The California Department of Food and Agriculture has declared an additional quarantine on citrus fruit for North County, Camp Pendleton and parts of Orange County. Monitoring uncovered HLB, known as citrus greening disease in the area. This is in addition to the existing quarantines in Fallbrook, Oceanside, Rancho Bernardo and Valley Center. The quarantine is to protect the citrus industry. HLB isn’t harmful to people or animals, but it’s fatal to citrus trees. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/09/18/news/state-declares-new-citrus-quarantine/79905.html

A trial starts today to decide whether Amazon tricked customers into subscribing to Prime. The Federal Trade Commission maintains that in some cases, checkout buttons would complete a purchase and automatically sign up the customer for Prime without disclosure. Canceling Prime is an even bigger issue. Regulators say the process can take up to four pages and 15 steps, with an internal codename for the cancellation process allegedly called “Iliad”, named after the ancient Greek poem about the lengthy siege of Troy during the Trojan War. Amazon denies any wrongdoing. But last week, a preliminary judge ruled that Amazon had broken a federal law by collecting billing information before disclosing key payment terms. The outcome of today’s lawsuit could have far-reaching effects on how all subscription services operate. https://www.newsnationnow.com/business/your-money/amazon-prime-trial-ftc-deceptive-practices/
Michelob Ultra has overtaken Modelo Especial as the best-selling beer in the U.S. It was just two years ago that Modelo overtook Bud Light, which had been the top-seller for more than two decades. Grocery prices took their biggest jump in more than 3 years last month. They’re now up almost 30% in the past five years. For those on a tight budget, hunting for affordable food is becoming almost a full-time job. Some are switching to cheaper meals, which isn’t always healthy. Kroger supermarkets, which includes the Ralphs chain says the stress is obvious with shoppers making smaller, more frequent trips to the store, buying cheaper private labels, and using more coupons. The double-digit price increases came as a shock after decades of relatively stable prices. Many shoppers say they notice a difference in prices every time they go to the store. Tariffs have had their part in it. Coffee prices are up 20% in the past year and not all of that is due to weather in coffee-growing countries like Brazil and Vietnam. https://www.npr.org/2025/09/19/nx-s1-5539547/grocery-prices-tariffs-food-inflation

California has become the first state to ban most law enforcement officers from covering their faces while on the job. This includes federal immigration agents operating in the state. The new law is a direct response to recent immigration raids by masked ICE agents in Southern California and subsequent public protests over the practice. In signing the bill on Saturday, Gov. Newsom said the official pushback against masked agents without identification or badge numbers detaining people in the streets ensures accountability in a state where 27% of residents are foreign-born. A spokesperson for Homeland Security called the new law “despicable and a flagrant attempt to endanger our officers”. The agency further claims that agents’ concealed identity is necessary to protect them from doxing and being targeted by known and suspected terrorist sympathizers, and that Newsom’s rhetoric has contributed to a surge in assaults on agents. Newsom counters that no data has been provided to back such claims, only “misinformation and misdirection.” https://apnews.com/article/california-ice-agents-immigration-raids-masks-ban-97936f70699b75d8b483a850967c2e42?
Even though it became 50% more likely in the decade before Covid that you’d live to be 100, it’s still pretty rare. According to the last U.S. Census, there were just over 80k centenarians in the U.S. That was up from 53k in 2010 and the fastest-growing of all older adult age groups. But it’s still just 2 out of every 10k Americans. (U.S. Census Bureau media release)
