Little if any additional acreage has burned in the three major Southern California wildfires in the past 24 hours.  The total acreage burned statewide so far this year is just a few thousand less than a million acres.  The Bridge fire in LA and San Bernardino counties is now 37% contained at just under 55k acres. 73 structures destroyed, 18 damaged and 4 people injured. https://www.cnn.com/business/live-news/federal-reserve-interest-rate-09-18-24/index.html

The Line fire in the San Bernardino Mountains west of Big Bear is 50% contained at just over 39k acres.  Still only one confirmed structure destroyed – that being the Keller Peak Forestry Department lookout, four damaged and 4 people injured.  https://www.cnn.com/business/live-news/federal-reserve-interest-rate-09-18-24/index.html

The nine-day old Airport fire in Orange and Riverside Counties is 35% contained at about 23,500 acres. 160 structures destroyed, 34 damaged and 15 people injured. The latest injury happened late yesterday morning.  A firefighter tumbled about 100 feet down a hillside near North Main Divide in Riverside County.  A helicopter hoisted the injured firefighter to safety. https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2024/9/9/airport-fire/

Some evacuations continue for all three with more roads including Ortega Highway now reopened.   Quite a few are still closed including parts of Angelus Crest/Highway 2 and Highway 330 north of Highland along with many smaller mountain roads.  Evacuations have been lifted in the Mt. Baldy and Wrightwood areas.  https://www.sigalert.com/Map.asp?lat=34.11467&lon=-117.24116&z=2

A pedestrian was killed in a hit and run at an Escondido intersection just after 6a yesterday.  A vehicle turning right onto northbound Broadway from westbound Mission struck 58-year old Miguel Leonides Garcia.  He later died at the hospital.  Witnesses describe the vehicle as a white off-road SUV with large spare tire and red high-lift style jack on the back.  Anyone with information is asked to call Escondido PD.  https://patch.com/california/san-diego/pedestrian-killed-north-county-hit-run-crash

Oceanside’s Frontwave Arena held its first public event Monday with a repeat performance last night.  The 7,500-seat venue hosted the “Gold Over America Tour” headlined by Olympic gold medal gymnast Simone Biles.  The arena is also the new home of the San Diego Sockers and the San Diego Clippers, the G-league team affiliated with the LA Clippers.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/frontwave-arena-hosts-first-event-with-gold-over-america-tour-gymnast-simone-biles

Riverside County Supervisors yesterday approved $1.6m in appropriations to fill early gaps in the current fiscal year budget.  The unanimous vote pulled money from cash reserves without notable impact on the General Fund.  Most of the appropriation goes to costs tied to the March Air Reserve Base Joint Powers Authority.  https://patch.com/california/temecula/supes-sign-1-6-million-appropriations

About 100 SDG&E customers in South Escondido lost power this morning at 4:24a.  Equipment was being repaired and power was expected to be back on by noon. https://www.sdge.com/residential/customer-service/outage-center/outage-map

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres lost 4-3 to the visiting Astros in ten innings last night.  The Dodgers lost to the lowly Marlins in Miami 11-9.  The one bright spot was Shohei Ohtani breaking his four-game home run drought in the third inning with #48 for this season.  He now has 48 homers and 48 stolen bases this season with 11 games left, giving him an excellent chance at becoming the first player ever to achieve a 50/50 in the regular season.  Colorado beat Arizona 8-2, so nothing changed in the NL West standings.  The Angels shut out the visiting White Sox 5-0.  That’s loss #116 this year for Chicago – four away from tying the 1963 Mets record for losses in a season.  All the series continue today.  The Pirates have joined the ranks of teams eliminated from playoff contention.  They’re in last place in the NL Central with a 71 and 80 record.

