LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

It was a bad weekend for serious accidents on local roads.  Four people were killed and two others injured in a fiery collision on the 15 freeway in Temecula Saturday evening.  It happened about 9:30p when a northbound BMW, driving recklessly just past Winchester Road veered left and crossed the center median onto southbound lanes, then continued across all lanes, where it was broadsided by a Nissan Sentra.  Good Samaritans pulled the 25-year old driver of the burning BMW to safety.  His three passengers, a 23-year old woman and a boy and girl, ages 14 and 15, all from Moreno Valley, all died at the scene, as did the 35-year old Wildomar man driving the Nissan.  His passenger, a 22-year old man was transported to Inland Valley Hospital in critical condition.  Alcohol was not a factor.  Charges against the BMW driver are pending as the investigation continues. https://patch.com/california/temecula/4-killed-2-injured-temecula-crash-police

Alcohol apparently was involved in a fatal rollover crash in Vista earlier Saturday.  The single vehicle left the roadway and struck a light pole, rolling over several times around 4:25a on South Melrose at Shadowridge.  The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. https://www.newsbreak.com/times-of-san-diego-555715/4193087758916-driver-killed-in-crash-after-sedan-strikes-light-pole-in-vista

A solo vehicle accident on Highway 76 near Pankey Ranch Road just after midnight yesterday morning ignited a small vegetation fire.  The driver was able to exit the car, but was frantic, saying his girlfriend was still in the car.  First responders were unable to find anyone else in the car, or anywhere else in the area using searchlights and thermal imaging.  It’s unclear whether DUI was involved.  The driver was taken to a hospital. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/08/21/news/span-classbrnwsbreaking-news-spanone-person-transported-after-vehicle-crash-authorities-search-for-second-victim/79676.html

A collision between a vehicle and a Sprinter train yesterday afternoon in Vista snarled traffic on South Santa Fe near Woodland Drive for more than an hour.  No one was injured and damage to both the train and vehicle was minor. https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/4194610215289-vehicle-and-train-collide-in-vista-causing-traffic-backup

Around the same time yesterday afternoon, there was a minor accident on Sleeping Indian Road in Fallbrook where a vehicle struck a concrete mailbox, setting the vehicle on fire.  First responders arrived within minutes.  No further details available. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/08/21/news/traffic-collision-sparks-small-fire-in-fallbrook/79680.html

It’s likely that lightning sparked a fire that broke out east of Temecula Saturday morning.  It was 90% contained as of 7p that evening.  The Vail Fire was first reported at 8:30a near Vail Lake Dam, north of Highway 79.  It burned about 55 acres in difficult terrain with temperatures around 100 by midday.  There were no structures threatened and no evacuations ordered. https://patch.com/california/temecula/vegetation-fire-burning-east-temecula-officials-say

North County Fire performed a pair of helicopter rescues Saturday.  Just before 11:30a, two horseback riders were thrown and trampled about two miles from the trail head of Santa Margarita Trail.  Both were flown to Palomar Medical Center with moderate to acute injuries.  Later in the day, a hiker was helicoptered off Monserate Mountain Trail suffering from possible heat exhaustion.  The call was received by North County Fire about ten minutes before 3p, at the peak heat of the day.  The man was taken to a nearby sports field, treated by paramedics and released. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/08/21/news/span-classbrnwsbreaking-news-spanhiker-rescued-from-monserate-mountain-trail/79675.html https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/08/21/news/trampled-horseback-riders-rescued-by-ncfpd-san-diego-city-fire-rescue-helicopter/79671.html

After serving a warrant on property in Valley Center in July, San Diego Sheriffs’ investigators last Thursday announced the discovery on that property of the remains of a woman missing for more than 18 months.  The Coroner has now confirmed that it was the owner, 65-year old Natalie Jett, who’d last been seen by family in late 2023, shortly after she’d been diagnosed with cancer.  Jett was a divorce and family law attorney for 30 years, as well as foster mother to several devoted children over the years.  One of those children had become caretaker of the property and had told the others Jett was too sick to see or to speak with them.  By Easter of the following year, he’d told them that Jett had died and was cremated in Mexico.  A realtor who’d been working with the caretaker to sell the property tipped off authorities when the caretaker began acting suspiciously and things went sideways during escrow.  By the time deputies investigated, the caretaker had cleared out and squatters had taken over the property.  No charges have been filed, but the investigation into the manner of Natalie Jett’s death is ongoing. https://people.com/remains-of-missing-california-woman-found-one-year-after-her-disappearance-11796468

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres failed to capitalize on their big chance to get ahead of the Dodgers.  They lost two out of three to LA at Petco Park, only winning once in six games this month against their NL West nemesis.  Yesterday’s 8-2 loss included Shohei Ohtani’s 45th home run of the season in the top of the 9th inning.  He’d been 0 for his previous ten at-bats.  The Padres and Dodgers are currently tied for first in the division with identical records of 74 and 57.  The Giants took two out of three in Milwaukee and the Diamondbacks took two out of three from the visiting Reds.  That leaves Arizona in 3rd place, 10 games behinds the Padres and Dodgers, and San Francisco in 4th, one game behind Arizona.  The Angels got swept by the visiting Cubs.  Tonight, San Diego is at Seattle, the Dodgers host Cincinnati, Arizona is at Milwaukee, and the Angels are at Texas.  San Francisco has the day off.

