BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down on all three major U.S. indexes.  The Dow was down more than a half percent.  The S&P 500 fell 6 tenths.  And the Nasdaq was off by ¾ of a percent.  Gold fell $4.30 on the Comex to $3,384.20 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 16 cents to $63.37 a barrel.

The U.S. and European Union today revealed new details of their trade agreement.  Before last month’s agreement, the EU faced a possible 30% tariff on goods coming into the U.S.  Instead, the rate will be 15%.  In exchange, the EU will remove tariffs on U.S. goods and EU companies will aim to buy hundreds of billions of dollars in U.S. products.  Last year, the EU bought about $370b in U.S. products, while the U.S. bought about $605b worth of European goods.  Under the new agreement, generic pharmaceuticals will be exempt from the new tariffs and will be at the previous 2.5% tax rate.  President Trump had at one point threatened a 250% tariff on pharmaceuticals.  Semiconductors will be taxed at the new 15% rate – far below Trump’s threat of 300%.  Tariffs on imported European vehicles and auto parts will be reduced from 27.5% to 15% as long as the EU slashes its industrial tariffs on U.S. goods. https://abcnews.go.com/Business/us-eu-release-details-tariffs-cars-pharmaceuticals/story?id=124843094

The price of a Sony Playstation 5 is going up due to tariffs.  As of today, one will cost you $50 more with retail prices now ranging from $500 to $750.  https://www.axios.com/2025/08/20/sony-ps5-price-increase-trump-tariffs

The largest owner of local US TV stations, Nexstar intends to get bigger.  It has agreed to purchase rival, Tegna for $6.2b.  If approved by federal regulators, Nexstar would control 265 stations in 44 states plus the District of Columbia.  CEO Perry Sook says it’s necessary in order for broadcast television to compete with tech giants.  Critics say such consolidation would stifle competition. The deal has to be approved by the FCC, whose chairman, Brendan Carr has signaled an openness to relaxing existing limits on now much of the market a broadcaster can control.  Southern California stations currently owned by Nexstar include Channel 5 KTLA in Los Angeles, and Channels 51 and 69, KUSI and KSWB in San Diego.  The merger would give Nexstar three stations in San Diego by adding Tegna’s Channel 8 KFMB.  www.morningbrew.com https://www.vcstar.com/story/news/local/california/2025/08/19/nexstar-tegna-merger-could-see-company-add-more-stations-to-its-roster-ktla-kxtv-kron-kfmb-ktxl/85729595007/

You’re playing with fire whenever you try to make more than the slightest change at any nostalgia-based business.  At Cracker Barrel, it’s always been about comfort food classics and the old country store vibe with antique knick-knacks for sale.  Beginning last year, the restaurant chain began remodeling stores with a new design, new color palette, and some new menu items including pot roast and a unique shepherd’s pie with a hashbrown crust.  Today, Cracker Barrel is launching its new ad campaign called “All the More” and unveiling a new modernized logo at an event in the most un-Cracker Barrel-like of places – New York City.  For its logo, gone is the old man leaning on a barrel, which has been the symbol of the chain since 1977.  He’s being replaced by a simple brand name in a new typeface on the familiar gold background.  Critics are skeptical of the change.  Only time will tell.  https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/articles/cracker-barrels-logo-just-underwent-171409799.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Have you already cut back on caffeine and now need to address that other addiction in your life … your smart phone?  There’s an app for that, and it just surpassed ChatGPT as the most-downloaded free app on Apple’s App Store.  No, it’s not the Rez Radio App.  It’s called Focus Friend and it’s from influencer, Hank Green whose YouTube channel has almost 2 ½ million subscribers.  It adds to your phone a little animated bean who is trying to finish knitting projects.  The bean gets sad and distracted if you use your other phone apps.  The only way to keep “beanie” happy is to stay off your phone until the timer, which is set by you ends.  It’s about letting people be in control of their attention and catching brief mental breaks using the Pomodoro Technique of focused work time with short breaks.  In other words, it improves the health and mood of your bean.  Get it?   Focus Friend has available in-app purchases.  But there are no ads and it doesn’t collect or share data.   www.morningbrew.com
