President Trump yesterday asked the Supreme Court for an emergency order to remove Lisa Cook from the Federal Reserve Board of Governors after an appeals court ruled she could keep her job in spite of Trump’s executive order firing her on the grounds of alleged mortgage fraud. Cook denied it. Bloomberg alleges that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent did the same thing Cook was accused of doing. No President has ever fired a Fed governor in the central bank’s 112-year history, because it was designed to be independent of partisan politics. www.morningbrew.com
Starbucks workers in Illinois, Colorado and California say the company broke the law when it changed its dress code but failed to reimburse those who had to buy new clothes. Workers in Illinois and Colorado are suing. Those in California have filed a complaint over the strictly enforced black-shirt under green apron dress code which went into effect in May. A CNBC investigation found that Walmart’s rapidly expanding online marketplace has come at a cost. In its zeal to compete with Amazon, Walmart allegedly lowered its vetting standards for third-party vendors. CNBC says it uncovered dozens of sellers on Walmart.com impersonating actual Walmart vendors and offering potentially dangerous counterfeit health and beauty products at steep discounts. Amazon and other online retailers have fought the battle of counterfeits and fraud among their third-party vendors, with Amazon eventually tightening its vetting. Meanwhile, one Walmart associate on the vendor-vetting team says at one point, they were under so much pressure from upper management to expand online offerings, they began taking chances and approving pretty much any and all applicants. In an official statement responding to the CNBC investigation, Walmart said, “trust and safety are non-negotiable for us.” https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/19/walmart-marketplace-fakes-scams-investigation.html

Cocaine use in the Western US is up 154% since 2019 in part due to the crackdown on fentanyl and resulting increase in cocaine production in Columbia. That, in turn has driven down prices. The current street price of $60 to $75 for a gram of cocaine is half what it was five years ago. A report by the United Nations confirms there has been a surge in cocaine use worldwide now that it’s such a bargain. The good news is, CDC is reporting fentanyl use in the US has been declining since 2023. www.morningbrew.com
