An appeals court ruled yesterday that Federal Reserve governor, Lisa Cook can remain in her job in spite of President Trump’s executive order firing her. This is the first time a President has attempted such an action since the founding of the independent central bank 112 years ago. Cook is an appointee of the Biden administration. The White House, which has accused Cook of mortgage fraud has said it will appeal yesterday’s decision by the D.C. circuit court to the Supreme Court. But it only has hours to do so and still accomplish its original intent of ousting Cook before the Fed votes on interest rates. The Fed meeting has already begun. https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/us-appeals-court-rejects-trump-bid-oust-feds-lisa-cook-2025-09-16/
The Trump administration is ordering Delta Airlines to unwind its joint venture with Aeromexico by January 1. The Transportation Department called the nearly ten-year old venture anticompetitive in that it allows the two airlines to coordinate schedules and prices for flights between the U.S. and Mexico. The executive order does not undo Delta’s 20% minority equity stake in Aeromexico. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/16/trump-administration-orders-delta-aeromexico-to-unwind-joint-venture-by-jan-1.html
President Trump has filed a $15b defamation lawsuit against the New York Times and four of its writers, accusing them of harming his business and personal reputation. The suit alleges that articles and a book published by the Times make the case that he built his fortune and reputation in part through fraud. The suit mentions an interview by the Times in which retired Marine Corp Gen. John F. Kelly who served as Trump’s chief of staff during his first administration warned that he believed Trump met the definition of a fascist. Trump’s lawyers also say the paper wrongly credited Mark Burnett, the producer of the TV reality show “The Apprentice” with its success, rather than Trump, who served as the show’s host and star. Legal experts point out that proving defamation in court has a high bar for public figures. They must prove the defendants knew what they were publishing was false, or that they had serious doubts about the truth in their statements. https://www.npr.org/2025/09/16/nx-s1-5543030/donald-trump-nytimes-lawsuit
LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
Movie star, film industry visionary and founder of the Sundance Institute, Robert Redford has died. He was in more than 80 movies, was an activist for multiple causes, and changed the course of independent filmmaking through his Sundance Institute. As a fairly misbehaved schoolboy in a less-than-affluent part of Los Angeles, he dreamed of being an artist and attended the University of Colorado at Boulder on a baseball scholarship. He worked on an oil rig to make money to study painting in Europe for a year. Back at art school in New York, Redford came to theater acting through an interest in set design and was soon starring on Broadway in Neil Simon’s hit play, “Barefoot in the Park”. He reprised the role in the 1967 movie version co-starring Jane Fonda. He guest starred in a number of high-profile mid-1960s TV shows, but got his big break alongside Paul Newman in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” – the most successful film of 1969. That led to a string of hits including “The Sting”, “The Way We Were”, “The Great Gatsby”, “All the President’s Men”, and “Jeremiah Johnson”. His first directing role was in 1980 with “Ordinary People” which won best picture and best director. But he never won an Oscar for acting. The following year, Redford founded Sundance, which became a launch pad for independent directors including Quentin Tarantino, Steven Soderbergh, and Kevin Smith. Redford cared about the environment and indigenous rights. He died in his sleep this morning at his home in Utah at the age of 89. https://www.npr.org/2025/09/16/1068370058/robert-redford-obituary
A poll by Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research says sports fans are unhappy with the trouble and expense it takes to watch their favorite teams, and sports in general on multiple media platforms. About 4 out of 10 people who follow sports “extremely” or “closely” use cable or satellite along with a sports-only streaming platform. Two out of ten casual sports fans do so. If you want to watch out-of-market teams or catch every game, you just about have to do it on multiple platforms. Activate an NFL package in August. Cancel it after the Super Bowl. Keep paying your cable bill because it’s the only way to get all games for the local baseball team. Then add a subscription to the new ESPN direct streaming service for NCAA. In addition to the complexity, sports fans are not fans of the total cost of doing all that, with many foregoing at least one team or sport they’d like to follow because it’s just too expensive, which in turn leads to less interest in that sport or team. The poll also found that sports fans are a little old fashioned in that they’re less likely to be cord-cutters, with a higher percentage still subscribing to cable or satellite than the general population. https://apnews.com/article/sports-streaming-cable-tv-poll-52a4d826a8baf05d46e71b1aa6a6fc80
Ed McMahon is rolling in his grave. Although Publishers Clearing House filed for bankruptcy back in April, it’s only just coming to light that lifetime prize winners were never made aware of the company’s difficulties, and now they’ve been cut off. In its reorganization, the company listed liabilities between $50m and $100m, including promised prizes. As part of that reorganization, PCH was sold to ARB Interactive. But there was no agreement in the sale to continue paying PCH’s “forever” prize winners. Bottom line, the winners’ annual prize payments have stopped and that’s causing grief for those who counted on the income. https://www.mensjournal.com/news/metal-detectorist-pleads-guilty-lying
On this day in music history – September 16,
- 1963, “She Loves You” by The Beatles was released in the U.S. on Swan Records. Although at #1 in Britain, it was ignored here until the following year, several months after the group’s U.S. breakthrough with “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” in late December of ’63.

- In 2008, Motown songwriter and producer Norman Whitfield died of complications from diabetes. He’d collaborated with Barret Strong on songs including “I Heard It Through the Grapevine”, “(I Know) I’m Losing You”, “Cloud Nine”, “War”, and “Pala Was a Rolling Stone”.
