The California Department of Food and Agriculture yesterday declared a citrus quarantine in Fallbrook after discovering the fatal disease HLB in a tangerine tree in a residential neighborhood during regular inspection.  The bacterial disease, commonly called citrus greening is a major threat to the county’s $138m annual citrus crop.  As many as 100 growers with approximately 830 acres of groves are affected by the quarantine, as well as four commercial nurseries and the downtown Fallbrook weekly farmer’s market.  The disease is not harmful to people or animals, but is deadly to citrus trees.  It’s spread by the insect knows as the Asian citrus psyllid. https://www.countynewscenter.com/state-declares-citrus-quarantine-in-fallbrook/

A man was shot and critically injured by an off-duty police officer yesterday as the result of an apparent road-rage incident in Murrieta.  It happened about 9a on Murrieta Hot Springs Road near Margarita Road.  A Hemet police officer witnesses an encounter between two people in a nearby parking lot.  One of them was shot multiple times when the officer attempted to intervene.  The victim was hospitalized in critical condition.  No one else was injured.  Murrieta Hot Springs Road was closed to traffic for investigation through the afternoon.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/09/16/off-duty-police-shooting-leaves-suspect-critically-wounded-in-murrieta/

A Camp Pendleton Marine who sold undercover agents ghost guns has been sentenced to 37 months in prison.  23-year old former Lance Cpl. Christian Ferrari from El Cajon had pleaded guilty in January to four counts of dealing firearms without a license.  Base officials have not commented on his discharge.  Undercover agents had purchased AR-15-style rifles from Ferrari on four separate occasions in 2023.  The ATF agents testified that telling Ferrari the guns would be used to protect illegal marijuana grows or sent to an associate in Mexico didn’t deter him from selling them the guns. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/09/16/camp-pendleton-marine-who-made-and-sold-ghost-rifles-sentenced-to-prison/?itm_source=parsely-api

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres beat the visiting Astros 3-1.  Yu Darvish got the win, allowing three hits but no runs over six innings.  Jackson Merrill and Jurickson Profar each homered and Manny Machado drove in San Diego’s other run.  The Dodgers finished their series in Atlanta with a 9-0 shutout of the Braves.  Lowly Colorado edged the Diamondbacks 3-2.  That leaves San Diego still 3 ½ games behind first-place LA in the NL West.  The D-backs fall to 2 ½ games behind San Diego.  With two weeks left in the season, they’re still the most likely second NL Wild Card.  The Mets and Braves still have an outside chance.  In the American League, in the battle of the cellar dwellers, the White Sox beat the Angels in Anaheim 8-4.  The Yankees, Guardians and Astros all pretty much have a lock on winning their divisions, while Baltimore is close to a lock for a Wild Card.  The second AL Wild Card is a toss-up between the Mets, Royals and Braves. https://www.espn.com/mlb/standings

In the Minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm play the Nuts in Game 2 of the league championship in Modesto tonight.  It’s must-win for the Storm after losing Sunday’s Game 1.  https://www.milb.com/lake-elsinore/schedule/2024-09

In the NFL – Last night, it was close.  Atlanta rallied to beat Philadelphia 22-21 with 34 seconds left thanks to a six-play, 70-yard touchdown drive.  Philly committed the only turnover of the game seven seconds later on their own 43-yard line, effectively ending the game. Though the Eagles held the ball 11 minutes longer than the Falcons, all other stats were pretty equal.

In college football – There’s a new #1.  Texas swapped places with former #1 Georgia in the new AP Top 25 this week.  Ohio State, Alabama and Ole Miss remain at #’s 3 through 5.  Tennessee and Missouri swapped places at #6 and 7.  Miami moved up two to #8.  Nothing changed more than a place or two since all the top-ranked teams won last weekend. https://www.espn.com/college-football/rankings

In Soccer – LAFC hosts Austin and the Galaxy play at Portland tomorrow evening.

