LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A fifth suspect was arrested last week in connection with the random baseball bat attacks that wounded several people – some seriously, two months ago near Oceanside Harbor.  20-year old Steven Isacar Paz from San Diego was arrested Thursday on suspicion of being part of the gang-related assaults along North Harbor Drive.  Other arrests were made on September 3, 15 and October 3.  Charges included attempted murder, assault, conspiracy, taking part in gang crimes and probation violations. https://www.espn.com/college-football/rankings

The Las Vegas man arrested on weapons charges over the weekend just before the Trump rally in Coachella maintained in a video he posted yesterday that he is a Trump supporter.  Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco had said 49-year old Vern Miller was a potential assassin after his arrest Saturday when he was found carrying a loaded firearm, possessing a large capacity magazine, driving an unregistered car with fake plates and in possession of a pile of passports and drivers’ licenses in other people’s names.  According to the Sheriff, Miller and family members sat about 40 yards away from Trump at the rally. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/10/14/man-arrested-with-weapons-near-trump-rally-in-coachella-doubles-down-on-support-for-ex-president/

Buses transported thousands of rallygoers from three off-site parking lots to the evening rally at Calhoun Ranch just outside the Coachella city limits.  Many were reportedly stranded in the dark after the rally when the buses stopped running.  Sheriff’s deputies reported giving rides to some of them. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/10/14/trump-coachella-rallygoers-stranded-in-dark-miles-from-their-cars-after-speech-reports-say/

A 60-year old Del Mar man was killed when he lost control of his bicycle and crashed on Jimmy Durante Boulevard Saturday.  It happened just after 10a.  No other vehicles were involved. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/man-killed-in-bicycle-collision-in-del-mar

North Country Transit District has dropped plans to erect safety fencing along coastal rail tracks in Del Mar.  Residents had fought the plan for years, saying it would spoil the ocean view, lower property values and restrict beach access.  The California Coastal Commission had sued to stop it, saying it needed a full environmental analysis and a permit from the commission.  Bluff stabilization work will now proceed without the inclusion of a fence at rail bed level.  There will still be a low-profile fence along a new blufftop trail. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/10/14/nctd-drops-plan-to-build-safety-fence-along-railroad-tracks-in-del-mar/

About 100 SDG&E customers in the San Luis Rey / Ocean Hills part of Oceanside lost power this morning just after 10a.  Power is expected to be restored by 4p. https://www.sdge.com/residential/customer-service/outage-center/outage-map

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Mets broke the Dodgers’ three-game win streak yesterday afternoon at Dodger Stadium, evening up the National League Championship Series at a game apiece.  Final score, 7-3 including a grand slam home run in the second inning by Mark Vientos that proved to be the game-winner.  Before yesterday’s solo homer by Francisco Lindor in the first inning, the Dodgers had played 33 innings without allowing a run.  Shohei Ohtani was 0 for 3 yesterday.  Game 3 is tomorrow in New York.  The other New York team, the Yankees won their American League Championship Series opener against the visiting Cleveland Guardians with a 5-2 win.  Juan Soto kicked off a 3-run third inning with a solo homer to center field.  Game 2 is today at 4:30p on TBS.

In the NFL – Monday Night Football was a close one with Buffalo taking the Jets 23-20 in MetLife Stadium.  It looked like the Jets had turned the momentum going into halftime with a Hail Mary 52-yard completion for a touchdown with no time left on the clock, cutting Buffalo’s lead to 3, then tying the game halfway through the 3rd quarter.  But that was all they got with Buffalo managing one more field goal early in the 4th quarter.  The stats were pretty equal.  The Jets committed the only turnover of the night.

In college football – The AP Top 25 saw fewer changes this week.  Texas is still #1.  Oregon and Penn State each moved up one place to #2 and #3.  Penn State advanced by handing USC its third loss against just one win this season.  But it took overtime to do it. Ohio State dropped to #4.  Georgia, Miami and Alabama are still #s 5 through 7.  LSU jumped up five places to #8 for its overtime win against Ole Miss, who fell 9 places to #18.  https://www.espn.com/college-football/rankings

In the NBA preseason – Yesterday’s winners were Memphis, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Milwaukee and the Clippers.

