A 22-year old motorcyclist from Perris was killed in a crash in the 2200 block of Murrieta Road yesterday morning.  Zacary Korman was found unresponsive around 9:45a.  Investigators say he’d been southbound on Murrieta Road near Orange Avenue when he lost control and hit a light pole.  He later died at a hospital. https://patch.com/california/murrieta/perris-motorcycle-rider-22-idd-fatal-crash

Authorities have identified the head and torso found in the trunk of an impounded Tesla registered to singer, D4vd as that of 15-year old Celeste Rivas, who’d been reported missing from Lake Elsinore since April of 2024.  The discovery was made September 8 at a Hollywood tow yard. https://patch.com/california/lakeelsinore-wildomar/body-singers-impounded-car-identified-missing-lake-elsinore-girl-15

A 53-year old man whose identity has not been released was arrested Monday afternoon for intentionally setting two vegetation fires along the 78 freeway in Oceanside around 1:30p.  Fire crews found three separate ignition points and quickly put out flames which burned a total of about 2 acres.  A search by police drones and a Sheriff’s helicopter ended with an arrest at the eastbound 78 onramp from El Camino Real around 2:30p.  The suspect was booked into Vista jail without bail on suspicion of arson, vandalism and violation of parole. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/09/16/arson-arrest-made-after-fires-started-near-sr-78-in-oceanside/

Oceanside city councilman Jimmy Figueroa and deputy mayor Eric Joyce will propose rules to limit city cooperation with federal immigration enforcement at tonight’s city council meeting at 5p.  They include requiring a judicial warrant to conduct raids in private areas of city property, and only sharing sensitive or personal data with ICE and other agencies if required by law.  There would also be new signs erected and a website established so residents know their rights.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/oceanside-leaders-to-consider-new-immigration-policy

After years of debate and legal wrangling over how the land should be used, Oceanside city staff is reviewing plans for a residential project that would add 229 townhomes and condominiums along North River Road.  In 2022, the Oceanside City Council approved rezoning the land from light industrial to medium-density residential, paving the way for the Tierra Norte project on about 26 acres.  The following year, a legal settlement with Preserve Calavera limited the total number of homes that could be built on two N. River Road parcels to 359 units.  Developers Trumark Homes and Nagata Brothers have now applied to build 229 units on the site, referred to as Parcel B at 4617 N. River Road, which would account for most of the allowable units. https://thecoastnews.com/townhomes-condos-proposed-for-north-river-road-site/

In the NBA – A new basketball league based in Europe as a joint venture announced by the NBA and FIBA in March could begin play as soon as 2027 or ’28.  NBA Commissioner Adam Silver made the prediction yesterday.  Earlier, he’d said such an ambitious timeline might mean the league would more likely get off the ground around the time of the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.  About one out of six current NBA players is from Europe including Denver’s Nikola Jokic from Serbia and Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo from Greece, who between them, won five of the last seven MVP awards. https://apnews.com/article/nba-europe-adam-silver-2931fede9c26195254d56f3e0a7d872f

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow gained a half percent.  The S&P 500 fell a tenth.  And the Nasdaq was down four tenths.  Gold fell $6.70 on the Comex, trading at $3,718.40 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures traded down 22 cents at $64.30 a barrel.

The Federal Reserve today announced a quarter percent cut in the prime lending rate today in spite of continuing high inflation and strong consumer spending – both of which would normally be fought with higher interest rates.  The cut is intended to help the struggling labor market.  It’s the first cut by the Fed since President Trump took office in his second term.  Surprisingly strong August retail sales numbers released yesterday caused a rise in Treasury yields and pushed gold past its prior record high.  The stock market has already factored in a rate cut.  Investors are now worried that political interference will influence Fed decisions. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/why-investors-are-on-high-alert-for-any-signs-of-political-interference-in-this-weeks-fed-decision-96d7be2f?mod=home_lead

Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream has quit the company after 47 years over a loss of trust with now-parent company Unilever.  In an open letter yesterday, Greenfield said he could no longer “in good conscience” remain an employee of the company which he felt had been silenced from its values of “peace, justice, and human rights.”  He said, the independence for Ben & Jerry’s to be “more than just an ice cream company” had been guaranteed when packaged food giant Unilever bought the brand in 2000 for $326m.  Five months ago, Ben & Jerry’s filed a lawsuit accusing Unilever of firing its CEO, David Stever over his support of political activism.  Then in November, it filed another lawsuit accusing Unilever of silencing Ben & Jerry’s public statements in support of Palestinian refugees.  Greenfield and partner, Ben Cohen founded Ben & Jerry’s in 1978 in Burlington, Vermont, where the company is still based. https://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/ben-jerrys-co-founder-jerry-greenfield-resigns-unilever-campaigning-rcna231819

