LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Oceanside Police have increased patrols in parts of the city frequented by the homeless as a result of three recent assaults – two of which were fatal.  The fatalities were discovered Sunday in the San Luis Rey riverbed west of I-5 and Saturday along train tracks near Oceanside Boulevard and South Coast Highway.  Both had suffered blunt force injuries.  The third, non-fatal assault was a stabbing on September 18 near the location of Sunday’s incident.  Authorities have yet to identify any assailants or determine if the crimes are related. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/attacks-on-the-homeless-in-oceanside-leave-two-dead-one-wounded

A 41-year-old man suspected of child endangerment while possessing and allegedly transporting “magic mushrooms” in Fallbrook and Bonsall was taken into custody Friday when Investigators executed search warrants around 9 a.m. at a business in the 200 block of West Ash Street in Fallbrook and at a residence in the 1600 block of West Lilac Road in Bonsall.  The San Diego Sheriff’s office made the announcement Monday, saying the raids were the result of an ongoing investigation. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/man-suspected-in-north-county-drug-operation-arrested

This week’s wildfire near Campo was completely contained yesterday at 413 acres.  It began about 2:30p Monday near the intersection of La Posta Road and Old Highway 80 just south of I-8, about five miles west of Golden Acord Casino.  Full containment was achieved just after 6p last evening.  No injuries and no reports of structural damage.  https://patch.com/california/san-diego/campo-wildfire-fully-contained

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Padres are a win away from advancing to the NL pennant series. They lead the Dodgers two games to one going into tonight’s Game Four at Petco Park as a result of last night’s 6-5 win.  All six Padres runs came in the bottom of the second inning, including a two-run homer by Fernando Tatis Jr.  The Dodgers answered back with four runs in the top of the 3rd.  Padres pitching shut them down after that.  Michael King got the win, throwing five innings.  Robert Suarez got the save.  Tonight’s starting pitcher will be Dylan Cease for San Diego.  LA hasn’t named their starter yet.   If the Padres lose tonight, the series will be decided Friday in LA. In the NL East, the Mets beat the Phillies in New York 7-2, taking a two games to one lead in that series.  Game Four is tonight along with Games Three for both AL divisional series.  They’re both tied at a game apiece.

The last building from the mob era in Las Vegas has given way for the construction of the newest building in the professional sports era for Sin City.  At 2:30 this morning, the third-oldest casino on the Strip, the Tropicana was imploded to clear land that will become the new $1.5b baseball stadium home of the former Oakland A’s.  In true Vegas style, the 22-second implosion was turned into a spectacle.  That’s became a local tradition ever since casino mogul Steve Wynn took down the Dunes on live TV in 1993, making it look like pirate ships from his casino across the street were firing on it.  The Dunes stood where the Bellagio is now. www.morningbrew.com

In the NFL – Week 6 begins tomorrow with San Francisco at Seattle on Prime Video.

In college football – Georgia wide receiver Colbie Young has been suspended indefinitely following an arrest early yesterday on charges of misdemeanor battery and assault on an unborn child.  The team isn’t making any further comment.  Young is at least the eighth Georgia football player arrested this year.  Three of them pleaded down or had driving-related charges reduced. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/41700302/georgia-receiver-colbie-young-suspended-arrest

In the NBA preseason – Last night’s winners were Charlotte, Chicago, Phoenix, Atlanta and the Clippers over Brooklyn 115-106.  Four games tonight.

In Soccer – LAFC will play at Vancouver this Sunday.

In a court filing last night, the US Department of Justice said it may recommend dismantling Google’s core businesses, separating the Google search engine from Android, Chrome and the Google Play app store.  The filing said this would prevent Google from using the various products and features of each division in preference over rivals or new entrants.  It’s the first time the DOJ has made such a recommendation since AT&T was broken up into the so-called Baby Bells more than 40 years ago.  A federal judge ruling in August saying Google was in violation of anti-trust law set the stage for the proposed changes.  Google has responded with a blog post calling the plan “radical” and saying that it would make the customer experience worse, “break” Android and Chrome, hamper AI innovation, and force additional sharing of personal information, undermining user privacy.  The company summarized, saying there would be unintended consequences for consumers, businesses, and American competitiveness. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/09/tech/us-government-considers-a-breakup-of-google/index.html

About 10m pounds of meat and poultry is being recalled by an Oklahoma company due to possible contamination with listeria.  The products were produced between June 19 and October 8 by BrucePac and shipped nationwide for distribution to restaurants and institutions. The affected products bear the codes 51205 or P-51205 inside or under the USDA mark of inspection.  No illness or adverse reactions have yet been reported.  https://patch.com/us/across-america/10m-pounds-poultry-recalled-amid-listeria-concerns

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Melinda French Gates today announced a new $250m fund to improve women’s mental and physical health.  Action for Women’s Health was launched through her philanthropic organization, Pivotal Ventures.  It’s part of a $1b plan to promote women’s rights. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/09/business/melinda-french-gates-womens-health-fund/index.html

New technology is set to overcome the “last mile” problem for high-speed communications.  The critical last leg for access to broadband ranging from a few hundred feet to several miles is often too expensive or too difficult to build.  The problem is greatest in rural and remote areas.  “Free space optics” which use lasers to transfer data through the air are a possible solution.  FSO was pioneered by NASA in the 1960s.  But it’s always faced an unavoidable obstacle here on Earth … weather.  Fog, rain and even simple air turbulence can disrupt the signal.  Virginia-based Attochron say’s it’s ready to launch a commercial version after 20 years of development.  Its short bursts of laser light, rather than a steady beam are said to be the solution to the strict, unimpeded line-of-sight problem.  Attochron hardware is considerably cheaper than fiber optics cables – $30k for a 10 Gigabit link on something like a cell tower, compared to six to seven figures for dedicated fiber cable, which also requires lengthy right of way and permitting negotiations.  Even at $30k, it’s suitable only for businesses.  So, Attochron will sell links to broadband providers and carriers who will install them and charge a monthly fee to businesses. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/09/tech/lasers-fso-internet-attochron-spc/index.html

Hoping to revive sales of the brand, PepsiCo is giving “Mtn Dew” a makeover and putting the word “mountain” back on cans and bottles of the various flavors and versions of the soft drink.  It had changed the word to an abbreviation two decades ago when it began trying to appeal to the energy drink crowd.  Demand for Pepsi’s carbonated beverages in North American has been slowing across the board, but there’s been a sharper decline in volume for Mountain Dew – down 7% in the first half of 2024, according to the trade publication Beverage Digest.  The new, fully spelled-out Mountain Dew logo will include a nod to the drink’s creation in 1948 as a mixer in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/09/food/mountain-dew-new-logo-packaging/index.html
