LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

There’s been a third stabbing in the past five days in Fallbrook.  The incident was reported at 3a in the 400 block of Ammunition Road.  Sheriff’s deputies from multiple cities responded to the assault with a deadly weapon call.  The victim, a Hispanic man whose name has not been released, was found on the sidewalk at the rear of an apartment complex struggling to breathe.  He was taken to a hospital with his condition unknown. The motive and number of assailants and whether this was gang-related is unclear.  Other stabbings have happened in Fallbrook last Friday on West Clemmens Lane and Saturday on South Vine during a group fight. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/08/14/news/span-classbrnwsbreaking-news-spanthird-stabbing-victim-transported-to-hospital/79615.html

More than 1k acres of land in the San Felipe valley is being returned to the Santa Ysabel tribe thanks to funding from the California Natural Resources Agency.  Santa Ysabel Chairman Kevin Osuna said it is “more than a restoration of territory, it is a restoration of identity, responsibility, and healing.”  The tribe plans to create a conservation management plan to protect the area, and to create the “Ewiinally Traditional Ecological Knowledge Center” as an educational public resource. https://fox5sandiego.com/news/local-news/more-than-1000-acres-of-ancestral-land-being-returned-to-indigenous-tribe/

State and federal health officials say Covid -19 activity is steadily increasing throughout California, but ER visits and hospital admissions among those infected remain low.  The latest variant, XFG, better known as the razor blade, or sore-throat variant is increasingly common all across the country with the CDC reporting case numbers increasing or likely to increase in 34 states.  The World Health Organization says the XFG variant is only slightly better at evading people’s immune systems and vaccines working against it.  Covid-19 vaccines are recommended for anyone older than 6 months.  For those over age 65, the CDPH recommends asking your health care provider about a second dose of the 2024-25 vaccine. https://patch.com/california/temecula/razor-blade-throat-covid-19-variant-drives-cases-california

President Trump’s efforts to remake the nation’s central bank stepped up a notch today with his demand that Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook resign.  Head of the U.S. Federal Housing Finance Agency, Bill Pulte, whom Trump appointed to the position in March, claimed on social media that Cook committed mortgage fraud by claiming two different homes as her primary residence.  Interest rates on a primary residence mortgage are typically lower than those for additional properties.  Pulte’s post prompted the response comment from Trump demanding Cook’s resignation and that he believes the Justice Department will open a criminal investigation into the alleged fraud.  Cook is on the 12-person Federal Open Market Committee – the group at the Fed that makes decisions on cutting, holding, or raising interest rates through a majority vote.  Since taking office, Trump has been criticizing the Fed for not lowering interest rates and has recently been pushing Congress to confirm his nomination of Presidential staff economic advisor Stephen Miran to the Fed’s Board of Governors to temporarily replace Adriana Kugler following her resignation. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-lisa-cook-federal-reserve-governor-bill-pulte/

Lowe’s beat quarterly earnings expectations with today’s Q2 report.  The home improvement retailer also announced the $8.8b acquisition of Foundation Building Materials – its second major acquisition of a home professional-focused company in recent months. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/20/lowes-low-q2-2025-earnings.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Walmart today recalled frozen, raw shrimp from stores in 13 states at the request of he Food and Drug Administration, who discovered the presence of a radioactive isotope in shipping containers and a sample of breaded shrimp imported from Indonesia.  The recall affects three lots of Great Value brand frozen shrimp that may have traces of Cesium-137 – a byproduct of nuclear reactions, testing, and accidents.  All of the affected Walmart products have a best-by date of March 15, 2027.  All went to Southern and Midwestern states. None have been reported sold in California. https://www.npr.org/2025/08/20/nx-s1-5507971/walmart-recall-frozen-shrimp-radioactive

McDonald’s says it will cut the prices on its combo meals to convince customers that it is still an affordable place to eat.  McDonald’s and its franchisees agreed to keep the cost of eight popular combo meals 15% lower than if the items were purchased separately with the company promising financial support if the franchisees agreed. There will also be a $5 breakfast and $8 Big Mac and McNugget combo special later this year.  They’ll be advertised as Extra Value Meals.   Independent studies show the price of a Big Mac at McDonald’s increased an average of 21% from 2019 to 2024. https://www.foxbusiness.com/lifestyle/mcdonalds-slash-combo-meal-prices-win-back-budget-conscious-shoppers

The new owners of Fat Ivor’s Rib Rack on Valley Center Road held a grand reopening last Saturday hoping to bring the long-time VC restaurant back to its glory days as the go-to place for food, drink, watching sports and hanging out with friends.  As of June, Fat Ivor’s is now co-owned by cousins Matt and Tony Guiliano and their friend Andy Bilodeau, all from Valley Center.  Together the three also own a restaurant in Murrieta.  Tony has been the food and beverage manager at Harrah’s Rincon for the past six years.  The three plan to revive some Fat Ivor’s traditions like honoring the local high school “Player of the Week” with a free meal and bringing the Blooming Onion back to the menu of barbecue favorites. Current hours are 11a to 10p daily, plus staying open until midnight Fridays and Saturdays.  They’re developing a breakfast menu and will soon begin opening at 9a on Saturdays and Sundays.  https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/new-owners-want-to-restore-the-best-of-vcs-iconic-fat-ivors/
