LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

The nearly month-old Line Fire is once again causing evacuations in the San Bernardino mountains near Big Bear.  It has now burned almost 44k acres and containment has decreased to 76%.  Seven Oaks and Angelus Oaks are under mandatory evacuation orders.  Warnings to prepare for evacuation have been issued for parts of Boulder Bay and Big Bear Lake, including Moonridge, Sugarloaf, and south Erwin Lake.  Most of Highway 330 is closed.  So are parts of Highway 38.  Highway 18 is open for evacuees out of Big Bear on both sides.  Evacuation centers are Redlands East Valley High School and Apple Valley Conference Center.  Five structures have been confirmed damaged or destroyed.  There have been four injuries.  Smoke from the Line Fire will be impacting most of Southern California.  With a new heat wave beginning today, it’s worth noting that some of Southern California’s most devastating fires including some affecting North County have happened in October. https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2024/9/5/line-fire

A bill requiring California schools to implement guidelines for extreme weather was signed into law just over a week ago.  SB 1248 goes by the name of Yahushua’s Law in honor the 12-year old boy who died at Canyon Lake Middle School during a heatwave in August of 2023.  The coroner’s report said contributing factors to his death were a heart defect, heat and physical exertion.  The Temperature in Lake Elsinore around the time Yahushua collapsed was 96 degrees.  It peaked later that day at 107.  Local school districts and the state Department of Education must now develop protocols with expert advice for dealing with extreme weather.  The guidelines must consider research on climate change and weather patterns.  Some school districts including Temecula Valley already have plans for extremely hot days. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/09/30/bill-named-for-student-who-died-in-heat-near-lake-elsinore-is-signed-into-law

Take all the usual precautions for extreme heat over the next week or more.  Stay hydrated, avoid midday outdoor exertion, and wear light colored, loose-fitting clothes.  Check on elders and those without air-conditioning.  Go to a designated Cool Zone if you need to.  The San Diego County website has a list including all county libraries.  www.CapRiverside.org has a list for Riverside County.

Beginning October 7, the Fallbrook Public Library will be closed for just over two months to replace its “green roof” with solar panels.  The roof with sometimes-living plants has been problematic since the library was built.  A bookmobile will be in the parking lot to take up some of the slack from the main library closure. The community room is not affected by the work.  It will still be an election polling place.  But most events there have been cancelled. https://everythingfallbrook.org/2024/09/25/more-updates-on-the-library-closure/

San Dieguito Union High School District was ranked as the best in San Diego County and the third-best in California in Niche’s 2025 Best Schools and Districts rankings released this week.  Other schools making the Top 15 in San Diego County included Vista at #10, Bonsall at #12, Fallbrook at #13, Oceanside at #14, and Valley Center at #15.  The top five districts nationwide were all in Illinois and New York. https://patch.com/california/san-diego/these-are-best-school-districts-san-diego-county-ranking

Your SDG&E bill for this month will get a $78.22 discount and you don’t have to do anything to receive it.  The semi-annual California Climate Credit will be automatically applied to customer statements for October.  Funding for the credit comes from money generated by the state’s cap and trade program requiring power generators and large industries that emit greenhouse gasses to buy permits for the carbon pollution they produce.  The amount of the credits vary from year to year. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/10/01/youre-going-to-get-a-78-deduction-on-your-sdge-bill-this-month/

We’re beginning a double-whammy heatwave throughout Southern California today that’ll last at least a week.  Highs will be in triple digits tomorrow and then again both days this weekend.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

Mass at Pala Mission Church is broadcast live on Rez Radio 91.3 and streamed live on the Rez Radio App every Sunday at 8a.  It may not be possible to broadcast mass some weeks between now and November due to staffing issues.

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Mets and Braves split a double header of make good games yesterday.  The playoffs begin today with the Wild Card series.  The Astros host the Tigers.  That game is already underway.  The Orioles host the Royals, the Brewers host the Mets and the Padres host the Braves.

