LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Escondido Police announced the arrest of a 30-year old man at a home on Paula Way in connection with the suspected fentanyl death of a 25-year old Escondido woman September 12.  The suspect was found to be in possession of fentanyl and paraphernalia consistent with narcotics sales.  With additional charges pending further toxicology testing, the suspect was booked into Vista jail on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/10/10/arrest-made-in-suspected-fentanyl-death-of-25-year-old-escondido-woman/

The passenger of a small plane that made an emergency landing on Highway 76 in Oceanside last month has been charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.  36-year old Troy Othneil Smith from Oceanside is accused of trying to hide a drug package from police shortly after the plane in which he was riding landed on the highway just after 1:30 a.m. Sept. 26.  It had taken off from Oceanside Airport about a mile east, but experienced engine problems. https://patch.com/california/oceanside-camppendleton/passenger-plane-made-sr-76-landing-faces-drug-charges

Recent attacks on homeless people in Oceanside along with a June Supreme Court ruling caused the city council to approve a “tune-up” of its homelessness policies at its meeting this week.  City Councilmember Ryan Keim said Wednesday that homeless camps aren’t safe for anybody and that the city’s goal isn’t to put anyone in jail, but to get anyone without shelter into programs and services that can help them improve their lives.  The proposed ordinance would remove the requirement for the city to offer shelter space or a motel and transportation voucher before enforcing the prohibition on camping in a public place.  Removal of personal property from public places would also happen after 24 hours instead of the current 48.  The council vote was 4-1.  It will take effect if approved again in a second reading in one month. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/10/10/oceanside-to-tighten-enforcement-of-homeless-camps-on-public-property/

Coastal rail service for Amtrak, the Coaster, and BNSF Freight will be suspended all day tomorrow between Oceanside and San Diego for scheduled track maintenance and construction along the bluffs in Del Mar. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/10/10/railroad-services-suspended-this-weekend-for-track-work/

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up on all three major US indexes.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 7 tenth of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up a half percent.  And the Nasdaq was up a quarter percent.  Gold shot up $35.30 an ounce on the Comex to $2,674.60.  Oil futures fell with the benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude down 64 cents to $75.21 a barrel.

7-Eleven announced it is closing 400 underperforming stores.  Japanese parent company Seven & I Holdings cited slow sales, declining store traffic, inflation pressure and a decrease in cigarette purchases.  The convenience store chain did not specify which locations.  It has 13k in the US, Canada and Mexico. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/11/business/7-eleven-closures/index.html

In April, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said, “If somebody doesn’t believe Tesla is going to solve autonomy, I think they should not be an investor in the company.”  Last night at Warner Bros studios in Burbank, he put some teeth in that statement with the unveiling of the company’s long-awaited robotaxi.  Calling it the Cybercab, the futuristic vehicle has no steering wheel or pedals and is said to be arriving sometime in 2026 at a cost of less than $30k.  There are still a lot of regulatory hurdles to clear and the company is famous for over-promising and under-delivering on announcements like yesterday’s.  Investors noted a lack of details given, sending Tesla stock lower today.   And Tesla isn’t even first to market with a self-driving taxi.  Waymo, a division of Alphabet has been operating driverless taxis for years and claims to provide more than 100k paid rides per week in San Francisco, LA and Phoenix.  GM’s Cruise program had driverless cabs, but had to put human backup at the wheel after a pedestrian was critically injured last year.  Tesla added a surprise reveal last night with a Robovan companion to Cybertaxi.  The Robovan has no windshield and can seat up to 20.  Tesla needs a win in the categories of self-driving technology and AI.  It’s losing EV market share to domestic and Chinese competitors and its stock is down 40% from its peak in 2021.  But its millions of cars and a few Cybertrucks already on the road gather it tons of useful data, and its less-expensive self-driving technology cold allow it to undercut Waymo on price.  www.morningbrew.com

For the majority of us still running on gasoline, average prices were up a penny today in San Diego County to $4.62 for the average gallon of regular.  That’s up two cents from a week ago and down a nickel from one month ago.  In Riverside, today’s average price is $4.43.  Today’s nationwide average is $3.19.  The current lowest local price is $3.95 at three independent stations in Escondido.  It’s $3.99 at Horizon Fuel in Valley Center.  In southwest Riverside County, it’s $3.87 at Temecula and Murrieta Costcos and at Murrieta Sam’s Club.  www.gasbuddy.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

New this week at the movies, four wide releases.  “Goodrich” stars Michael Keaton who suddenly becomes sole caregiver of a 9-year old.  “Smile 2” is a horror suspense sequel staring Naomi Scott.  “Hard Truths” is a drama about personality clashes between sisters.  And an all-star cast of voices are in the family adventure animated feature, “Gracie and Pedro: Pets to the Rescue”. https://www.movieinsider.com/movies/october/2024?view=list

With most print magazines cutting back size, frequency of issues or ceasing to print altogether, The Atlantic is bucking the trend and will return to publishing monthly in 2025 for the first time in two decades.  Before the early 2000s, it had been called The Atlantic Monthly.  Since then, it’s been publishing ten issues per year.  New reporting and editorial expansion follows an historic year of subscription growth and return to profitability.  This past spring The Atlantic reached 1m subscriptions and returned to profitability.  Nearly half of all subscribers receive the print version and it is one of the best-selling magazines on newsstands. https://www.theatlantic.com/press-releases/archive/2024/10/atlantic-returns-monthly-publication/680223/

DVD rental company, Redbox went bankrupt and quit doing business months ago.  But its legacy lives on in the form of about 24k of its vending machines which are still parked in front of CVS, Walmart and other locations.  The big red kiosks are still there because it’s a lot of trouble to get rid of them.  They weigh 900 pounds each and require an electrician to disconnect.  Here’s why this news appears in our Green Living category.  The big red vending machines are still freeloading electricity from their host locations in front of drug stores and other retailers.  Walgreens says its spending $184k a month on electricity for defunct Redboxes at 3,800 of its stores where they do nothing but take up space.  Eventually, a few will make it into museums as a memory of a bygone era.  Most will be sold for scrap. www.morningbrew.com
