There was a police presence yesterday at Guajome Park Academy in Vista investigating a potential threat to the private school on Tuesday. Detectives identified a juvenile student related to the threats. A search of both the student’s residence and the school uncovered no weapons. It was determined the threat was unfounded. https://patch.com/california/oceanside-camppendleton/possible-threat-against-north-county-charter-school-proven
An appeal to the Vista city council to overturn the Vista Planning Commission approval of a single family residential development along Monte Vista Drive was denied this week. The California West Communities project of 19 two-story homes – 16 of them with attached accessory dwelling units on 6 ½ acres east of Monte Vista Elementary School can once again proceed. The project was granted a density bonus thanks to the inclusion of two deed-restricted affordable units. A group of neighboring residents had appealed the Planning Commission’s approval of permits in June. On Tuesday, the city council agreed with staff reports that the project met all requirements for traffic and environmental studies as well as fire safety and denied the appeal to block the project. https://thecoastnews.com/vista-council-denies-appeal-of-monte-vista-homes-project/
The city of Escondido swore in its new police chief at the September 17 city council meeting. Ken Plunkett was chosen after a year-long search to replace retired chief Edward Varso. The Rez Radio news department and all tribal offices in Pala will be closed tomorrow in observance of Native American Day, which is celebrated in California and Nevada on the fourth Friday each September as a time to reflect on and learn more about indigenous culture. It’s been an official state holiday since 1998. With the adoption of Assembly Bill 855 in 2021, it has also been a judicial holiday in California. Though courts are closed, schools, most businesses and other government offices will operate as usual tomorrow. Several other states including Alaska, Oregon and Vermont have Native American Day as an official holiday. Many others recognize it through proclamation. South Dakota and Wisconsin have Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the second Monday of October in place of Columbus Day. https://www.google.com/search?q=native+american+day+california&rlz=1C1GCEA_enUS952US952&oq=native+american+day+california&gs_lcrp=EgZjaHJvbWUyDggAEEUYORhGGPsBGIAEMggIARAAGBYYHjIICAIQABgWGB4yCAgDEAAYFhgeMggIBBAAGBYYHjIICAUQABgWGB4yCAgGEAAYFhgeMggIBxAAGBYYHjIICAgQABgWGB4yCAgJEAAYFhge0gEINTIzOGowajeoAgiwAgHxBbE_ZVPmmJIn8QWxP2VT5piSJw&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

The 9-2 victory clinched a fourth AL West title for the Mariners, and their first since 2001. https://apnews.com/article/cal-raleigh-home-run-mariners-2f9405b191442e8e8aaface1b42f787e

The U.S. economy’s second quarter comeback was just revised higher again. Gross domestic product was up an annualized 3.8% from April through June, according to numbers released by the Commerce Department today. That’s the second upward revision from the initially-reported 3%. Analysts say that difference is “outside the norm”. Bottom line – imports fell and consumers kept spending following a correction at the beginning of the year when importers stocked up to beat the implementation of tariffs. More comprehensive August consumer spending data will be released tomorrow. https://www.cnn.com/2025/09/25/economy/us-gdp-q2-final
The federal government is projected to run out of operating cash in five days, yet the House and Senate aren’t even meeting this week. Republicans want the government funded at current levels though late November with no policy changes to health care. Democrats oppose that strategy over concerns that insurance premiums could rise as subsidies for the Affordable Care Act expire. While programs including Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid would continue uninterrupted after September 30, other federal offices could close and some services could be halted. The biggest problem is federal employees won’t be paid. The first missed paycheck will occur on October 10, if a budget agreement isn’t reached before then. While by law, employees would get back pay once the government reopens, government contractors would not. https://www.10news.com/politics/this-is-what-happens-if-the-government-shuts-down
President Trump is set to sign an executive order regarding TikTok today. But sources say the deal isn’t complete. The new investors include Oracle and the private equity firm, Silverlake. The federal government will not have a stake or a seat on the new board. A White House official said it was a compromise that met both U.S. and Chinese law. https://www.npr.org/2025/09/22/nx-s1-5550152/tiktok-deal-joint-venture
Starbucks plans to cut 900 corporate jobs and close about 1% – which is about 200 of its stores by the end of the fiscal year. The job cuts are on top of the 1,100 eliminated in February. The chain plans to invest in some new stores and renovate about 1k existing locations. https://www.npr.org/2025/09/25/nx-s1-5553386/starbucks-closes-stores-cuts-900-jobs

When the President says Jimmy Kimmel has bad ratings, he’s obviously not talking about Tuesday night. On a typical night, the Jimmy Kimmel Show gets about 1.6m viewers. On Tuesday’s return after being suspended for a week, it got 6.3m, making it the highest-rated regularly scheduled episode in over a decade and third-highest rated ever. And that’s with the 20% of ABC affiliates owned by Nexstar and Sinclair boycotting the show. Senators from four states wrote a 7-page letter to the heads of Nexstar and Sinclair on Tuesday in which they suggested that by bowing to President Trump’s wishes to censor a critic, they are not only complicit in “an alarming trampling of free speech rights but also risk running afoul of federal law.” From a business standpoint, the two television chains could find themselves losing all of their ABC programming if the network decides not to renew contracts with the 70 or so stations currently boycotting Kimmel when those contracts come up for renewal next year. https://www.10news.com/politics/congress/democrats-press-tv-station-owners-over-decision-not-to-air-jimmy-kimmels-late-night-show https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/national-international/jimmy-kimmel-highest-ratings-over-decade-post-suspension-episode/3905909/
Jimmy Kimmel’s 28-minute monolog Tuesday night garnered more than 26m views on YouTube, making it the most-watched monolog ever on the platform. It’s possible that Tuesday’s numbers were due in part to viewers from markets where the show was boycotted by the local ABC affiliate. As of yesterday, both Nexstar and Sinclair seemed to indicate they’re open to returning the Jimmy Kimmel Show to their stations’ lineups. https://variety.com/2025/tv/news/jimmy-kimmel-return-youtube-record-views-1236528127/

ORDERS
- Masks are optional for all Pala tribal employees, vendors and other visitors except in designated high-risk departments. Social distancing of 6 feet, hand sanitizing and other safety measures are still recommended.
- Californians, are no longer required to wear masks in most indoor public places. It’s now only a recommendation. Masks are now optional on public transportation, in airports and in taxis. They’re still required in most hospitals and doctor’s offices. Masks and other coverings don’t have to be hospital grade, but N95 is recommended. Cotton fabric which can easily be washed and reused has proven to be less effective at preventing the spread of coronavirus.
- County Health advises that anyone who is sick with anything – diagnosed or not, stay home and not return to work until at least 3 days after they are fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medicines and at least 7 days after symptoms began. They define fever as 100 degrees or more.
- Pala Administration no longer requires a negative test before returning to work after a Covid quarantine. The rules for Covid are now the same as for colds and flu – no return to work until symptom and fever-free for 48 hours. But no test is necessary.
