • In 1965, The Beatles played the first of two nights at the Hollywood Bowl.  Tickets were $3.  The concert promoter was local DJ and TV host Bob Eubanks, who the year before had mortgaged his house to make The Beatles first LA concert happen.  Recordings from both years were released in 1977 as the album “The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl”.
  • Exactly one year later in 1966, The Beatles played at Candlestick Park in San Francisco before a sellout crowd of 25k.  John and Paul brought cameras on stage to take pictures between songs, knowing what fans didn’t – that this would be their last concert for a paying audience.
  • In 1970, Edwin Starr began the first of three weeks at #1 with “War”.
  • In 1977, three people were arrested in Memphis after trying to steal Elvis Presley’s corpse.  As a result, his remains would be moved to Graceland.
  • In 1987, Los Lobos began the first of three weeks at #1 with their cover of “La Bamba” from the movie about the life of Ritchie Valens.
  • In 1990, Elton John checked in a Chicago rehab center for treatment of bulimia, alcoholism and drugs.
  • In 1992, U2 became only the second concert act to perform at New York’s Yankee Stadium.  Billy Joel was the first.
  • In 1999, Lou Bega was at #1 with “Mambo #5” – the cover a song composed and recorded by Perez Prado exactly 50 years earlier.
  • In 2009, the Los Angeles coroner confirmed that Michael Jackson’s death was homicide primarily caused by the anesthetic Propofol.  Jackson had suffered cardiac arrest and died at his LA home in June at the age of 50.

Born on this day …

  • in 1924, Dinah Washington, best known for the 1959 hit “What A Difference A Day Makes”.
  • In 1945, Chris Copping from Procol Harum.
  • In 1958, Michael Jackson.
