LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle early this morning on northbound I-15 south of the Old Highway 395. The incident was reported to CHP shortly after 12:35a.  Reporting parties said the man was walking in traffic lanes with his arms stretched out and waving to passing drivers.  One caller said he was possibly waving down passing drivers before apparently attempting to cross the freeway.  Moments later, dispatchers received reports that the pedestrian had been hit and was lying in the roadway. Responding officers and emergency crews confirmed the fatality.  A black Mercedes-Benz was pulled over to the shoulder.  The victim was described as a white male adult wearing dark clothing.  His identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/10/09/news/span-classbrnwsbreaking-news-spanpedestrian-struck-and-killed-on-interstate-15/80126.html

A two-vehicle crash on I-5 North near the Lomas Santa Fe exit left multiple people injured yesterday afternoon.  According to reports from the California Highway Patrol, the collision involved a black Jeep Cherokee and a white or silver passenger vehicle.  The crash left both cars heavily damaged in the northbound lanes, prompting a large emergency response.  At least one person required ambulance transport to a nearby hospital for further treatment. https://i5accidents.com/oceanside-ca-two-vehicle-crash-on-i-5-n-lomas-santa-fe-leaves-injuries-2

A vehicle crash west of Pala around 8:45a this morning knocked out power to several dozen SDG&E customers in Pala and Valley Center.  It’s expected to be restored by 4p today. https://www.sdge.com/residential/customer-service/outage-center/outage-map

Gov. Newsom has killed a bill authored by Asm. Tasha Boerner of Encinitas that would have banned glitter and other microplastics from personal care products.  AB 823 would have expanded a law passed ten years ago that targeted microbeads that are rinsed off.  The new bill would have added particles present in products including exfoliants and toothpaste.  It’s said they don’t break down easily in the environment and end up in drinking water, food sources, and eventually human tissue. https://patch.com/california/san-diego/newsom-kills-glitter-microbead-ban-bill-authored-sd-lawmaker

An unusually strong storm for this time of year is sweeping across Southern California today.  People living in burn areas of Los Angeles are being advised to evacuate.  There’s even a possibility of tornadoes.  Most of the high amounts of rain and snow above 7k feet and severe winds will be in LA, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties.  But the burn areas in Orange County are at risk as well.  www.nws.gov .

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball league championships – Seattle leads Blue Jays two games to none after a 10-3 rout yesterday in Toronto.  The Mariners jumped out to a three-run lead with a homer by Julio Rodriguez in in the top of the first, then added three more in the 5th thanks to a homer by Jorge Polanco.  Meanwhile in Milwaukee, the Dodgers edged the Brewers 2-1.  LA’s Blake Snell pitched 8 shutout innings, allowing only one hit and striking out ten.  Freddy Freeman homered in the 6th.  Mookie Betts walked with the bases loaded in the 9th, scoring Max Muncy with what proved to be the winning run. Game 2 is today at 5p on TBS.

One more highlight of yesterday’s NLCS game was the Brewers pulling off the first-ever 8-6-2 double play in playoff history.  With the bases loaded in the 4th, Muncy hit a deep fly to center field.  The ball bounced off of Sal Frelick’s glove, hit the wall, then bounced back into his glove.  Muncy was not out because the ball hit the wall.  But the LA runners thought Muncy was out, so they tagged up, slowing their advance and giving the Brewers time to force out runners at second and home. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46588442/brewers-pull-wild-double-play-vs-dodgers-nlcs-game-1

In the NFL – The Ravens have released safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson just a week after signing him to their practice squad.  He became unnecessary later the same day when Baltimore traded the Chargers for safety Alohi Gilman.  Gilman earned the position when he made seven tackles in Sunday’s loss to the Rams. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46595159/ravens-release-cj-gardner-johnson-1-week-signing

