An unidentified 19-year old Mexican national was charged yesterday in federal court for ramming a federal agent’s vehicle during an immigration arrest in Escondido Monday. The unidentified man attempted to flee from a Homeland Security Task Force who were there to arrest someone else. In doing so, he allegedly struck the doors of several federal vehicles as well at striking the hip of a Homeland Security agent. The white pickup truck eventually crashed head-on into another government vehicle. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/08/12/man-arrested-after-allegedly-ramming-agents-vehicle-in-escondido-during-immigration-enforcement/

If you’re headed to the beach to beat the heat, note that dangerous rip currents are slamming San Diego County beaches due to sizable swells out of the west and southwest. They’re likely to last well into tomorrow afternoon. In many areas, the surf is breaking 3 to 5 feet high, with individual sets reaching 6 to 7 feet. The swells also are producing fast-moving currents beneath the county’s public piers. Public safety officials are urging swimmers and surfers to enter the ocean only in front of staffed lifeguard stands. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/08/12/treacherous-rip-currents-hit-san-diego-county-beaches-as-summer-reaches-its-peak/
Weather in Pala will continue hot for at least one more day – good reason to head for the beach. We’ll get a break this weekend. But it’ll back in the upper 80s by Tuesday. The full forecast is coming up. (below)
Mass at Pala Mission Church is broadcast live on Rez Radio 91.3 and streamed live on the Rez Radio App every Sunday at 8a. There will be no broadcast this Sunday, 8/17.

The Treasury Department reports that the US national debt has reached a record $37 trillion. A little over five years ago, the Congressional Budget Office projected the national debt would hit that level after 2030. But it ballooned during the first Trump administration and subsequent Biden administration as the federal government borrowed heavily to stabilize the economy and support recovery from the pandemic. This year’s Republican tax cut and spending legislation is now set to add another $4.1 trillion to the debt – one trillion of it in the next 173 days, according to the Joint Economic Committee. The Government Accounting Office says the result will be higher borrowing costs for cars, mortgages and revolving credit, lower wages from businesses having less money to invest, and more expensive goods and services for consumers. https://apnews.com/article/treasury-debt-spending-trump-obbb-6f807c4aae78dcc96f29ff07a3c926f4
At 4%, San Diego County now has the highest annual inflation rate of all major metropolitan areas in the U.S., according to yesterday’s numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The rate had been 3.8% in March and May. The May figure tied San Diego with New York City. Traditionally, high inflation in San Diego has been due to fuel and housing prices. But this time, although housing prices continue to surge another 5%, fuel prices were down. It was most other sectors that were higher. Tuition, school fees and child care up 9.4%. Transportation costs up 5.1%. Used vehicle prices up 5.3%. Most food categories were up a little over 3%. But meats, poultry, fish and eggs were up 7.3%. Medical care costs up 6.8%. Economists say California’s $20 an hour minimum wage for fast food workers is tempting workers at lower-paid jobs, causing outsized increases for lower paid jobs. The crackdown on undocumented workers is another factor affecting labor numbers in San Diego. But that’s hard to track because most are paid under the table. The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario metro was second, behind San Diego in the July inflation report at 3 ½%. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/08/12/san-diegos-inflation-rate-remains-highest-in-nation-at-4/
Retail gasoline prices are falling throughout most of California, while nationwide prices are increasing. It’s not a strong trend in either direction. But it is unusual. Today’s average price for a gallon of regular in San Diego County is $4.55. That’s down a penny from yesterday but actually two cents more than a week ago. In Riverside County, it’s $4.29 – down two cents from yesterday and three less than last week. Nationwide, the average price is $3.15. Earlier this week it had fallen to $3.09. In parts of Texas, regular is now as low as $2.35. Today’s lowest local price is $3.79 at Horizon Fuel in Valley Center. In southwest Riverside County, it’s $3.99 at Temecula Costco and Murrieta Sam’s Club. https://www.gasbuddy.com/gaspricemap?lat=33.48473696404127&lng=-117.0783191530568&z=17

A controversial overhaul of state regulation of rooftop solar two years ago by the California Public Utilities Commission will get another examination after the California Supreme Court sided with three environmental organizations and sent the state’s net energy metering tariff program, known as NEM 3.0 back to the state appeals court. The unanimous decision the state’s high court said the appeals court was too deferential to the commission in its decision against the environmental groups. It said nothing about whether the new rules were “correct or incorrect.” So, NEM 3.0 remains in effect at least until the lower court case is resolved. That’s expected to take another three or four months. The main sticking point is that under NEM 3.0, new rooftop solar customers are no longer credited at the retail rate of electricity for excess power generated and sent into the grid. Instead they get the “actual avoided cost”, which is lower and therefore undercuts one incentive to go solar. Power companies argue that the growing number of rooftop systems leads to a “cost shift” with customers who don’t have solar paying an unfair share of the fixed costs for maintaining the public power grid. Environmentalists say that argument doesn’t consider the decreased need for building more infrastructure created by additional private rooftop solar installations. They also say state regulators are breaking the law regarding a statute in the Public Utilities Code requiring the PUC to “ensure that customer-sited renewable distributed generation continues to grow sustainably.” https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/08/07/californias-rooftop-solar-rules-in-limbo-after-state-supreme-court-ruling/
