LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

As we head into a local heat wave, wildfires dominate the news.

A fire that began around noon yesterday near Valley View Casino was stopped at 9 acres just over an hour after it was reported near Cool Water Ranch Road and Quiet Place in Valley Center. There was no structural damage and no injuries.  The cause is under investigation.

There was a small brush fire yesterday afternoon in Temecula Creek just south of Temecula Parkway.  Cal Fire reports it began just after 5p in the 31000 block of Samantha Lane and burned four acres in the creek bed before being controlled early in the evening. There were no evacuations. https://patch.com/california/temecula/small-brush-fire-breaks-out-temeculas-wolf-valley

A larger fire began earlier in the day in San Bernardino National Forest between Anza and Pinyon Pines.  The Rosa Fire forced the closure of Highway 74 with evacuations ordered.  It had burned about 1,200 acres on both sides of Highway 74 as of late yesterday afternoon.  It is currently 5% contained.  Evacuation orders are still in effect for lightly populated areas east of the Santa Rosa Reservation.  The evacuation shelters are Anza Community Center on Highway 371 and Palm Desert Community Center on San Pablo Avenue. https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2025/8/4/rosa-fire

In spite of all the local fires, today’s poor local air quality and hazy conditions are due to smoke drifting south from the 65k-acre Gifford Fire in San Luis Obispo County. https://patch.com/california/temecula/bad-air-quality-looms-over-socal-65-acre-wildfire-rages

A five-month project to improve efficiency and safety for pedestrians at the downtown Oceanside Transit Center began yesterday.  The $2.6m project will reduce the time it takes to walk from the OTC parking lot to the COASTER platform with the added safety of crossing warning devices and pedestrian gates.  Work is expected to continue through December.

Pala will be under a Heat Advisory from the National Weather Service beginning tomorrow, returning to about seasonable temperatures by Monday.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

Mass at Pala Mission Church is broadcast live on Rez Radio 91.3 and streamed live on the Rez Radio App every Sunday at 8a.

In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost 6-2 in Phoenix last night.  St. Louis edged the Dodgers in Los Angeles 3-2.  Pittsburgh rallied against the visiting Giants, winning 5-4 with a walk-off RBI grounder in the bottom of the 9th.  So, no change in the NL West standings.  The Angels beat the visiting Rays 5-1.  Yusei Kikuchi allowed four hits, but just the one first inning run in his six innings pitched.  All those series continue today.

Yankees team captain Aaron Judge came off the 10-day injured list today.  He’ll be back as designated hitter tonight, replacing Giancarlo Stanton.  Judge has a league-best .342 batting average this season.  The Yankees have lost their last four games without him.  https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45908410/slumping-yankees-activate-aaron-judge-injured-list

The Dodgers yesterday activated third baseman Max Muncey off the injured list and place utility man Tommy Edman on the list because of an ankle injury suffered in Sunday’s game in Tampa. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45903045/dodgers-bring-back-max-muncy-send-tommy-edman-il

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow gained a tenth of a percent.  The S&P 500 fell a quarter percent.  The Nasdaq was down a third of a percent.  On the Comex, gold gained $9.20 to $3,435.60 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell $1.06 to $65.23 a barrel.

When business is bad, the solution is to boost the CEO’s pay.  At least that’s the solution at Tesla, whose CEO, Elon Musk had been too busy the first half of this year with other projects and playing government to concentrate on his electric vehicle company.  In fact, he’d threatened to turn his attention to developing AI elsewhere if he didn’t get more control of Tesla.  So, Tesla’s board of directors, which includes Musk’s brother voted to give Elon 96m restricted shares, worth $29b.  The company noted that Musk hadn’t been paid in years because of legal disputes over his 2018 pay package for $56b.  That’s still under appeal.  If it goes through, the new shares would be forfeited.  Either way, quite a reward for a company whose sales are down significantly and whose stock has fallen 18 ½% so far this year. www.morningbrew.com

3,200 Boeing factory workers began their first strike in almost 30 years yesterday.  They’d turned down a contract offer that included a 20% general wage increase, a $5k bonus and other perks.  Boeing says the package would bring the average IAM union machinist pay to more than $102k – up from $75k.  But the contract was voted down by the mostly-St. Louis area-based members of International Association of Machinists and Aerospace workers local 837. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/04/boeing-defense-workers-go-on-strike-after-rejecting-contract.html

Today’s quarterly earnings report from Yum Brands missed analysts’ expectations.  Its Taco Bell division reported same-store sales growth of 4%.  But Pizza Hut and KFC both declined.  Yum had acted to turn around KFC back in March and April, replacing the CEO and KFC US president.  https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/05/yum-brands-yum-q2-2025-earnings.html

Retail gasoline prices are up a couple of cents over the past week after falling about five cents the previous month.  Today’s average price for a gallon of regular in San Diego County is $4.56.  In Riverside County, it’s $4.31.  Nationwide, today’s average price is $3.16.   Today’s lowest local price is $3.79 at Horizon Fuel in Valley Center and Son’s on 5th at Centre City Parkway in Escondido.  In southwest Riverside County, it’s $3.99 at the ARCO on Kalmia in Murrieta.  https://www.gasbuddy.com/gaspricemap?lat=33.5358606990507&lng=-117.169808470566&z=13

Sales of electric vehicles in California sputtered again in the second quarter – down about 15% from one year ago.  The market share of zero-emissions vehicles dropped to 21.6% from more than 25% six months ago.  All this in spite of an expected rush to lock in EV tax credits before they expire next month. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/08/02/electric-vehicle-sales-in-california-sputter/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Fox One, a new direct-to-consumer streaming service will launch on August 21.  It will include all the Fox sports and news programming currently appearing on its broadcast and cable networks.  A subscription is $19.99 a month.  The launch comes just in time for NFL season with the first weekly Sunday game coming up September 4.  Fox sports also carries baseball postseason games and college football.  Unlike competing streaming services, the new Fox One won’t offer any exclusive or original content.  It’s just a way to get programming on platforms other than TVs.  That’s why pay TV subscribers will get free access.    https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/05/fox-one-streaming-service-launch-date-cost.html

Roku today launched a commercial-free streaming service called Howdy.  It costs $2.99 a month and is a new direction for the company known for free, ad-supported viewing.  Content will include 10k hours of movie and TV content from Lionsgate, Warner Bros. Discovery and Filmrise plus some original Roku content.  Roku made its name by selling streaming hardware and devices.  It debuted the free Roku Channel in 2017.  That service will continue, unchanged alongside Howdy.  Roku platform revenue is up 18% over the past 12 months.  https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/05/roku-ad-free-streaming-service-howdy.html
