LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A classmate was arrested in connection with a stabbing at Mission Hills High School in San Marcos yesterday.  San Diego Sheriffs received a call from a person who claimed to have been stabbed at the school just after classes for the day ended.  When deputies arrived on campus, a school resource deputy found the victim on school grounds.  The school was placed on lockdown around 3:40p.   The victim was taken to the nurse’s office for treatment before he was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. He is expected to survive, sheriff’s officials said.  A suspect was arrested at his home a short time later, according to officials, allowing the school lockdown to be lifted. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/student-arrested-in-stabbing-of-classmate-at-mission-hills-high-school-in-san-marcos

Registered nurses and caregivers at Palomar Health signed in and began picketing this morning.  Their protest raised concerns about staffing shortages at the hospital and patient safety.  Contracts for Palomar Union Workers United expired July 31, 2024, and had been extended through the end of September. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/palomar-health-nurses-other-workers-picket-for-patient-safety-and-more-staffing

A Lake Elsinore man was sentenced Monday to 23 years in prison for setting a fire at the Target store on Haun Road in Menifee in January 2023, causing almost $12m damage.  Abel Arizmendi Jr., who is a convicted felon, pleaded guilty to two arson-related charges and a third count of committing a crime with a previous strike on his record.  Investigators arrested Arizmendi eight days later.  His prior conviction was for assault with a deadly weapon, auto theft and felony evasion. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/10/08/man-who-set-fire-at-target-store-in-menifee-gets-23-years-in-prison/

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Dodgers pulled off their biggest post-season victory ever, shutting out the Padres 8-0 in Game Four of the NLDS.  Mookie Betts homered for the second straight night and Shohei Ohtani hit an RBI single that chased Padres starting pitcher Dylan Cease from the mound after less than two innings.  Will Smith and Gavin Lux each hit two-run homers as LA avoided losing their third straight game to San Diego.  The Dodgers changed pitchers seven times to quite San Diego offense. The series will be decided Friday night at Dodger Stadium where tempers flared and fans nearly caused a forfeit in Game 2 Sunday.  https://www.espn.com/mlb/recap/_/gameId/401701029

The winner of tomorrow’s game in LA will have home field advantage in the National League Championship series against the Mets, who won their Divisional Series against Philadelphia last night.  Francisco Lindor hit a grand slam in the 6th inning to take the lead away from the visiting Phillies.  The Mets won 4-1, taking the series three games to one.  In the American League, Detroit shut out the visiting Guardians and now lead that series two games to one.  The Yankees edged Kansas City 3-2 to take a two-games to one lead.  Cleveland is at Detroit today at 3p and the Yankees at Kansas City at 5p.

The Tampa Bay Rays didn’t make the playoffs.  If they did, they’d have a problem – no place to play.  Hurricane Milton ripped the roof off their home field, Tropicana Stadium yesterday.  Most of the 6 acres of Teflon-coated Fiberglass roof is gone.  Only a few staffers were in the building at the time.  Everyone’s OK.  They’ll begin assessing the damage today.  Elsewhere in Florida, four people have died and between two and three million people were without power overnight due to the storm. https://www.tampabay.com/hurricane/2024/10/10/rays-start-assessing-damage-viability-tropicana-field/

The Minnesota Twins announced today that they are for sale.  The Pohlad family has owned the Twins for 40 years, purchasing the franchise in 1984 for $44m.  It’s currently estimated to be worth between $1.5b and $2b.  The most recent MLB sale – the Orioles, was right in the middle of that range.  Only the Yankees, White Sox and Phillies have had the same owner longer than the Twins.  https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/41718735/twins-estimated-worth-15-2-billion-put-sale

In the NFL – Week 6 begins tonight with San Francisco at Seattle on Prime Video.

In college football – The NCAA Division I Council has approved eliminating the national letter of intent program.  Established 60 years ago, the program has been a formal, binding agreement between prospective athletes and college programs.  It’ll be replaced by a new financial aid agreement that will pave the way to implement the House settlement, granting $2.8b in damages to former and current college athletes and clearing the way for schools to begin paying athletes as soon as this fall.  The NLI program lost some of its teeth when the overseeing entity approved policy changes allowing athletes to pull out of agreements under certain circumstances, including coaching changes last season.  https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/41702974/ncaa-approves-elimination-national-letter-intent-program

In the NBA preseason – Last night’s winners were New York, Houston, San Antonio, and Golden State.  Five games tonight including the Lakers at Milwaukee.

