LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

The 17-year old girl who’d been staying with family in Pala and became the subject of a Feather Alert was confirmed found safe nearby late yesterday. Sunnie Eagleton had been missing since August 2.  On August 6, her mother reported her as a first-time runaway juvenile, prompting the issuance of a statewide Feather Alert.  San Diego Sheriff’s notified CHP to deactivate the alert at 5:45p yesterday.  According to the story in the Fallbrook Village News, Sunnie ran away because she didn’t want to return to Texas with her family, apparently preferring to stay in Pala.  Well, who wouldn’t? https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/08/07/news/span-classbrnwsbreaking-news-spanupdate-at-risk-missing-person-found/79485.html

A traffic collision involving three vehicles happened early this morning on westbound Highway 76 just west of Olive Hill Road. The incident was reported to CHP at 4:46a and involved a blue Tesla Model 3, a maroon Ford SUV, and a third vehicle that ended up in the bushes. All vehicles were disabled and ended up on the right-hand side of the road.  The extent of injuries was not immediately known. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/08/07/news/span-classbrnwsbreaking-news-spanthree-vehicles-involved-in-collision-on-sr-76/79488.html

Highway 74 is still closed from Highway 371 to Palm Desert because of the Rosa Fire, burning on both sides of the road for a fourth day.  The nearly 1,700-acre fire is now 40% contained.  Evacuation orders and warnings remain in place in the Ribbonwood and Pinyon Pines area. https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2025/8/4/rosa-fire

A major makeover proposed for Oceanside’s downtown centerpiece hit a roadblock Wednesday when the Oceanside City Council postponed a decision for eight weeks to avoid what apparently would have been a rejection of the project.  The seven-story, 332-apartment development with two restaurants, retail shops and an outdoor public plaza would replace the aging 16-screen Regal Cinema and a lineup of small shops in a complex at the corner of Mission Avenue and North Coast Highway.  Three of the five council members sided with residents who said the proposed mixed-use building is not right for the 2.72-acre site. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/08/07/mixed-use-makeover-hits-roadblock-at-downtown-oceanside-centerpiece/

Some record high temperatures for the date were recorded locally yesterday.  It was 102 in Escondido.  116 in Borrego Springs and 122 in Ocotillo Wells.  Yesterday’s high temperature in Pala was 98, which did not set a record for August 7.  https://kogo.iheart.com/featured/kogo-local-news/content/2025-08-08-high-temperature-records-set-in-san-diego-county/#:~:text=Ramona%20hit%20104%2C%20breaking%20the,Ocotillo%20Wells%20reached%20122%20degrees.

Several county parks and nature preserves have been temporarily closed due to current high temperatures and forecasts of extreme weather for the region in the coming weeks.  Hellhole Canyon east of Valley Center, El Capitan and Mt. Gower county preserves will be closed to the public the entire month of August.  County Parks Department had already closed Agua Caliente and Vallecito County Parks the day after Memorial Day, saying those campgrounds and recreational areas would reopen the day before Labor Day. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/08/08/county-temporarily-closes-several-nature-preserves-parks-due-to-extreme-heat-forecast/

This is the last day for the National Weather Service Heat Advisory in Pala.  It’s been extended another day for areas just north and east of Pala.  High temperatures in Pala will gradually fall to the upper 80s by Wednesday.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

New this weekend at the movies, two new wide releases … the horror-thriller “Weapons”, and the sequel “Freakier Friday” which once again starrs Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan – 22 years after the first reboot of the Disney original from 1976.  This sequel has unintentionally become something of a documentary because many of the exterior scenes were shot in Pacific Palisades just before January’s devastating fires.  Most of the locations in Freakier Friday burned and now only exist in photos and movies. https://www.movieinsider.com/movies/august/2025?view=list
