A false bomb threat caused the evacuation of eleven medical offices in Murrieta Tuesday morning.  Affected was the Rancho Springs Medical Center on Medical Center Drive.  The potential threat was received at about 10:15a.  A search uncovered no bomb.  The evacuation was lifted and rescheduling of dozens of medical appointments began. https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/lindsay-leahy-appointed-new-vc-municipal-water-district-general-manager/

Valley Center-Pauma Unified School District Superintendent Ron McCowan has announced he will retire at the end of December.  He’s been superintendent for the past eight years and had been assistant principal at Valley Center High when that school opened in 1997.  He was principal there for 13 years before becoming superintendent.  McCowan began his career in education as a biology teacher, football and head wrestling coach at Orange Glen High in 1992.  https://www.valleycenter.com/articles/ron-mccowan-announces-retirement-as-super/

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres beat the Mets 7-4 with Manny Machado hitting a tie-breaking grand slam home run in the top of the 5^th inning.  The Dodgers blanked the Phillies 5-0.  Blake Snell got the win.  The Giants and Diamondbacks entered the 10^th inning in a scoreless tie where Arizona closer John Curtis gave up three hits and four runs.  The D-backs only managed one run in the bottom half as the Giants closed the gap between them in the standing to a game and a half with the 4-1 win.  Milwaukee thumped the Angels 9-2.  The A’s were eliminated from the playoff race with a ten-inning 5-4 loss at Boston.

In the NFL – Week 3 begins with Miami at Buffalo tonight on Prime Video.

In college football – Week 4 begins tonight.  AP Top 25 team action begins Saturday morning with #16 Utah hosting #17 Texas Tech.

Kansas and Arizona State are in discussions about moving next season’s matchup between the two to Wembley Stadium in London.  The September 29 game would require schedule modifications for Kansas.  One of the reasons for Kansas wants to move the Arizona State game is that the Jayhawks’ stadium is scheduled for offseason construction and will have reduced capacity for the big game. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/46302483/sources-kansas-arizona-state-discussing-26-game-london

In the WNBA playoffs – Minnesota swept its best-of-three playoff series against Golden State with a 75-74 win last night.  The Phoenix-New York series is now tied at one after last night’s game.  Tonight, Indiana is at Atlanta and Seattle is at Las Vegas.  Both of those series are tied at one.

In hockey – The NHL preseason begins Saturday.

In Major League Soccer – Last night in Utah, LAFC beat Real Salt Lake 4-1.  They host Real Salt Lake on Sunday at BMO Stadium.  This Saturday, San Diego FC plays in Atlanta and the Galaxy host FC Cincinnati in Carson.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up.  The Dow gained 4 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up more than a half percent.  And the Nasdaq rose a full percent.  Gold was down $40 on the Comex, trading at $3,677.80 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell 69 cents to $63.36 an ounce.

Late yesterday afternoon, Disney-owned ABC suspended the Jimmy Kimmel Show “indefinitely” after getting government pushback over comments Kimmel made Monday about the Charlie Kirk assassination.  It began when the Nexstar chain of television stations, 32 of which are ABC affiliates said it would not carry Kimmel because of Monday’s comments in which the host said the “MAGA gang” was trying to characterize Kirk’s alleged killer as anything but one of them in order to score political points.  Just an hour or two before that, FCC chairman Brendan Carr, a recent Trump administration appointee, praised Nexstar to right-wing podcaster Benny Johnson and threatened to act against ABC and Disney over the comments.  ABC reacted with an immediate suspension of the Kimmel show.  Also figuring into yesterday’s scenario is Nexstar’s pending merger with the Tegna chain of television stations, which requires FCC approval.  A joint statement today from House Democratic leaders said FCC Chairman Carr had “engaged in the corrupt abuse of power” and called for his resignation.  Kimmel on his late-night talk show and President Trump in social media posts have waged a war of words for years.  Yesterday’s actions along with the CBS cancellation in July of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” are raising questions about the protection of free speech in the Trump era.  Trump had posted five days after Colbert’s cancellation that “Jimmy Kimmel is NEXT” and that Jimmy Fallon would follow.  https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c203n52x1y9o