Mortgage rates are at a 3-year low, falling 12 basis points yesterday to 6.13% for the average 30-year fixed rate loan. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/16/mortgage-rates-drop-to-3-year-low-ahead-of-fed-meeting.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

You might disagree when you see your credit card bill, but concert tickets are still relatively underpriced.  That’s the opinion of Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino who compares the price of concert tickets to those for live sporting events.  Rapino and Smith Entertainment Group CEO Ryan Smith said this week that live events are more central than ever to culture and commerce since the pandemic.  Smith’s group owns the Utah Jazz and the state’s new NHL franchise.  His group and Live Nation are partnering on a new downtown entertainment district in Salt Lake City anchored by sporting and music venues. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/17/live-nation-ceo-demand-concert-tickets-underpriced.html

Two flying cars that were to be the highlight of an air show in China collided mid-air during rehearsals with one catching fire during landing.  The maker of the vehicles said everyone at the scene was safe.  But CNN reported one person was injured.  The Chinese manufacturer was hoping to showcase the vertical takeoff and landing flying cars which it will sell for about $300k each.  Manufacturer AeroHT claims to have taken 3k orders for the flying cars.  https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn5qk4de997o

On this day in music history – September 17,

  • 1931, RCA Victor demonstrated the first 33 1/3 rpm recorded disc – the format most of us today recognize when we think of vinyl records.  It failed to attract consumers over 90 years ago due to the high price of the record players – $95 which is equivalent to $1,200 today.  The format wasn’t revived until 1948.
  • In 1964, The Beatles appeared at Municipal Stadium in Kansas City.  They were paid $150k for the show, which was more than any other previous act had ever been paid for a live show.  Tickets were $4.50.
  • In 1967, The Doors were banned from future appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show after Jim Morrison broke his promise to producers to change the lyrics in “Light My Fire” to avoid singing “girl we couldn’t get much HIGHER”.   Sullivan’s people felt the word “higher” glorified drug use.   On that night’s one and only appearance, they also sang their new single, “People Are Strange”.
  • In 1969, media had fully latched on to the rumor that Paul McCartney had died in 1966 and that a double had taken his place at all public appearances for nearly three years.  Paul and then-girlfriend Jane Asher were in fact, on vacation in Kenya at the time of his alleged 1966 demise in Scotland.
  • In 1978, the video for Queen’s “Bicycle Race” was filmed at Wimbledon featuring 65 naked female models riding around the track on rented bikes.  The rental company reportedly demanded payment for replacement saddles when they found out how their bikes had been used.
  • In 1991, over 4m copies of Guns ‘N’ Roses’ “Use Your Illusion I” and Use Your Illusion II” albums were simultaneously released for sale, making it the largest record debut shipment in US music history.
  • In 1996 a bomb addressed to Icelandic singer Bjork was discovered at a South London mail sorting office.  Police in Miami had alerted London officials after finding the body of Ricardo Lopez, who’d made a video of himself making the bomb before killing himself.
  • In 2011, the estate of Jimi Hendrix gave the approval for another round of archival releases, 41 years after the singer’s death.  They included an expanded version of his 1968 Winterland concerts, a revamp of a 1972 live compilation, an upgrade of his final U.K. festival appearance on DVD, and a DVD reissue of some talk show appearances.
  • On the same day, Adele was at #1 on the singles chart with “Someone Like You”.

Born on this day …

  • In 1923, country singer Hank Williams, who released 35 Top Ten country singles – five of them posthumously.  Eleven of them hit #1.  Williams died in 1953 at the age of 29.
  • In 1933, Jeanine Deckers, also known as The Singing Nun, with her 1963 #1 hit “Dominique”.
  • In 1939, Lamonte McLemore from The 5th
  • In 1950, Fee Waybill, lead singer with The Tubes.
  • In 1962, Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, who had a #1 hit in Britain in 1999 with “Everybody’s Free to Wear Sunscreen”.