Pete Rose, baseball’s career hits leader and fallen idol who undermined his historic achievements and Hall of Fame dreams by gambling on the game he loved and once embodied, has died. He was 83.  He was found by a family member at his home in a suburb of Las Vegas.  No cause of death given, but it was apparently sudden.  He’d appeared at an autograph show in Nashville with three former teammates over the weekend. A 17-time All-Star, the switch-hitting Rose played on three World Series winners. He was the National League MVP in 1973 and World Series MVP two years later. He holds the major league record for games played (3,562) and plate appearances (15,890) and the NL record for the longest hitting streak (44).  He was permanently banned from Major League Baseball for having gambled on games. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/41538454/pete-rose-all-mlb-hits-leader-dies-83

In the NFL – Last night, Detroit beat Seattle 42-29 and Tennessee over the Dolphins in Miami 31-12.  Week 5 begins Thursday with Tampa Bay at Atlanta.

In college football – Almost everybody moved at least two places on the AP Top 25 this week.  Alabama jumped three places to #1 thanks to their upset of now-#5 Georgia.  Former #1 Texas is now #1.  Ohio State is the only Top 25 team to retain its ranking from last week (#3).  Ole Miss’s upset loss dropped it six places to #12. Utah’s upset loss to unranked Arizona dropped it 8 places to #18. https://www.espn.com/college-football/rankings

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down.  The Dow fell a quarter percent.  The S&P 500 was off by three quarters.  The Nasdaq dropped 1.4%.  Comex gold gained $24.10 an ounce to $2,683.50.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $2.36 to $70.53 a barrel.

In spite of today’s losses, the stock market is on track for its best yearly performance since 1997 when Bill Clinton was President.  At market close yesterday, the S&P 500 was up 20.8% for the year so far.  Growth has been fueled by growing hopes for a soft landing for the economy.  Don’t pop the champagne corks just yet.  October is a notoriously weak month and it’s beginning with a major strike, the Fed rushing to prevent unemployment from spiking, a tight race for the Presidency, and revved up fighting on two fronts in the Middle East. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/01/investing/stock-market-best-start-since-1997/index.html

The threatened dock workers’ strike began this morning at three dozen locations on the East and Gulf Coasts.  50k members of the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) walking off the job could become the most disruptive work stoppage in decades.  It’ll block the import of a wide variety of goods including bananas, European wine, beer and liquor, furniture, clothing, household goods, European-made vehicles, and critical parts for US factories.  It’ll also stop exports.  There’s still a wide gap in negations between the ILA and the US Maritime Alliance (USMX) which represents the major shipping lines, all of which are foreign owned, as well as US terminal operators and port authorities.  Disruption from a lengthy strike could once again heat up inflation. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/01/business/us-port-workers-strike-tuesday/index.html

CVS announced today it will lay off almost 3k workers in a move to cut costs.  That’s less than 1% of its total work force. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/01/business/cvs-health-layoffs/index.html

CNN is beginning to erect a paywall, asking visitors $3.99 a month for access to some of its news content.  The average customer, who only views a few articles a month won’t be required to subscribe at this point.  Certain content will only be available to paid subscribers.  Some of the movers and shakers behind this new plan at CNN used to work for the New York Times, which is widely envied in the news business for its success in converting online readers into paying subscribers. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/01/media/cnn-launch-digital-subscription-paywall/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The California DMV announced this week that written driver knowledge tests will no longer required for 70 and over driver renewals.  Agency officials noted that that the requirement was a policy and not a law.  Not requiring the test will eliminate time or entire trips to the DMV for thousands, helping with the DMV’s efforts to streamline office visits.  Drivers with poor driving records will still have to take the written test. https://www.cbsnews.com/sacramento/news/california-dmv-eliminates-written-renewal-test-drivers-70-and-older/

Millions of pounds of clothing end up in landfills every year.  SB 707, signed into law by Gov. Newsome on Saturday will require companies that make clothing, footwear and all textiles to set up the nation’s first mandatory take-back program for unwanted clothes.  Unwanted clothing donated to thrift stores which they can’t use often gets re-sold to companies that ship it in bulk to developing nations.  Some countries including Ghana and Chile now have literal mountains of clothes 50 feet high in deserts and alongside rivers, creating a huge garbage problem.  Other places, they end up incinerated, creating air pollution.  The new California law requires clothing and textile makers that sell in California to create a non-profit organization by 2026 that would set up free collection sites at thrift stores and create mail-back programs by 2030 to recycle used textiles. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/09/30/is-your-closet-full-of-old-clothes-a-new-california-law-will-require-the-fashion-industry-to-take-them-back-for-free/