In Lacrosse – The National Lacrosse League schedule for the upcoming season has been released.  The San Diego Seals, who finished last year with a 13 and 5 record and made it to the league semi-finals will open their season at Pechanga Arena hosting the Philadelphia Wings on Sunday, December 1 at 2p.  https://www.sealslax.com/

In local high school sports:

Bonsall – girls’ volleyball at High Tech North County at 5p

Great Oak – girls’ golf hosting Murrieta Valley at 3p; field hockey at Temecula Valley at 3:30p

Fallbrook – girls’ golf hosting Ramona at Pala Mesa at 3:30p; girls’ tennis against El Camino at 3:30p, JV hosting, varsity away; girls’ volleyball hosting Bonita Vista at 4:30p; boys’ varsity water polo at Mt. Miguel at 4:30p

Valley Center – girls’ volleyball at Tri-City Christian at 3:30p; girls’ tennis at Mission Hills at 4p; field hockey hosting Canyon Crest Academy at 5:30p

TikTok’s court battle to remain intact and available to Americans began yesterday.  The goal is to overturn a law created in Congress in April to ban the app in this country unless it’s sold to a US company within a year.  TikTok says a sale that quickly is impossible, and that the ban is unconstitutional and violates the First Amendment rights of 170m American users.  Their lawyers say Congress didn’t provide enough evidence to ban the app based on national security concerns since much of it is classified.  Judges however did get to see the unredacted version of the evidence.  Some TikTok creators, who are co-plaintiffs in the case say they have a constitutional right to work with any publisher they want.  The Department of Justice’s defense is that it isn’t targeting platform content, but rather the platform’s foreign ownership.  They point out that the code powering TikTok’s algorithm is written in China and that the Chinese government has leverage over all Chinese-owned businesses and could use data gathered by the platform against the US.  A decision in the case is expected as soon as November.  Experts say it could go either way.  A Pew Research Center poll shows the share of Americans supporting a ban is down from 50% when the bill was before Congress to 32% now. www.morningbrew.com

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram says it will bar Russian media outlets from posting on the platforms.  It accused them of deceptive influence operations and attempts to evade detection.  The largest of the Russian media companies, RT had 7.2m followers on Facebook and 1m on Instagram. https://variety.com/2024/digital/news/meta-ban-russian-state-media-1236147221/

Instagram announced yesterday it will implement new “teen account” settings for millions of underage users, making those accounts private and restricting the kinds of content those users can view on the app.  16 and 17-year old users will be able to manually change their settings back to the way they were.  But 13 to 15-year old will need parental approval to change the settings. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/17/tech/instagram-teens-protected-accounts/index.html

Amazon is done with flexible work for its corporate staff that allowed them to come to the office just three days per week.  As of January 2, everyone will have to show up all five traditional business days.  CEO Andy Jassy said in his memo to staff that the company wants to make its offices feel like 2019 again.  He said the company will also have fewer managers in its corporate structure moving forward.  www.NYTimes.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Following a six-month investigation, authorities in New York arrested music mogul Sean Combs.  He’s been indicted on sex trafficking and racketeering charges and accused of forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery and obstruction of justice.  Prosecutors say he relied on help for all of this from employees of his business.  The 54-year old founder of Bad Boy Records has been the target of multiple lawsuits by people who alleged physical or sexual abuse.  His lawyer says Combs will plead not guilty to the latest charges. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/09/17/sean-diddy-combs-has-been-indicted-on-sex-trafficking-and-racketeering-charges/

Miley Cyrus was sued yesterday for allegedly copying Bruno Mars’ “When I Was Your Man” in the making of her song, “Flowers”.  Mars is not listed as a plaintiff, just his record company, Tempo Music Investments.  Flowers debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 last year and stayed there for eight weeks with a total of 55 weeks on the chart.  It earned Cyrus her first two Grammys.  It’s not known how much is being sought in damages. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/09/17/miley-cyrus-sued-flowers-bruno-mars-when-i-wa-your-man/

According to Informa Connect Academy, Elon Musk is on track to become the world’s first trillionaire by 2027.  His net worth has been growing at an annual average of 110% in recent years.  But he has competition.  Nvidia CEO and co-founder Jensen Huang and Indian billionaire Gautam Adani could each be worth $1 trillion in 2028.  Musk’s chances of getting there first are tied to Tesla, the EV company he founded.  He owns 13%, which is now worth about $93b.  Tesla is currently the world’s most-valuable auto company.  At $710b, it’s worth more than Coca-Cola, Bank of America and Boeing combined. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/17/business/elon-musk-richest-person-trillionaire/index.html