In the NHL – Six games last night.  The Kings lost in overtime at Ottawa 8-7.  Josh Norris scored the game winner at 56 seconds into OT.  Other winners were Florida, New Jersey, Pittsburgh, and both New York teams.

In Soccer – LAFC edged the Whitecaps 2-1 at Vancouver Sunday.  This Saturday they host San Jose and the Galaxy are at Houston to play the Dynamo.

In golf – At the Black Desert Championship in Ivins, Utah, Matt McCarty was the winner Sunday by three strokes at 23-under par 261.   https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

In racing – Sunday at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Kyle Larson won the NASCAR event.

In local high school sports:

Bonsall – girls’ volleyball at School for Entrepreneurship and Technology at 6p

Fallbrook – girls’ golf at Mt. Carmel at 3:30p; girls’ tennis against San Pasqual at 3:30p, JV hosting, varsity away; girls’ volleyball at Mission Hills at 4p; boys’ water polo hosting Pacific Ridge at 4p

Valley Center – girls’ varsity tennis at Oceanside at 3:30p; girls’ JV tennis at Fallbrook at 3:30p; boys’ water polo hosting Escondido at 3:30p; girls’ flag football hosting Sage Creek at 7p

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down.  The Dow fell 4 tenths of a percent.  The S&P 500 was down a half.  And the Nasdaq was down almost a full percent.  Comex gold traded up $13.70 an ounce to $2,679.30.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures plunged 4 ½%, or $3.30 a barrel to $70.53.

Walgreens announced it is planning to close 1,200 locations and that’s causing its stock to have its best day in years.  It’s a 3-year plan to close about 14% of its stores with 500 of the closures scheduled for next year.  Investors reacted by sending Walgreens stock up 10% in morning trading today.  Since taking over last year, CEO Tim Wentworth has made many changes, including a $1b cost-cutting program that included cutting its stock dividend and lowering prices on 1,300 products in its U.S. stores.  The Deerfield, Illinois company warned in June that a significant number of its 8,600 stores in this county would close, but didn’t say how many until yesterday’s earnings call.  Walgreens and all of its competitors are all closing stores as a result of low reimbursement rates for pharmacy care, low dispensing fees for Medicaid enrollees, and the loss of federal assistance with health insurance since the end of the pandemic.  CVS is closing 900 stores and Rite Aid just emerged from bankruptcy with its store count down to about 1,300.  https://www.cbsnews.com/news/walgreens-store-closings/

Boeing workers in Seattle rallied on the one-month anniversary of a strike that has plunged one of the world’s two biggest commercial jet manufacturers into financial crisis.  13k of its West Coast workers went on strike September 13.  Meanwhile, production has halted on its best-selling 737 MAX, 767 and 777 widebody jets.  The Machinists union and Boeing management are each accusing the other of unfair labor practices during negotiation.  Boeing withdrew its most recent offer of a 30% wage increase over four years last week.  The union wants 40% … which is the percentage that stock in Boeing has dropped so far year.  It’s up 2% today. https://www.reuters.com/business/aerospace-defense/boeing-factory-workers-rally-seattle-strike-enters-second-month-2024-10-15/

After 75 years in the hardware business, True Value has filed for bankruptcy and plans to sell the Chicago-based chain to rival, Do It Best, which has offered $153m cash and would take over about $45m in contracts and obligations.  The company has between $500m and $1b in liabilities.  All 4,500 stores in the True Value chain will remain open during the process because they are independently owned.  The acquisition would create a chain of more than 8k Do It Best stores in the U.S. and more than 50 other countries. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2024/10/15/true-value-hardware-bankruptcy-sale-do-it-best/75682381007/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movie box office, “Terrifier 3” opened in first place with $14m in ticket sales, making the low budget horror flick an instant money maker.  It only cost $2m to produce. “The Wild Robot” and “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” remained in second and third place, with each selling about 25% fewer tickets than last week.  The latest Joker movie was the big news, falling a whopping 81% from its debut weekend last week to 4th place with $7m in ticket sales.  That’s the worst sophomore weekend drop for any comic book-based movie ever.  In comparison to Terrifier 3, “Joker; Folie a Deux” is a flop since it cost $200m to make.  “Piece by Piece” opened in 5th place on 1,800 screens with $3.8m in sales.  The weekend’s attendance overall was down about 25% from last week and well below average for the year. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2024W41/?ref_=bo_wey_table_4
