The Southern California wildfires have now burned well over 100k acres.  Firefighting resources are stretched thin.  The largest, the Bridge Fire has burned 51k acres with no containment and is moving mostly north into the high desert near Piñon Hills and Phelan.  All or part of Highways 2, 39, and 138 are closed with extensive evacuations.  The fire increased more than 13k acres overnight.  Top priority for firefighters is protection of structures in Wrightwood, Piñon Hills and Mount Baldy.  It’s too soon to say how many have been lost. https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2024/9/8/bridge-fire/

The Line Fire is at 37k acres with 18% containment.  The arson-caused fire is burning towards Big Bear.  A suspect from Norco is in custody.  Part or all of Highways 18, 38, and 330 are closed.  Evacuation shelters are in Victorville and Fontana.  Cooler weather helped limit its spread overnight.  Four structures have been confirmed damaged or destroyed and there have been three fire-related injuries. One of the structures lost in the Line Fire was the 98-year old Keller Peak fire lookout station.   https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2024/9/5/line-fire/  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/09/11/98-year-old-keller-peak-fire-lookout-falls-as-line-fire-burns-in-san-bernardino-national-forest/

The newest – the Airport Fire, which started Monday in Orange County is now at 23k acres with 5% containment. There have been extensive evacuation orders and warnings from Trabuco Canyon to the east in Orange County and Lake Elsinore and Temescal Valley west of the 15 freeway in Riverside County where the evacuation centers are Temescal Canyon High School in Lake Elsinore and Santiago High School in Corona.  Ortega Highway is closed from east of Quarry to Grand Avenue in Lake Elsinore.  Cooler weather is helping firefighting efforts.  Homes have been lost on the western edge of Lake Elsinore adjacent to Ortega Highway.  Firefighting efforts are being concentrated there.  Six structures are confirmed damaged or destroyed.  There have been 10 civilian and fire personnel injuries.  All schools in the Lake Elsinore district are closed again today. https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2024/9/9/airport-fire/

Extensive smoke from these fires will cause poor air quality throughout Southern California today.  Some events may be cancelled due to air quality and outdoor exertion is discouraged.

A fatal accident on Highway 76 between Pala Rey Youth Camp and the power station at Pala del Norte caused a full closure of 76 for over two hours last evening beginning around 7:45p.  https://www.villagenews.com/story/2024/09/05/news/pala-traffic-collision-leaves-unknown-injuries/76969.html

There were a cluster of earthquakes just north of Malibu last evening.  The largest was 4.7 at 7:28p.  It was felt from Lompoc and Bakersfield to the Mexican border and as far inland as Indio.   https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/ci40731847/executive

As of midday trading on Wall Street, all three major US indexes showed modest gains.  The Dow was up a tenth of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up three tenths.  The Nasdaq was up a half percent.  Gold shot up $34.30 an ounce on the Comex to $2,576.70.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $1.84 to $69.15 a barrel.

The Federal Reserve won’t be pulling the trigger on interest rate cuts until next week, yet mortgage rates are already starting to fall.  That’s thanks to cooling consumer inflation and a fairly stable jobs market, both of which are indicators which will lead to cuts by the Fed.  The average rate for a 30-year fixed rate mortgage over the past seven days is 6.2%, down from 6.35% last week.  They’ve been dropping ever since it became almost a certainty that Fed would lower the prime lending rate this month – the first such cut since 2020.  The Fed does not directly set mortgage rates.  But it does influence them through movement in bond yields.  The 10-year US Treasury note moves in anticipation of actions by the Fed and has been falling for several weeks. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/12/economy/mortgage-rates-september-12/index.html

Stock in Kroger, the parent company of Ralphs supermarkets shot up 6% after profits beat expectations even though quarterly sales fell slightly short of estimates.  Kroger’s CEO warned that even more affluent customers are now being careful with their spending.  https://www.marketwatch.com/story/krogers-stock-rises-after-profit-beat-offsets-sales-miss-35c802ab?mod=mw_latestnews

General Mills is sending its North American yogurt division back home to France for $2.1b.  The cereal maker has been looking to sell off its division which makes Yoplait, Liberte and other brands since Spring.  Though Yoplait is a money maker with net sales of $1.5b this year, it faces strong competition from Dannon and Chiobani, and General Mills wants to concentrate on its core business.  Yoplait was started by a group of French dairy farmers in 1964 and wound up with General Mills through a franchise agreement that gave them exclusive rights to market the brand in the US beginning in 1977.  General Mills acquired a majority stake from a private equity firm and the French dairy cooperative, Sodiaal in 2011.  It sold the European Yoplait operations back to Sodiaal in 2021.  Now they and another French dairy group are getting the US division as well. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/12/business/general-mills-yogurt-lactalis/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Among new products unveiled by Apple on Tuesday were its latest AirPods Pro model which can double as a medical device.  The wireless headphones will have an available software upgrade to allow them to act as a clinical-grade over-the-counter hearing aid.  That feature of the new AirPods was authorized today by the US Food and Drug Administration.  With prescription hearing aids costing thousands, the $249 AirPods Pro 2 will be significantly less expensive and more accessible for those with hearing loss.  To access the hearing aid function, AirPod Pro 2 users will have to take a hearing test, which lets Apple know which frequencies to boost.  The FDA made over-the-counter hearing aids available to the public two years ago, but cautions they are not for those with profound hearing loss or those under 18, both of whom still need to consult a health care professional.  For those with mild to moderate hearing loss, the Apple device could help remove the financial barrier and stigma of hearing aids.  30m US adults have some degree of hearing loss.  But according to the FDA, only one fifth of those seek assistance for it, even though use of hearing aids can reduce the rate of cognitive decline and lower the risk of depression. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/10/tech/apple-airpods-pro-hearing-aids/index.html

It’s obvious McDonald’s $5 value meal is striking a chord with consumers.  The fast food giant is extending the promotion to December.  Introduced in June, the one-month-only promotion was extended an extra month in July.  Now it’s being extended again.  McDonald’s had often touted its ability to raise menu prices without affecting sales.  That came to an end earlier this year with consumers not defecting to competing chains, but holding tighter to their money and just staying home to eat.  Since reporting weaker-than-expected sales earlier this year, Mickey D’s has followed the path of low-price promotions.  Starbucks, Wendy’s and Burger King all responded to McDonald’s value meal success with similar promotions. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/12/business/mcdonalds-5-dollar-value-meal-december/index.html