Attention iPhone users, you have an operating system update.  Apple has released its latest software update, iOS18.  It doesn’t include any of the AI capabilities Apple has been talking about recently, but there are a lot of changes including the ability to personalize your home screen, add effects to your messages including bold or italic font.  You can now more easily include your Android friends in a group chat.  So, head to your iPhone’s settings and as Morning Brew puts it, “give your phone the tech equivalent of a new pair of pants.”  www.morningbrew.com

Fast food chain Chipotle announced yesterday that two of its locations here in Southern California have robots making your food.  One is on Magnolia Street in Huntington Beach where the Autocado can halve, skin, and core an avocado in 26 seconds and deposit it into a bowl for a human worker to mix into guacamole.  Even if some human workers could do it faster, the Autocado frees them up for other tasks.  Chipotle says it takes 50 minutes to make a batch of guac and that the chain will use 130m pounds of avocados this year.  They’re also testing a machine at the Coast Highway store in Corona del Mar called the Makeline that builds bowls and salads, which make up about two thirds of all of Chipotle’s digital orders.  Crew and customer feedback will determine if the technology gets a nationwide release.  https://newsroom.chipotle.com/2024-09-16-CHIPOTLE-DEBUTS-AUTOCADO-AND-THE-AUGMENTED-MAKELINE-BY-HYPHEN-IN-RESTAURANTS https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/16/24246401/chipotle-robotics-autocado-avocado-peeling-bowl-assembly-line

On this day in music history – September 17,

  • 1931, RCA Victor demonstrated the first 33 1/3 rpm recorded disc – the format most of us today recognize when we think of vinyl records.  It failed to attract consumers 90 years ago due to the high price of the record players – $95 which is equivalent to $1,200 today.  The format wasn’t revived until 1948.
  • In 1964, The Beatles appeared at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City.  They were paid $150k for the show, which was more than any other previous act had ever been paid for a live show.  Tickets were $4.50.
  • In 1967, The Doors were banned from future appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show after Jim Morrison broke his promise to producers to change the lyrics in “Light My Fire” to avoid singing “girl we couldn’t get much HIGHER”.   Sullivan’s people felt the word “higher” glorified drug use.   On that night’s one and only appearance, they also sang their new single, “People Are Strange”.
  • In 1969, media had fully latched on to the rumor that Paul McCartney had died in 1966 and that a double had taken his place at all public appearances for nearly three years.  Paul and then-girlfriend Jane Asher were in fact, on vacation in Kenya at the time of his alleged 1966 demise in Scotland.
  • In 1978, the video for Queen’s “Bicycle Race” was filmed at Wimbledon featuring 65 naked female models riding around the track on rented bikes.  The rental company reportedly demanded payment for replacement saddles when they found out how their bikes had been used.
  • In 1991, over 4m copies of Guns ‘N’ Roses’ “Use Your Illusion I” and Use Your Illusion II” albums were simultaneously released for sale, making it the largest record debut shipment in US music history.
  • In 1996 a bomb addressed to Icelandic singer Bjork was discovered at a South London mail sorting office.  Police in Miami had alerted London officials after finding the body of Ricardo Lopez, who’d made a video of himself making the bomb before killing himself.
  • In 2011, the estate of Jimi Hendrix gave the approval for another round of archival releases, 41 years after the singer’s death.  They included an expanded version of his 1968 Winterland concerts, a revamp of a 1972 live compilation, an upgrade of his final U.K. festival appearance on DVD, and a DVD reissue of some talk show appearances.
  • On the same day, Adele was at #1 on the singles chart with “Someone Like You”.

Born on this day …

  • In 1923, country singer Hank Williams, who released 35 Top Ten country singles – five of them posthumously.  Eleven of them hit #1.  Williams died in 1953 at the age of 29.
  • In 1933, Jeanine Deckers, also known as The Singing Nun, with her 1963 #1 hit “Dominique”.
  • In 1939, Lamonte McLemore from The 5th
  • In 1950, Fee Waybill, lead singer with The Tubes.
  • In 1962, Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, who had a #1 hit in Britain in 1999 with “Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen”.
