LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
A single-engine Cessna airplane crashed on South Mission Road near Fallbrook Air Park just after 2p yesterday, sparking a small brush fire in the highway median then rolling into Los Jilgueros Preserve east of the road. Both lanes of South Mission were closed due to debris and recovery of the plane. Witnesses say the Cessna 182-N had been flying low and clipped trees before it went down. The pilot got out safely before first responders arrived. He sustained minor injuries but refused treatment. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/09/18/news/cessna-crash-sparks-brush-fire-shuts-down-south-mission-road-in-fallbrook/79930.html

SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – The Padres’ Randy Vasquez pitched 7 innings of one-hit ball as San Diego shut out first-place Milwaukee 7-0. First baseman Ryan O’Hearn got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a grand slam homer that also scored Arraez, Sheets and Laureano. Luis Arraez had his own two-run homer the next inning. The final score was a solo homer by third baseman Jose Iglesias in the 8th. Meanwhile, the Dodgers’ magic number to clinch the NL West remains at 3 with five games left in the regular season as their bullpen once again failed to hold a lead. They lost to the Diamondbacks 5-4 thanks to a walk-off RBI single by shortstop Geraldo Perdomo. St. Louis edged San Francisco 9-8. The visiting Royals beat the Angels 8-4. All those series continue today.
Cleveland and Detroit are tied for first in the AL Central with neither having yet clinched a spot in the playoffs. Detroit is riding a 7-game losing streak after losing to the Guardians 5-2 last night. Guardians designated hitter David Fry was hospitalized with a broken nose and facial fractures after being hit in the face by a pitch from Detroit’s Tarik Skubal in the 6th inning. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46366835/guardians-david-fry-broken-nose-facial-fractures-hbp
In the NFL – Week 4 begins tomorrow with Seattle at Arizona on Prime Video.
If current trends in NFL football continue, the metaphor “drop back and punt” may fade from popular use. NFL teams are punting just 3 2/3 times per game this season. That’s an all-time low. The reasons include new kickoff rules that start the offense with better field position, coaches increasingly willing to go for it on fourth down, and field goal kickers becoming increasingly successful at longer distances. In other words, punt specialist may soon be synonymous with bench warmer. www.morningbrew.com
In college football – Oklahoma State has fired head coach Mike Gundy after 21 seasons following this year’s 1 and 2 start. They lost to Tulsa 19-12 last week. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/46360295/oklahoma-state-ad-chad-weiberg-says-mike-gundy-firing-best-interest-moving-football-program-forward
In the NBA – The preseason begins a week from tomorrow on October 2.
In the WNBA playoffs – Last night, both semi-final series became tied at a game apiece. Phoenix beat Minnesota 89-83 in overtime and Las Vegas routed Indiana 90-68. Game 3 in both series will be Friday. Game 4 – Sunday. https://www.espn.com/wnba/schedule/_/date/20250923
In hockey – Last night’s preseason game winners were Detroit, Buffalo, New Jersey, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary, Los Angeles, and in overtime, Boston, Ottawa, and Dallas. Tampa Bay won a shootout over Nashville. Five games tonight including the Ducks hosting the Kings in Anaheim. https://www.espn.com/nhl/schedule/_/date/20250923

Hiring for the upcoming holiday season is expected to be at its lowest level since the 2009 recession. By this time last year, major companies including Target, Burlington, Aldi and others had already announced the number of seasonal workers they planned to hire. So far this year, none have released those numbers, which are considered to be an indicator of how strong or weak retailers expect the holiday shopping season to be. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/24/seasonal-hiring-2025-to-fall-to-lowest-level-since-2009-recession.html
New home sales rose an unexpectedly high 20% in August. That’s the biggest month-to-month change in three years. The median price of a new home in the U.S. last month was $413,500. That’s 1.9% higher than one year prior. Mortgage rates in August were about a quarter point higher than they are today. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/24/august-new-home-sales-soar.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING
The Jimmy Kimmel Show returned to ABC’s lineup last night after being suspended for a week over comments by Kimmel about MAGA and Charlie Kirk’s murderer on September 15 led to pressure from FCC chairman Brendan Carr and two station owner groups. The two groups, Nexstar and Sinclair, which together control 20% of all ABC affiliates boycotted last night’s broadcast. President Trump posted on Truth Social that he would “test ABC out” for allowing the show to return, writing, “Last time I went after them, they gave me $16 Million Dollars. This one sounds even more lucrative.” Trump was referring to the out of court settlement of a defamation suit he’d filed against ABC for comments made by the network’s George Stephanopoulos that Trump had been found liable for rape, when in fact it was technically sexual assault. Even though Trump would have had to prove malice, ABC chose settlement rather than an expensive, lengthy trial. www.morningbrew.com https://www.law.com/njlawjournal/2025/01/24/abcs-16m-settlement-with-trump-sets-bad-precedent-in-uncertain-times/?slreturn=20250924132407
Claudia Cardinale, one of Italy’s most well-known actresses in the early 1960s who gained fame in this county with roles in “The Pink Panther” and “Once Upon a Time in the West”, died yesterday in France. She may be best-known for co-starring along with Marcello Mastroianni in Federico Fellini’s “8 ½” in 1963. The daughter of Sicilian parents, Cardinale began her movie career at age 17 after winning a beauty contest in Tunisia where she was born and raised. Until then, she’d thought she’d become a school teacher. Following on the heels of Sophia Loren’s success, she was touted as Italy’s answer to Brigitte Bardot. Cardinale considered the 1966 film “The Professionals” in which she co-starred alongside Burt Lancaster, Jack Palance, Robert Ryan and Lee Marvin as her best Hollywood film. In 2000, she was named a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization for the defense of women’s rights. Claudia Cardinale was 87. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2025/sep/24/claudia-cardinale-obituary

- In 1962, Elvis received an invitation to appear at the Royal Variety Performance before members of the British Royal Family.
