LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

California Assemblyman James Ramos lashed out at his colleagues yesterday over the use of the term “California’s First People” during floor discussion of AB 604, the state voter redistricting bill.  He described remarks made by a San Diego-area Assembly member as “odious and cynical” coming just days after Assembly acknowledgement of the long history of atrocities committed against Native Americans including the systematic war of extermination called for by California’s first governor and accompanying mass public hysteria that led to the execution of tribal leader Antonio Garra in 1852.  Ramos noted that redistricting does not erase tribal sovereignty, reservations, citizens’ rights or power and said it was hypocritical and offensive to bring tribes into the highly contentious redistricting battle without first seeking their input, instead assuming that one assembly member paternalistically knew what was best for them.  AB 604 seeks to redraw voting district lines in California to win five more U.S. House seats next year to counter those being lost to Texas Republicans through redistricting in that state on President Trump’s request.  The tit-for-tat gerrymandering measure has now been signed by Gov. Newsom and will appear on a statewide ballot this November.  If approved by voters, the new district boundaries will be in effect for the 2026 mid-term election, with the intent by California Democrats to neutralize the effects of Texas redistricting.  (Asm. No further details have been released. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/electric-motorcycle-rider-crashes-dies-in-police-pursuit-in-escondido

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks are surging to record highs today.  The Dow gained 2%.  The S&P 500 was up 1.6%.  And the Nasdaq gained 1.9%.  Gold shot up more than 1% on the Comex, gaining $35.40 to $3,417 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil price was up 17 cents to $63.69 a barrel.

Speaking of barrel, remember yesterday when we said, “We’ll see” regarding Cracker Barrel’s makeover including yesterday’s unveiling of its new modernized logo without the nearly 50-year-tradition picture of an old man and a barrel?  Well, the stock market hated it.  Shares of Cracker Barrel Old Country Store Inc. plunged more than 11% by early afternoon yesterday before recovering about half of the losses for the day and finishing just under $55.  It had started the day at nearly $59.  As of midday today, it was still around $55.  Investors have spoken.  Don’t mess with success. www.marketwatch.com

Another stock that’s fallen on news of change is Target.  Although in this case, it’s because the change wasn’t enough.  At its Q2 report this week, the retailer posted better-than-expected earnings and revenue, but maintained that the year overall will show a 1% decline.  It also announced the appointment of Michael Fiddelke as its new CEO, effective in February.  Fidelke came up through the ranks at Target, beginning as a financial intern.  But with Walmart eating Target’s lunch the last several years – especially when it comes to online sales, investors wanted fresh blood from outside to turn things around.  Company stock plunged 10% with Tuesday’s announcement and has yet to recover more than half the loss.  https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/20/target-tgt-q2-2025-earnings.html

Today’s overall stock market rally seems to be thanks to a speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell this morning, further opening the door for the first interest rate cut of President Trump’s second term.  At the Fed’s annual symposium at Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Powell said the labor market is now in a “curious kind of balance”, but that downside risks to employment are rising, which could justify countering unemployment through boosting overall economic activity by lowering the cost of borrowing.  Translation: It’s now even more likely there will be an interest rate cut at the Fed’s September meeting.  Powell also addressed President Trump’s claims that tariffs have not sparked significant inflation, saying that indeed, the impact of tariffs on consumer prices “are now clearly visible”, and that the trend is expected to continue over the coming months.  In fact, it’s the main thing that’s keeping the Fed from lowering rates to counteract unemployment.  That’s the “curious balance” Powell referred to.  Trump has hammered Powell over not lowering interest rates to boost the economy – especially home sales.  But experts say that since the prime lending rate does not directly affect mortgages that the home market will continue to drift sideways no matter what the Fed does and that it would take a significant economic downturn for there to be lower 30-year mortgage rates. https://www.nbcnews.com/business/economy/powell-opens-door-potential-rate-cut-speech-jackson-hole-rcna226613

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The California State Fire Marshal has revoked the pyrotechnic licenses of the companies and individuals involved in the fireworks facility explosion on July 1 in the small town of Esparto, west of Sacramento.  The facility itself was destroyed along with several residential buildings.  Seven people died and two more were injured.  The Fire Marshal determined that there was evidence that Kenneth Chee, his company Devastating Pyrotechnics Inc., and Craig Cutright, and his company Blackstar Fireworks violated state laws and regulations, leading to the deadly incident.  A further criminal investigation is underway.  As a result of Esparto, a task force appointed by the Fire Marshal is reviewing existing state regulations and enforcement and will come up with proposed amendments to enhance compliance and public safety.  (Cal Fire media release)

He was one half of the songwriting and recording team Ashford & Simpson with his wife, Valerie Simpson.  The pair wrote “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, “You’re All I Need to Get By”, and “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing” for the Supremes as well as their own mid-1980s #3 hit, “Solid”.
  • In 2016 it was reported that pills seized from the home of Prince contained the dangerous synthetic opioid Fentanyl but were mislabeled as hydrocodone, a weaker type of opioid.  Autopsy results released two months earlier said Prince had died of an accidental fentanyl overdose.