In the Minors – The Lake Elsinore Storm beat the Nuts in 9-2 in Game 2 of the league championship in Modesto last night.  That forces a deciding Game 3 there tonight.  https://www.milb.com/lake-elsinore/schedule/2024-09

In the NFL – Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has a right ankle injury, but says he’s feeling much better.  It’s too soon to say, but if Herbert isn’t up to playing Sunday, Easton Stick will get the start at QB.  Herbert’s injury happened in the third quarter Sunday against Carolina in a hit by DJ Johnson and Jayden Perry.  Herbert walked to the medical tent, but came right out and didn’t miss a snap.  He was walking with a limp after the game. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/41314630/chargers-justin-herbert-ankle-injury-feeling-better

Week 3 begins tomorrow with New England playing the Jets in East Rutherford on Prime Video.

In Soccer – LAFC hosts Austin and the Galaxy play at Portland tonight.

In Lacrosse – The San Diego Seals have done a lot in the first two weeks of free agency, picking up forwards Rob Hellyer from Las Vegas and former #1 pick Ben McIntosh from Philadelphia.  They also sent forward Jacob Dunbar to Ottawa for defenseman and former first-round pick Zach Deaken.  The Seals’ top pick in this year’s league draft was Trent DiCicco from Ohio State.  They got him by trading their first round pick next year to Georgia. (Seals media releases)

In local high school sports:

Bonsall – no scheduled games today

Great Oak – girls’ tennis hosting Santiago at 3:15p; girls’ volleyball at Vista Murrieta at 5p

Fallbrook – no scheduled games today

Valley Center – no scheduled games today

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up just slightly.  The Dow gained a small fraction.  The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were each up just under a tenth of a percent.  Gold gained $6, trading on the Comex at $2,598.40 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures were down 71 cents to $70.48 a barrel.

The Federal Reserve today slashed interest rates by a half point.  It’s the first rate cut since 2020 and signals the shift from the long fight against inflation to now protecting jobs.  The Fed has said inflation and job creation have come into balance.  Today’s rate cut and one or two more expected later this year are aimed at keeping it that way.   https://www.cnn.com/business/live-news/federal-reserve-interest-rate-09-18-24/index.html

Following approval by the US Department of Transportation, Alaska Airlines has completed its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines for $1.9b.  Key Hawaiian routes and other consumer protections will be maintained for six years following the management transition.  Alaska is the nation’s fifth-largest air carrier.  Hawaiian Air is the 10th.  A recent merger proposal between JetBlue and Spirit and one between American and JetBlue four years ago had been blocked by regulators. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/18/business/alaska-airlines-completes-acquisition-of-hawaiian/index.html

Hershey is now courting consumers on a fitness kick.  As the use of weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy ramps up, the 130-year old confectionary company is adjusting by pushing into the wellness category with energy drinks and protein powders in candy flavors.  The Hershey Company has struck a deal with C4 Energy.  Hershey’s namesake and Reese’s peanut butter and chocolate will soon be sold as protein powders.  Its Jolly Rancher candies will be carbonated energy drinks.  C4 is the fourth best-selling energy drink brand in the US behind Red Bull, Monster and Pepsi including its Rockstar brand. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/18/business/hersheys-c4-workout-collaboration/index.html

After years of fading popularity and financial troubles, Tupperware has filed for bankruptcy.  The maker of plastic storage containers gained market in the 1950s and 60s through direct marketing – so-called Tupperware parties, similar to the model created by Avon cosmetics.  They only began selling retail in Target stores two years ago.  Once a household name, Tupperware has lost market to cheaper competitors. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/18/business/tupperware-files-bankruptcy/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Bail was denied yesterday for music kingpin, Sean Combs.  He’d offered up to $50m and will appeal the judge’s denial this afternoon.  Prosecutors allege Combs created and ran a “criminal enterprise” through his business empire.  The federal indictment alleges, sex trafficking, forced labor, arson, bribery and obstruction of justice.  The 54-year old could get life in prison if convicted.  Because of this and his wealth, the judge yesterday considered him a flight risk and denied bail. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/18/entertainment/sean-diddy-combs-appeal-bail-denial-wednesday/index.html

