LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, established by Presidential proclamation in 2021 as the second Monday in October to celebrate diversity and the legacy of a culture that dates back tens of thousands of years.  It is also Columbus Day, which the Pew Research Center identified as “one of the most inconsistently celebrated” holidays in the US.  According to RenameColumbusDay.org, twenty-nine states and the District of Columbia do not celebrate Columbus Day, yet it retains official status as a federal holiday.  Hundreds of cities have replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day celebrations recognizing the contributions of those who lived here long before Christopher Columbus erroneously claimed to have discovered America.  Some schools and offices are closed today.  It’s a Federal Reserve bank holiday.  However, not all major banks are closed.  Chase and TD are both open as are the stock markets.  There is no mail delivery today.  UPS and FedEx are operating as usual.  Government offices like the DMV, courts are libraries are closed.  Most retail is open.

The Pala tribe and San Diego Sheriffs present an information-sharing meeting on Public Law 280, which in California and five other states transfers law enforcement jurisdiction from the federal government to the state today at 4p at Pala Admin main hall.  There’ll be snacks and raffle prizes.  It also allows state courts to handle civil litigation.  PL 280 was passed by Congress in 1953 to save federal expenses and applies to reservations in California and six other states.

The California Office of Emergency Services is hosting an earthquake simulator demonstration today at UCSD in advance of Thursday’s Great American Shakeout.  The simulator allows you to experience earthquakes ranging from 3.0 to 7.0 magnitude.  Learn more about being prepared for earthquakes and the state’s earthquake early warning resources including the MyShake App at www.Earthquake.CA.gov .  The annual Great American Shakeout is scheduled for Thursday, October 17 (10/17) at 10:17a.  That’s the time when millions of people every year participate in drills to prepare for a real earthquake. www.shakeout.org

Groundbreaking for Native Oaks Village in Valley Center was held Friday.  According to the San Pasqual Economic Development Corporation, Albertsons will be the anchor of the retail center adjacent o Nativ Oaks golf course, across Valley Center Road from Park Circle in the South Village area. https://www.facebook.com/myVCBA/photos/its-official-the-san-pasqual-economic-development-corporation-confirmed-today-du/846844204310578/?_rdr