In the NHL – Last night’s winners were Montreal, Winnipeg, Calgary, Vegas, and the New York Rangers.  About half of the league has yet to play its regular season opener.  Some of those will be tonight including the Kings, Sharks and Predators.

In Soccer – LAFC will play at Vancouver this Sunday.

In golf – The Black Desert Championship teed off today in Ivins, Utah.  Kevin Streelman and Henrik Norlander had the early lead at 6 under par. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed and trading in a narrow range.  The Dow was down a quarter percent.  The S&P 500 was off by a tenth.  The Nasdaq was up a small fraction.  Gold traded $9 higher on the Comex at $2,635 an ounce.  Oil futures spiked again – up $2.58 a barrel to $75.82 for West Texas Intermediate Crude.

Data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows inflation continued to slow in September. The Consumer Price Index fell a tenth of a percent for the previous 12-months to 2.4%.  That’s the lowest its been since February of 2021 but was less of a cooldown than economists were expecting.  Taking out the volatile food and energy sectors, core CPI rose three tenths of a percent in September, bring that annual rate to 3.3% after holding steady at 3.2% the previous two months.  That sends the Federal Reserve a mixed message as it considers its next rate adjustment.  https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/10/economy/us-cpi-consumer-inflation-september/index.html

After hitting two-year lows, mortgage rates were up for the second straight week.  The average 30-year fixed rate is now 6.32%, according to Freddie Mac – the largest one-week increase since April.  They’d been trending down since Spring.  It was hoped they’d continue to fall after last month’s rate cut by the Federal Reserve.  But mortgage rates track the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield and bond rates rose after a much stronger-than-expected jobs report last week.  According to the Mortgage Bankers Association, this latest increase in mortgage rates is once again cooling home sales. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/10/business/mortgage-rates-rose-for-a-second-straight-week/index.html

Bank regulators announced today that TD Bank will pay $3b to settle charges that it laundered money from drug cartels.  A record $1.3b of that will be paid to the US Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.  They’ll also pay $1.8b to the Department of Justice and plead guilty to violating the Bank Secrecy Act and allowing money laundering.  According to the legal filing, TD Bank had failed to monitor 90% of transactions since 2018 which allowed three money laundering networks to collectively transfer more than $670m through TD accounts.  The Canadian-based bank will be subject to four years of monitoring to ensure it follows the rules, have restrictions on its growth in this country, and have to relocate its anti-money laundering compliance office to this country.  Stock in TD Bank fell 6% today on the news. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/10/investing/td-bank-settlement-money-laundering/index.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Disneyland has raised prices on most daily tickets and annual passes while keeping the lowest-priced admission unchanged as the Anaheim theme park prepares for the debut of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in November and a yearlong 70th anniversary celebration in 2025.  Ticket prices for Disneyland and Disney California Adventure increased an average of 6% on Wednesday, Oct. 9 with the cheapest Magic Key annual pass climbing by 20%. The highest-priced one park, one day ticket for Disneyland and Disney California Adventure broke through the $200 barrier for the first time in the park’s 69-year history.  Ten years ago, a one-park, one- day ticket to Disneyland cost $96.  That was before Disneyland moved to a tiered-pricing system. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/10/09/disneyland-ticket-price-increase-breaks-through-200-barrier/

Wendy’s is launching a promotion on Tuesday to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the SpongeBob SquarePants animated TV series.  The “Kollab” menu is for a limited time and includes the new Krabby Patty – a quarter pound burger with two slices of American cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and sauce on a toasted bun.  There’s no real or imitation crab in it, though some Wendy’s locations in Maryland have been offering one with crab dip.  There’s also a Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty, which is pineapple-mango puree swirled into a vanilla a Frosty.  You can now pretend to be eating at the Krusty Krab restaurant in the city of Biniki Bottom, just like in the TV show. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/10/10/wendys-krabby-patty/