The pager attack in Lebanon is raising questions about the safety of our own electronic devices.  At least 12 people were killed, including two children and about 2,800 were wounded yesterday when their pagers exploded.  A second wave of explosions happened early this morning, this time with walkie talkies, killing nine more and injuring another 300.  The coordinated attacks targeted members of the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group, Hezbollah.  CNN reported the attacks were coordinated by Israeli intelligence and military.  Israel has not commented.  The exact cause of the personal device explosions hasn’t been determined.  Tech experts think it was most likely due to hardware tampering rather than a cybersecurity breach that caused the lithium batteries to heat up and explode.  The coordinated and sophisticated nature of the attack indicates the pagers were most likely modified before shipping rather than being hacked.  They note that pagers which don’t rely on cell service are now little used in this country outside of healthcare.  They say your personal communications devices are not at risk unless heavily tampered with and laced with explosives. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/17/business/pagers-cell-phones-batteries/index.html

Today is National Cheeseburger Day.  As with many items sold at fast food restaurants, there are deals to be had today.  And like the others over the past year or two, all of them involved using the chain’s app.  McDonald’s is offering a double cheeseburger for 50 cents if ordered on their app. No additional purchase required.  Burger King is giving a free cheeseburger with a minimum $1 purchase.  Jack in the Box is throwing in a Jumbo Jack with a $1 purchase on its app.  Carl’s Jr. app has a half-price double cheeseburger.  Fast food burgers have become a flashpoint for elevated prices with casual dining chains like Applebee’s, Chili’s and Red Robin gaining customers who believe they’re getting more value there.  Deals like today’s cheeseburger promotions are critical for fast food chains to lure back customers. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/18/food/national-cheeseburger-day-deals-specials/index.html

On this day in music history – September 18,

  • 1968, The Beatles, working on new songs for what would become the “white album” recorded 20 takes of “Birthday”.  Band wives, Yoko Ono and Pattie Harrison contributed backing vocals and band roadie, Mal Evans added hand claps.
  • In 1970, Jimi Hendrix died in London after choking on his own vomit.  Earlier that night, he’d left a message for his manager saying, “I need help bad, man.”  Rumors flew about what happened.  Eric Burdon said it was suicide.  But others said Jimi was in a good frame of mind.  Some say it was the result of a government conspiracy involving his then-girlfriend, a German figure skater.  The most reasonable explanation seems to be that he’d had a lot of wine and took some of her sleeping pills.  Although they were a brand he was familiar with, he took a huge dose – nearly 20 times what a doctor would normally prescribe.  He was found unresponsive at about 10a the next day.  An autopsy concluded he’d died of asphyxiation around midnight.  Hendrix was 27.
  • In 1971, The Who scored their first #1 album with “Who’s Next”.
  • In 1976, one hit wonders Wild Cherry began the first of three weeks at #1 with “Play That Funky Music”.
  • In 1983, the members of KISS appeared without their makeup for the first time during an interview on MTV.
  • In 1991, lead singer for the MC5, Rob Tyner died of a heart attack sitting in his car in his hometown of Berkley, Michigan.  The Motor City Five formed in 1965 and released their first album, “Kick Out the Jams” in ’69.
  • In 1996, Julian Lennon successfully bid just over $39k for the recording notes of “Hey Jude”, the song Paul McCartney wrote for him.
  • In 2006, Willie Nelson and four members of his band were charged with drug possession when police in Lafayette, Louisiana found marijuana and magic mushrooms on his tour bus.
  • In 2007, Britney Spears’ management company dropped the singer one month after signing with them.

Born on this day …

  • In 1933, Jimmie Rodgers who had the #1 hit “Honeycomb” in 1957.
  • In 1939, teen idol Frankie Avalon.
  • In 1950, Doobie Brothers drummer Michael Hossack.
  • In 1952, Ramones bass player Dee Dee Ramone – real name Douglas Colvin.
