LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Oceanside Police Department announced yesterday it has begun its promised Drone as First Responder program.  The 13-month pilot program dispatches a drone to reported incidents to provide video and other information to officers before they arrive on-scene.  It’s intended to improve response time and increase officer safety.  The city’s new Real Time Crime Center will receive the video from drones, which will operate mainly in the downtown area.  The program is funded by a state grant and is staffed by fully trained and certified drone pilots.  There’s a transparency portal where the public can view flight activity and other details at this linkhttps://www.10news.com/news/local-news/oceanside-police-department-begins-drone-response-pilot-program

One person was badly injured in a solo vehicle crash in San Marcos yesterday morning.  The driver was trapped inside a vehicle that veered off the 78 freeway near Twin Oaks Valley Road around 2:20a.  It crashed through a guardrail and landed on E. Riverside Sheriff’s investigators say a Menifee police officer accused of eight felony counts “abused his position” in sexually assaulting several women.  32-year old Juan Jose Pesina Jr. was arrested one week ago and charged with the crimes last Thursday.  It’s alleged he attempted to cover up his actions by failing to turn on his body-cam and possibly disengaging his patrol car’s GPS tracker.  The statements by investigators were part of an affidavit asking a judge to hold Pesina without bail.  He’s due to enter pleas on charges of sodomy, rape, forced oral copulation, sexual assault and battery on September 2.  Pesina is currently on administrative leave and being held in Banning jail. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/08/18/menifee-police-officer-abused-his-position-sexually-assaulted-women-investigator-says/

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average was just slightly positive.  The S&P 500 was down a half percent.  And the Nasdaq was off by 1.3%.  Gold fell $16.70 on the Comex to $3,361.30 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down $1.10 to $62.30 a barrel.

Air Canada has reached a tentative deal to end its flight attendants’ strike.  Union workers walked out in spite of orders from the Canadian government to stay on the job.  Thousands of flights have been cancelled affecting up to a half million passengers and it’s estimated it’ll take ten days or more to untangle the mess. www.NYTimes.com

Home Depot today became the latest U.S. company to warn of upcoming price increases due to tariffs.  The word came along with today’s quarterly report.  Just under half of Home Depot’s stock is acquired from companies outside the U.S. and tariffs on those goods are increasing beyond where Home Depot can absorb them.  The company had previously said it would seek to diversify so that no one foreign country is responsible for more than 10% of its goods.  Today’s report said price increases will be targeted on those items most affected by tariffs and will not be broad-based across the home improvement chain’s offerings. https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/americas/home-depot-price-rise-trump-tariffs-b2810438.html

The MSNBC network is getting new name.  It’ll also drop the iconic NBC peacock logo.  The new name is MS NOW, an acronym for “My Source for News, Opinion, and the World”.  The rebrand is an attempt to create distance between the liberal news network and NBC Universal, which owns the NBC television network.  MS NOW is part of the package including the Golf Channel, E!, and CNBC that began being spun off into a new company called Versant last November.  The original MSNBC name came from a long-gone partnership between NBC and Microsoft.  The changes also make MS NOW self-sufficient with no connections to corporate cousin, NBC.  MSNBC’s evening news ratings place it between first-place Fox News and third-place CNN, according to Nielsen.  www.morningbrew.com

Earlier this month, Six Flags reported a third straight quarterly loss, and that park attendance for the chain in the second quarter was down 9% from last year.  Part of the problem is competition.  Disney park revenue is up 10% year over year.  United Parks, which owns Sea World and Busch Gardens saw attendance increase 1% last quarter.  And Universal just debuted its $7b Epic Universe.  Meanwhile, Six Flags has announced plans to close its park in Maryland and sell off the land, and recently laid off hundreds of full-time staff following its acquisition last year of Cedar Fair which includes Knotts Berry Farm.  So far this year, shares in Six Flags Entertainment Corporation are down 47%. https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20250804828767/en/Six-Flags-Entertainment-Corporation-Reports-2025-Second-Quarter-Results-Provides-July-Performance-Update-and-Updates-Full-Year-Guidance

Beginning today, Best Buy is adding a third-party marketplace to its website and app to increase the variety of merchandise it sells and try to reverse a trend of declining sales.  The move mimics the success of others including Amazon and Walmart, who rely on third-party sellers to stock, sell and ship inventory and then take a cut of the sales in the form of a commission.  It also gives small and start-up vendors with innovative products a chance to sell under the Best Buy name when they’re not yet big enough to make or distribute the volume needed for Best Buy stores.  Annual sales at Best Buy have been declining for the past three years. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/19/best-buy-launches-third-party-marketplace.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

For the first time in four years, debit card spending has grown more quickly than credit card spending.  Citing data from Visa and Mastercard, it’s been happening since late last year.  There are several factors.  Among them, people are not as inclined to spend as they were during the pandemic, and credit cards are becoming harder to get as issuing banks become more selective with their offerings.  www.morningbrew.com

Lightspeed Commerce, a company that provides payment systems to the hospitality industry says 44% of U.S. diners have ordered children’s meals for themselves.  Market research firm, Circana reports the trend has increased 30% over the past five years, even as overall restaurant traffic declined.  Diners surveyed say the reasons for adults ordering kids meals are smaller portions, followed by more budget-friendly prices, and simpler choices.  Experts say that with many people on GLP-1 medications, it’s natural to want to order less food.  For the industry, although they’ll need to sell more of them to equal the same bottom line, kids’ meals are profitable.  McDonald’s sells 3.2m Happy Meals every day and they are a money-maker.  The fast food giant is addressing the trend of adults ordering kids meals with what might be considered an adult version of the Happy Meal capitalizing on its nostalgia, called the McDonaldland Meal – a Quarter Pounder with Cheese or 10-pieces of Chicken McNuggets with fries and a Mt. McDonaldland shake.  Like a Happy Meal, it comes with a toy, which McDonald’s refers to as a “first-of-its-kind collectable souvenir.”  https://www.morningstar.com/news/marketwatch/2025081964/nearly-50-of-adults-are-now-ordering-kids-meals-its-economical-and-its-filling
