33k union members walked off the job today at Boeing after overwhelmingly rejecting a proposed four-year contract with the aircraft manufacturer.  The first strike at Boeing in 16 years will virtually halt commercial airplane production.  Depending on how long it lasts, it could disrupt nearly 10k suppliers in all 50 states.  Boeing employs a total of 150k Americans and estimates its contribution the US economy at $79b with direct or indirect support of 1.6m jobs.  The rejected deal would have given workers a 25% raise over four years plus job security with a promise to build Boeing’s next new model at a union plant. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/13/business/strike-boeing-vote-iam-751-hnk-intl/index.html

Boar’s Head has indefinitely shut down its deli meat plant in Virginia due to an outbreak of deadly listeria.  The plant’s 500 workers will be given severance and offered relocation.  www.nytimes.com

Hyundai and General Motors have agreed to work together to develop new vehicles, supply chains and technologies to cut costs and be more market-agile.  It’s not just to combat the threat from Chinese automakers – especially those that market EVs.  The two auto making giants will collaborate on developing all future clean energy technologies involving internal combustion, hydrogen and electric vehicles.  GM is currently the largest US auto maker.  Hyundai is the world’s third-largest by sales.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/12/cars/south-korea-us-hyundai-gm-partnership-intl-hnk/index.html

The Social Security System is currently paying out in benefits more than it collects in payroll tax and drawing from reserves to cover the difference.  Once the reserves are gone, the law says benefits have to be cut.  According to a report by the non-partisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, if Congress doesn’t act soon, retirees will only receive 79% of their scheduled Social Security benefits beginning with the first year of underfunding in 2033.  About 10k retirees nationwide enter the Social Security system every day.  Even an estimated 21% cut in benefits could wreak havoc on the lives of the four out of ten seniors who live solely on an average monthly Social Security payment of $1,907.  According to Chris Towner, the policy director of the CRFB, the longer lawmakers wait to fix Social Security, the worse the problem will be.  Towner told CBS MoneyWatch that a 27% payroll tax increase or a 21% cut in benefits to all current recipients could solve the problem right now.  Waiting until 2033 would cause the necessary tax increase to grow to 32% and the needed cut to 25%.  Although dollar cuts in benefits would be less for lower income retirees, it would still be a greater share of their income.  The system will never completely run out of money.  But with no action by Congress, the automatic benefit cut would grow from 21% across the board in 2033 to 31% by 2098.  https://www.kiplinger.com/retirement/social-security/cuts-to-social-security-benefits-could-top-dollar21000-for-high-income-couples

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

New movies opening in wide release this week include a remake of the thriller, “Speak No Evil”, the action adventure thriller “The Killer’s Game”, the animated sci-fi action feature, “Transformers One”, the concert documentary “Usher: Rendezvous in Paris”, and the faith-based dramatic sequel, “God’s Not Dead 5: In God We Trust”.  https://www.movieinsider.com/movies/september/2024?view=list

Actor Chad McQueen, the son of Steve McQueen has died at the age of 63.  He’s best known as the bully, Dutch in the first two Karate Kid movies.  He died Wednesday of organ failure at his ranch in Palm Desert.  He’d been injured in a fall in 2020 from which he never fully recovered.  Like his father, Chad loved auto racing.  A crash at Daytona while practicing for the 24-Hour event ended his racing career in 2006.  The family has requested donations in his name to Boy’s Republic in Chino Hills.  https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/chad-mcqueen-dead-karate-kid-steve-mcqueen-1236000439/

Released yesterday as a preview, OpenAI’s latest artificial intelligence model is said to be able to “reason” and solve harder science, math and coding problems than its predecessor.  Examples of uses for OpenAI 01 include use by healthcare researchers to annotate cell sequencing data and by physicists to generate “complicated mathematical formulas needed for quantum optics.”  In a qualifying exam for the International Mathematics Olympiad, the new AI models correctly solved 83% of the problems.  One concern for future improvements to AI is the amount of power it’ll take to allow new AI models to think not just for seconds at a time, but for hours, days or weeks.  The electrical demand could worsen global warming.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/13/tech/chatgpt-openai-o1-human-reasoning/index.html

  • 1958, before being allowed to make his BBC television debut to perform “Move It”, Cliff Richard was required to shave his sideburns – a look favored by British bad boys at the time.
  • In 1960, following a payola scandal, the Federal Communications Act was amended to make it illegal for radio stations and their employees to accept cash or gifts in exchange for airplay of records.
  • On the same day in Britain, a campaign was underway to ban the Ray Peterson hit “Tell Laura I Love Her”.  It was denounced as likely to inspire a teen-age “glorious death cult”.  The song describes a lovesick boy who drives in a stock car race to win the love of a girl.  He crashes and speaks the words in the title just before he dies.
  • In 1963, Graham Nash fell out of The Hollies touring van after a show in Scotland.  He was checking to see if the door was locked.  It wasn’t.  They were going down the road at about 40 miles an hour at the time.

  • In 1986, Berlin had the #1 single with “Take My Breath Away”.  It and the Righteous Brothers’ “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feelin’” were both featured in that year’s movie blockbuster “Top Gun”.
  • In 1987, Michael Jackson began the first of six weeks at #1 on the album chart with “Bad”.
  • In 1991, Geffen Records threw a party to celebrate the release of Nirvana’s single “Smells Like Teen Spirit.  The band got thrown out of their own party for starting a food fight.
  • In 2005, Jimi Hendrix’ childhood home in Seattle was spared from demolition at the last minute and moved to a site opposite the cemetery where he’d been buried 35 years earlier.  The house was repurposed as a community center.
