In Major League Baseball – The Padres beat the visiting Brewers 5-4 in 11 innings. Freddy Fermin singled in automatic runner Bryce Johnson for the walk-off win. Relief pitcher Bradgley Rodriguez got the win – his first of the season as the Padres clinched their fourth playoff berth in the past six seasons. The rest of the NL West had the day off. The Padres-Brewers series continues today. The Dodgers are at Arizona. San Francisco hosts St. Louis. And the Angels host Kansas City.
Major League Baseball’s competition committee yesterday approved the use of the Automated Ball/Strike system last seen at this year’s All-Star Game for use in regular season games next year. Human umpires will still call balls and strikes. But teams can challenge two calls per game with an extra appeal in extra innings. Only a pitcher, catcher or batter can make the challenge, which the team retains if it is successful. Reviews will be shown as digital graphics on outfield videoboards. The adoption of this challenge system is expected to cut down on player and coach ejections, over 60% of which involve pitch call disputes. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46357017/mlb-approves-robot-umpires-2026-part-challenge-system

H-1B work visas are the latest thing to come under attack from the White House. The H-1B program was created in 1990 to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations including engineering and medical research for three to six years, and only after efforts have been made to fill those jobs with American workers. The program offers 65k visas annually and another 20k for workers with advanced degrees. The fees for those visas was typically $2k to $5k depending on the size of the company and other factors. On Friday, President Trump imposed an additional $100k fee on H-1B visas and barred the workers from entering the U.S. until the employer pays it. The issue will now go to court since federal law only allows Immigration Services, which processes visas to collect fees in an amount necessary to cover costs of administering the program. Because that fee structure was authorized by Congress, it is the opinion of legal scholars that the President does not have the power to separately impose additional fees, especially when their intent appears to be economic and not a national security emergency. https://www.reuters.com/legal/government/can-trumps-100000-fee-h-1b-visas-withstand-legal-challenges-2025-09-23/

The investment firm is partnering with startup, Zerohash, in which Morgan Stanley now has an investment stake, for liquidity, custody and settlement in crypto trading. Although Jimmy Kimmel and his network, Disney-owned ABC have agreed on terms for Kimmel’s late-night talk show to return to the air tonight, Nexstar and Sinclair, the two television chains who started the show suspension furor over comments Kimmel made about MAGA on his September 15 show plan to boycott tonight’s broadcast. Together, the two companies own 20% of all ABC affiliate stations. Nexstar is currently seeking to merge with another television chain, Tegna, whose stations include KFMB, Channel 8 in San Diego. Nexstar already owns KTLA, Channel 5 in Los Angeles. That deal requires FCC approval. The Kimmel show was suspended last Tuesday after ABC received threats from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr. Sinclair has also been exploring a major transaction and is lobbying for ownership limit changes to allow it. While the battle over Kimmel appears to be over for now, larger issues are still unresolved. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/sinclair-preempt-jimmy-kimmel-live-return-abc-1236377475/
The Trump administration, as expected yesterday claimed an unproven link between autism and the use of acetaminophen by pregnant women. That drug is the active ingredient in one of the world’s most common over-the-counter pain relievers, Tylenol. Trump said the FDA will issue a physician’s notice about the risk of patients using acetaminophen during pregnancy unless they have a fever. The bulk of scientific literature says there is no link between autism and exposure to acetaminophen in the womb. Stock in Kenvue, the maker of Tylenol plunged about 17% on the news. It has since regained about half the loss. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/22/trump-autism-tylenol-acetaminophen-pregnancy.html