On this day in music history – September 18,

• 1968, The Beatles, working on new songs for what would become the “white album” recorded 20 takes of “Birthday”.  Band wives, Yoko Ono and Pattie Harrison contributed backing vocals and band roadie, Mal Evans added hand claps. 
• In 1970, Jimi Hendrix died in London after choking on his own vomit.  Earlier that night, he’d left a message for his manager saying, “I need help bad, man.”  Rumors flew about what happened.  Eric Burdon said it was suicide.  But others said Jimi was in a good frame of mind.  Some say it was the result of a government conspiracy involving his then-girlfriend, a German figure skater.  The most reasonable explanation seems to be that he’d had a lot of wine and took some of her sleeping pills.  Although they were a brand he was familiar with, he took a huge dose – nearly 20 times what a doctor would normally prescribe.  He was found unresponsive at about 10a the next day.  An autopsy concluded he’d died of asphyxiation around midnight.  Hendrix was 27. 
• In 1971, The Who scored their first #1 album with “Who’s Next”. 
• In 1976, one hit wonders Wild Cherry began the first of three weeks at #1 with “Play That Funky Music”. 
• In 1983, the members of KISS appeared without their makeup for the first time during an interview on MTV. 
• In 1991, lead singer for the MC5, Rob Tyner died of a heart attack sitting in his car in his hometown of Berkley, Michigan.  The Motor City Five formed in 1965 and released their first album, “Kick Out the Jams” in ’69. 
• In 1996, Julian Lennon successfully bid just over $39k for the recording notes of “Hey Jude”, the song Paul McCartney wrote for him. 
• In 2006, Willie Nelson and four members of his band were charged with drug possession when police in Lafayette, Louisiana found marijuana and magic mushrooms on his tour bus. 
• In 2007, Britney Spears’ management company dropped the singer one month after signing with them.

ORDERS

• Masks are optional for all Pala tribal employees, vendors and other visitors except in designated high-risk departments.  Social distancing of 6 feet, hand sanitizing and other safety measures are still recommended.
• Californians, are no longer required to wear masks in most indoor public places.  It’s now only a recommendation.  Masks are now optional on public transportation, in airports and in taxis.  They’re still required in most hospitals and doctor’s offices.  Masks and other coverings don’t have to be hospital grade, but N95 is recommended.  Cotton fabric which can easily be washed and reused has proven to be less effective at preventing the spread of coronavirus.
• County Health advises that anyone who is sick with anything – diagnosed or not, stay home and not return to work until at least 3 days after they are fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medicines and at least 7 days after symptoms began.  They define fever as 100 degrees or more.
• Pala Administration no longer requires a negative test before returning to work after a Covid quarantine. The rules for Covid are now the same as for colds and flu – no return to work until symptom and fever-free for 48 hours.  But no test is necessary.

 

PANDEMIC SERVICES

• All enrolled American Indian and Alaskan Natives can request Non-Recurrent, Short-Term Benefits through the Southern California Tribal Chairmen’s Association’s TANF program.  Details at the SCTCA Tribal TANF web page.   https://sctca.net/tribal-tanf/
• Rite-Aid offers Covid-19 testing by appointment at no cost for anyone 18 or older even if they don’t have symptoms.  Results take three to five days.  Instant test results are available at some locations on certain days.  Regular testing Monday through Friday 10a to 8p and Saturdays and Sundays 10a to 5p at the Rite-Aids on South Mission in Fallbrook, Cole Grade Road in Valley Center and 1201 South Coast Highway in Oceanside.
• CVS Health has free drive-thru COVID-19 testing at select pharmacy locations nationwide.  You must meet CDC criteria as well as state and age guidelines.  Qualify yourself, find a location, and make the appointment online at www.CVS.com
• San Diego County has a list of free Covid-19 testing sites that it operates dawn to dusk
• County Behavioral Health also has resources for Taking Care of Your Family During Disease Outbreaks and Managing Your Mental Health during pandemic. 
• CBH’s number for the Access & Crisis Line to help manage stress and anxiety is 888 724 7240.  In San Diego County you can also call 211.
• Because air quality affects breathing which is a concern with COVID-19, Current local air quality by zip code from the EPA and SoCalAQMD is available at AirNow.

 

BUSINESS & FINANCE

• Here’s a list of resources for North County businesses from the San Diego North Economic Development Council.
• SDG&E is offering a bill discount program to help customers impacted by the pandemic.  A pair of plans with applications available online at SDGE.com could lower utility bills by 18 to 30% for those who’ve recently become unemployed or are receiving unemployment benefits.
• All DMV services are now online with increased grace periods for expiring licenses, IDs and vehicle registrations.  Not all commercial licenses have grace periods or can be completed fully online.

In an emergency, one of Pala Rez Radio^TM‘s resources for obtaining information is local amateur radio operators.  Even if you don’t have a Ham license you can monitor their frequencies:  Fallbrook repeater 146.175, Palomar repeater 146.730, RACES repeater 147.195, on any radio that receives the 2 meter band.  There are “smart phone” apps that do this too.
