Two people were arrested yesterday in San Diego in connection with a road rage incident in Vista on Sunday that left a pedestrian severely injured and multiple vehicles damaged. 41-year old Lindsey Bigbey and 42-year old Nathan Robson were taken into custody on East Mission Bay Drive for their part in an “aggressive pursuit” by Bigbey of Robson through a residential neighborhood near Calle Jules and Via Felicidad where Bigbey allegedly stuck a pedestrian and several parked cars, then collided head-on with another one, rendering her Toyota Sequoia inoperable. In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost two out of three in Seattle including yesterday afternoon’s 4-3 decision in which their 9th inning rally came up a run short of tying the game. Yu Darvish gave up all four Mariners’ runs in his four innings pitched. The Dodgers beat Cincinnati 5-1. Shohei Ohtani got the win for his five innings pitched. That puts LA two games ahead of the second-place Padres. The Giants won their fourth in a row 12-3 over the Cubs. They remain a half-game ahead of fourth-place Arizona who beat the Brewers in Milwaukee 3-2 yesterday. Texas demolished the visiting Angels 20-3. A light schedule today. Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, as expected filed suit against President Trump for her firing, arguing that it was “unprecedented and illegal.” Meanwhile, yet another federal official supposedly fired by the White House is refusing to step down. The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Susan Monarez, who’d been appointed to the position less than a month ago by Trump, was asked to resign after refusing to go along with Health Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr.’s wishes to approve what she felt were unscientific and reckless directives, and to fire a number of health experts. As part of the shakeup, four other top CDC officials submitted their resignations yesterday. Monarez says she’s remaining in her role because only President Trump, personally can fire her. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/28/cdc-director-susan-monarez-trump-fire.html

Many questions are being raised as the Trump administration aggressively pushes for the U.S. to take a stake in major private companies. The biggest one is should the government be in the business of competitive business when it has regulatory power over business? The White House announced this week that the federal government will take a ten percent stake in the struggling technology giant, Intel. Nationalizing industries is typically part of a socialist government agenda. At the very least, it puts independent companies in that industry at a competitive disadvantage. https://www.npr.org/2025/08/27/nx-s1-5519400/should-the-government-be-in-the-business-of-business

Common Sense Media, a non-profit family advocacy group providing age-based reviews of media and tech tools reports that Meta AI poses unacceptable risks to teen safety and should not be used by anyone under the age of 18. Meta AI is available as a standalone Apple or Android app and is integrated into Meta platforms Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook. There is no way to turn it off and no way to see your child’s conversations with the chatbot. Common Sense found that Meta AI’s safety systems regularly fail when teens are in crisis, missing clear signs of self-harm, suicide risk, and other dangerous situations that require immediate intervention. To the contrary, it actively helps teens plan harmful activities while blocking helpful content. Further, it gains teens’ confidence by pretending to be a real person and reinforcing harmful behavior by remembering and emphasizing the most concerning parts of previous conversations. Common Sense is so concerned about the findings that it has launched a petition urging Meta to prevent kids from engaging with the AI companion platform. Meta AI is currently available to anyone over age 13. That petition can be found at StopMetaAI.org. (Common Sense media release) https://www.commonsense.org
Amtrak debuted its next-generation Acela trains today. The new trains increase the top speed of the current-generation Acelas by ten miles an hour to 160. Calling itself “America’s only high-speed rail service” the new trains will run between Washington DC and Boston, extending Amtrak’s existing Acela line through the busy Northeast Corridor. Amtrak says more than 69m passengers have traveled on Acela since it began operations in 2000. The new trains which were built by French manufacturer Alstom with parts 95% sourced from within the U.S. can accommodate 27% more riders and have advanced features like free, high-speed Wi-Fi, wider seats, a system that tilts the cars for a smoother ride, and more daily departures. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/08/28/amtrak-nextgen-acela-high-speed-rail.html
On this day in music history – August 28,
- 1964, after playing a concert at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in New York, The Beatles met Bob Dylan for the first time at The Delmonico Hotel along with a mutual journalist friend. Dylan is the one who first turned the Beatles on to marijuana.
- In 1965, The Beatles played their one and only concert in San Diego at Balboa Stadium – then the home to the San Diego Chargers. The concert had been hastily set up and due to conflicts over the rights, didn’t get proper promotion and was not even close to a sellout.
- On the same day, the Rolling Stones signed a five-year record deal with the Decca label and announced that Allen Klein was the group’s new co-manager, along with Andrew Loog Oldham.
- And also this day in 1965, Bob Dylan played the first night of a 40-date tour consisting of two sets – the first acoustic, the second backed by a band consisting of Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Harvey Brooks and Al Kooper playing amplified instruments. This was the beginning of Dylan’s electric era and the world’s introduction to the group later known as The Band.
- In 1966, following their show at Dodger Stadium for 45k fans, the Beatles tried to make their exit from the venue in an armored truck. But the main gate was locked and the boys had to spend the next two hours in the truck before they could leave Dodger Stadium. Just one more snafu in a tour which the four had already decided would be their last.
- In 1968, The Beatles continued to record tracks for The White Album without Ringo who had quit the group six days earlier. Today’s recording was “Dear Prudence” with Paul on drums.
- On the same day, Tammy Wynette recorded what would become her signature song, “Stand By Your Man”. The entire session took 15 minutes. The song became the most successful of Wynette’s career and one of the most covered songs in the history of country music.
- Also on this day in 1968, Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bookends” album was in the first of five weeks at #1. That fourth studio album for the duo included the hits “America”, “A Hazy Shade of Winter” and “Mrs. Robinson”. On the singles chart, the Beach Boys were at #1 with “Do It Again”.
- In 1972, Alice Cooper was at #1 with “School’s Out” – the musical answer to a question posed to him asking what’s the three greatest minutes of your life?
- In 1984, The Jacksons’ Victory Tour broke a record for concert sales, surpassing the 1.1m mark in two months.
- In 1993, Billy Joel began the first of three weeks at #1 on the album chart with “River of Dreams”, so named because he claimed most of the music came to him in his sleep.
- In 2005, Rap mogul Marion “Suge” Knight was hospitalized after being shot in the leg at a party hosted by Kanye West.
- On the same day, Green Day cleaned up at that year’s MTV awards in Miami winning seven awards including Video of the Year for “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”.