Seattle’s Cal Raleigh hit his 48th and 49th home runs of the season in yesterday’s 11-4 win against the A’s.  That sets a single season record for catchers, breaking Salvador Perez’s total with the Royals in 2021.  Yesterday was also Raleigh’s ninth multi-home run game this year, surpassing Mickey Mantle’s record for a switch hitter set in 1961 with the Yankees.  The overall record for multi-home run games is 11.  Raleigh has plenty of time get there. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46065669/mariners-cal-raleigh-hits-48th-hr-tie-mlb-record-catchers

At the Little League World Series in Williamsport – After bouncing back from the elimination bracket to win the U.S. championship 8-2 Saturday, the team from Nevada lost in the World Series title game to Taipei 7-0.  In the consolation game of the double elimination tournament, Nevada’s opponent from Saturday beat the Caribbean team 4-2. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/45894825/2025-little-league-world-series-baseball-softball-schedule-results-channels-highlights

In the NFL – The preseason is over.  In the final set of games Saturday, the 49ers beat the Chargers 30-23.  Cleveland edged the Rams 19-17.  Other winners were Baltimore, Indiana, Houston, Denver, Green Bay, Miami, Buffalo, and Arizona.  The regular season begins Thursday with Dallas at Philadelphia on NBC Peacock streaming.

In college football – Week 1 began Saturday with five games.  #22 Iowa State upset #17 Kansas State 24-21.  First week action continues beginning Thursday.

In the WNBA – Yesterday’s winners were Seattle, Golden State and Minnesota, who clinched a playoff berth with their 94-87 win over Indiana.  Tonight, it’s Connecticut at New York and Las Vegas at Chicago.

In Major League Soccer – On Saturday, San Diego FC and Portland played to a scoreless tie.  But that was enough to ensure San Diego will be in the playoffs in its debut season.  LAFC and FC Dallas tied at 1 and the Galaxy shut out Colorado 3-0.

In golf – At the TOUR Championship in Atlanta, Tommy Fleetwood achieved his first PGA Tour victory finishing at 18-under par 262 – three strokes ahead of Russell Henley and Patrick Cantlay. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

In racing – Saturday at Daytona, Ryan Blaney won the final NASCAR Cup race of the regular season.  And Christian Rasmussen was the winner yesterday at the Grand Prix of Milwaukee.

In tennis – at the US Open, 38-year old Novak Djokovic had to rally to beat Lerner Tien yesterday in three sets.  It was his first match since losing to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon semifinals.  But yesterday’s headline was the six-minute delay caused by 2021 US Open champion Daniil Medvedev going ballistic after a photographer entered the court on match point resulting in the chair umpire awarding a first serve to his opponent Benjamin Bonzi.  Medvedev rallied to win that and the following set before losing to Bonzi 6-4 in the fifth.  Round 1 continues today. https://www.espn.com/tennis/story/_/id/46068258/bonzi-survives-medvedev-late-surge-chaotic-us-open-match

In local high school sports:

Bonsall – no scheduled games

Great Oak – girls’ golf at Poly Riverside at 8:30a; girls’ volleyball hosting Fallbrook at 4p

Fallbrook – field hockey hosting Valley Center at 4p

Valley Center – Just the field hockey games at Fallbrook

ORDERS

  • Masks are optional for all Pala tribal employees, vendors and other visitors except in designated high-risk departments.  Social distancing of 6 feet, hand sanitizing and other safety measures are still recommended.
  • Californians, are no longer required to wear masks in most indoor public places.  It’s now only a recommendation.  Masks are now optional on public transportation, in airports and in taxis.  They’re still required in most hospitals and doctor’s offices.  Masks and other coverings don’t have to be hospital grade, but N95 is recommended.  Cotton fabric which can easily be washed and reused has proven to be less effective at preventing the spread of coronavirus.
  • County Health advises that anyone who is sick with anything – diagnosed or not, stay home and not return to work until at least 3 days after they are fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medicines and at least 7 days after symptoms began.  They define fever as 100 degrees or more.
  • Pala Administration no longer requires a negative test before returning to work after a Covid quarantine. The rules for Covid are now the same as for colds and flu – no return to work until symptom and fever-free for 48 hours.  But no test is necessary.
