LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

An 80-year old woman was killed in a rollover crash in San Marcos early yesterday morning.  The woman was driving alone in the 500 block of San Marcos Blvd just after 3a when for reasons still under investigation, her car rolled over.  First responders found her dead. There are no known witnesses and it’s not known if drugs or alcohol were a factor.  https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/4263948045877-elderly-driver-killed-in-san-marcos-rollover-crash

A house fire in Escondido claimed the life of a man over the weekend.  It happened about 4p Saturday in the 600 block of S. Upas Street.  First responders found the body inside.  Arson investigators are still working to determine the cause.  https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/man-killed-in-escondido-house-fire

The Harmony Grove Village South development with 453 homes is headed to the San Diego County Board of Supervisors for approval.  Neighbors of the project west of Escondido oppose it over impact to evacuation routes.  This is the area that was severely impacted by the 2014 Coco fire.  There would only be one way in or out of Harmony Grove Village South.  The developer, who’s been working on the project for seven years, calls opposition complaints “scare tactics.”. https://www.cbs8.com/article/news/local/controversial-housing-development-in-harmony-grove-heads-to-county-supervisors/509-756091b0-77f7-47ad-a762-f678fc27aac1

Voter pamphlets are arriving in the mailboxes of registered voters all this week.  That’s about 2m San Diego County residents.  Among the issues on the November 4 ballot is Proposition 50, a state constitutional amendment that would allow for temporary changes to congressional district maps in response to partisan redistricting going on in Texas.  At last week’s Temecula city council meeting, a 4-1 majority of the councilmembers voted to oppose the Gov. Newsom-supported ballot measure, which would increase the odds of California Democrats gaining five seats in the House of Representatives to offset the Republican gerrymandering in Texas.  https://patch.com/california/temecula/temecula-city-council-majority-votes-oppose-prop-50

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down over the likely prospect of a government shutdown tonight at midnight.   The Dow and Nasdaq were each down a third of a percent.  The S&P 500 was down a quarter percent.  Gold gained $21.10 $3,876.30 an ounce – another new high.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell 85 cents to $62.60 a barrel.

Without an agreement from Congress today, the federal government begins shutting down some departments and services, and furloughing workers tomorrow.  While typically a non-event, the shutdown this time could be different.  President Trump has threatened to make some government shutdown furloughs permanent, potentially leaving a long-lasting impact if that action is upheld in the inevitable court cases that would follow.  And if the shutdown lasts any significant length, it could delay the release of key economic data since the Labor Department said Friday it would cease virtually all activity.  That would impact Social Security cost-of-living increases and interest rate decisions by the Federal Reserve, which relies on Bureau of Labor Statistics data in setting monetary policy.   Government shutdowns usually have little economic impact. This time could be different

The President has announced an agreement with Pfizer to voluntarily sell medications at lower prices in the U.S.  The pharma company will sell existing drugs to Medicare patients at the lowest price offered in other developed nations.  Additionally, Pfizer will enjoy a three-year grace period from tariffs as long as they invest further in U.S. manufacturing. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/30/trump-pfizer-drug-price-agreement.html

YouTube has agreed to pay $24.5m to settle a lawsuit filed by the President after he was suspended from the social media platform following the January 6, 2021 insurrection.  YouTube is the last of the three major social media companies sued by Trump to settle.  The others were Meta and the former Twitter – now X.  https://www.cnn.com/2025/09/29/business/youtube-settle-trump-lawsuit

Ford CEO Jim Farley says he expects demand for all-electric vehicles will decline by half next month.  He says the industry has learned that “partial electrification” such as hybrids, are easier for customers to accept for now.  Farley says he thinks electric vehicles will remain a vibrant industry, but way smaller than once thought.  He wouldn’t be surprised if sales fell from the current market share of 10 to 12%, down to 5% once the incentives end.  He believes the mass market just isn’t interested in $75k electric vehicles.  https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/30/ford-ceo-jim-farley-ev-incentives.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The Food and Drug Administration has recalled certain past products after a listeria contamination led to nineteen hospitalizations and four deaths nationwide since mid-year.  Stores affected include Walmart, Trader Joe’s, and Albertsons.  Albertson’s issued a voluntary recall on Saturday for five store-made deli pasta items containing bowtie pasta supplied by Fresh Creative Foods.  That company, a division of Reser’s Fine Foods had previously initiated a recall.  Consumers should not consume and dispose of items made with bowtie pasta at Albertsons.  https://patch.com/california/temecula/deadly-listeria-outbreak-prompts-pasta-product-recalls-california

The EV tax credit expires today.  So do the stickers that get your EV or hydrogen powered car free access to the HOV lanes on California freeways.  Federal approval is required to extend the California Clean Air Vehicle decal program.  That extension has not been granted.  Beginning tomorrow, EVs will use the HOV and toll lanes like any other vehicle and get the same discounts if there are enough people on board.  Single drivers of EVs will pay the same tolls as the gasoline and diesel counterparts.  They will no longer be allowed to use free HOV lanes. https://www.cbsnews.com/sanfrancisco/news/california-clean-air-vehicle-carpool-sticker-program-september-2025-end/

With traditional soft drinks, or as they’re called in other parts of the county – soda pop declining in popularity, there’s a variation that’s gaining followers.  The term “dirty soda” was coined in 2010 by Utah-based drink company Swig.  Dirty sodas use soda pop as a base and add syrup, cream or other ingredients.  TikTok videos and the reality show “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” have helped popularize dirty sodas to the point you can find them in most grocery stores and a lot of fast food chains.  Pepsi is preparing to introduce Dirty Dew and Mug Floats Vanilla Howler at a Chicago trade show in a couple of weeks.  Pepsi Wild Cherry & Cream has been on store shelves for several months.  TGI Fridays launched dirty soda with optional alcohol spikes over the summer.  McDonald’s is testing Sprite Lunar Splash at 500 locations.  Taco Bell has been offering limited time drinks including a dirty Mountain Dew Baja Blast.  Traditional soda consumption has been on the decline in the U.S. since 2004.  But dirty sodas and prebiotic sodas like Poppi are leveling off and even reversing the trend. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/09/27/dirty-soda-swig-taco-bell-pepsico.html