In college football – The AP Top 25 #1 and #2 teams remain the same for Week 8 – Ohio State, followed by Miami.  Indiana jumped up four places to #3, leapfrogging #4 Texas A&M, #5 Ole Miss and #6 Alabama.  Texas Tech gained two places to #7.  Oregon fell five to #8 with its loss to new #20 USC.  Oklahoma plunged 8 places to #14 with its upset loss.  Other new additions to the Top 25 include Texas at #21, Utah at #23, Cincinnati at #24, and Nebraska at #25. https://www.espn.com/college-football/rankings

In the NBA – preseason – Yesterday’s winners were San Antonio, Washington, Minnesota, Dallas and Atlanta over Miami 119-118 in overtime.

In hockey – Ten games last night including the Kings 4-3 shootout loss at Minnesota.  Eight games tonight including the Ducks hosting Pittsburgh in Anaheim.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were mixed.  The Dow gained almost a full percent.  The S&P 500 was up four tenths.  But the Nasdaq fell a tenth.  Gold continued its charge, up $33.50 on the Comex to $4,166.50 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell 56 cents to $58.93 a barrel.

In a speech at an event hosted by the National Association for Business Economics this morning, Fed Chairman Jerome Powell talked about how the Federal Reserve is doing a difficult balancing act, keeping inflation down while lifting the job market.  He placed responsibility for being in that position squarely on President Trump’s sweeping policies on trade, immigration and government spending.  According to the Commerce Department, prices are up due to tariffs with more small businesses planning price hikes in the coming months – that, according to a survey by the National Federation of Independent Business.  All of this amid mounting signs of a weakening labor market with those out of work staying unemployed longer and more unemployed seeking work than there are job openings.  On top of all that, the government shutdown means no official economic data on which the Fed bases its decisions is being released. https://www.cnn.com/2025/10/14/business/powell-fed-inflation-jobs-tension

Boeing is on track to deliver more planes this year than any year since 2018.  55 were turned over to customers in September.  That’s 440 so far this year.  But the production of 737 Max jets is capped by the FAA at 38 a month following the blowout of a door plug during a flight in January of last year.  Rival Airbus is still ahead of Boeing with 507 deliveries so far this year. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/14/boeing-orders-deliveries-737-max.html

Major automakers are having to scale back production of electric vehicles due to lagging demand.  Next week’s 3rd quarter report from General Motors will show a $1.6b charge off as it reassesses its EV program.  More than a year ago, Ford announced a $1.9b impact from having to change its EV plans. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/14/gm-to-take-1point6-billion-charge-related-to-ev-pullback.html

California’s economy grew to the 5th largest in the world in 2017 and made it to #4 earlier this year, surpassing Japan for the first time.  But the latest data shows the state’s Gross Domestic Product now falling slightly behind a recovering Japan, according to the International Monetary Fund.  But that’s just the state of California.  All the other IMF top economies are entire countries, with the U.S., China, and Germany holding the top spots.  It’s expected that India will overtake California as #5 sometime next year. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/10/14/california-falls-to-worlds-fifth-largest-economy/

Scouting America, formerly known as the Boy Scouts is now offering merit badges in new technology: one in artificial intelligence and another is cybersecurity.  They’re two of hundreds of merit badges offered in scouting ranging from fishing to fingerprinting.  Scouting America is adding the new badges as part of a broader effort to remain relevant in an increasingly digital world. https://www.cnn.com/2025/10/14/tech/scouting-america-ai-cybersecurity-merit-badges

Speaking of which, you’ll soon be able to shop Walmart’s catalog on ChatGPT.  In partnership with OpenAI, Walmart hopes to change the standard experience of typing into a search bar and scrolling a list of item responses.  AI will allow shoppers a multimedia experience with more personalized answers.  The feature, which will use ChatGPT’s “Instant Checkout” tool is expected to launch this quarter with Sam’s Club joining in soon after.  https://www.cnn.com/2025/10/14/tech/walmart-openai-chatgpt-shopping-partnership
