LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

This morning at 10:17a was this year’s Great American Shakeout.  People in government offices, businesses, and schools throughout California stopped what they were doing for a minute to “drop, cover, and hold on” during a statewide earthquake preparedness drill now in its 16th year.  The event organizers want residents to know what to expect in their area in case of a massive quake—namely, prepare to shelter for 72 hours with each resident having enough medicine, food, and water for their family members until help arrives.  www.shakeout.org

Orange County’s Violent Crime Task Force announced the end of a string of armed robberies at pharmacies across Southern California following one at Apollo Pharmacy on Rancho California Road in Temecula Monday.  A woman, identified as Kamaria Kendrick, 25, of Menifee, was seen wearing a medical mask and hat and walking around the pharmacy building while on her phone, and then driving around several more times.  While she waited in the vehicle, three men later identified as Aaron Carter, 39, of Fontana; Diamond Lucious, 25, of Victorville; and Isaac Penaldoza, 35, of San Bernardino entered the pharmacy wearing hoods, gloves and masks. The three ran back to the vehicle and attempted to flee, while the task force attempted to arrest the group. Kendrick at the wheel, allegedly struck one of the unmarked law enforcement vehicles. A 9 mm pistol was thrown as the task force personnel stopped the car.  All four were arrested without further incident.  They’re believed responsible for four pharmacy robberies in three counties over a six-week period. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/10/16/alleged-members-of-armed-robbery-crew-arrested-in-temecula/

Officials in San Marcos celebrated the near-completion of its transformative San Marcos Creek project yesterday.  The city’s official description call it a 214-acre project adjacent to the San Marcos Creek, generally bounded by West San Marcos Boulevard on the north, Grand Avenue to the east,Via Vera Cruz to the west, andDiscovery Avenue on the south.  The project with its two bridges, a levee and more than a mile of storm drains adds needed infrastructure to reduce long-standing flooding issues and improve traffic circulation while revitalizing and preserving the San Marcos Creek.  It took five years and $100m along with lengthy road closures and weather delays.  But the end is in sight. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/san-marcos-leaders-mark-near-completion-of-san-marcos-creek-project

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up modestly.  The Dow gained a third of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up less than a tenth.  The Nasdaq was up just over a tenth.  Comex gold traded up $15.90 an ounce at $2,707.20.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up 33 cents to $70.72 a barrel.

Artificial Intelligence is proving to be a boon at the Internal Revenue Service.  Machine learning AI helped the Treasury Department root through massive amounts of data and recover $1b worth of check fraud in fiscal 2024.  That’s triple the amount recovered the previous year.  It gets better.  AI is credited with helping the Treasury Department prevent and recover more than $4b in overall fraud in fiscal 2024.  That’s six times the previous year.  To be clear, the department is not using generative AI – the kind that’s been making headlines for creating images and text and answering complex questions.  This is machine learning AI that analyzes data, and makes decisions and predictions based on what it’s learned – all in a fraction of the time it takes humans.  Suspicious transactions can be sniffed out in milliseconds. Financial fraud against taxpayer money is something that soared during the pandemic as the government scrambled to disburse emergency aid to consumers and businesses. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/ai-helped-feds-catch-1-100052865.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

The Federal Trade Commission finalized a new rule yesterday that will make subscription-based services as easy to cancel as they are to sign up for.  It’s called the “click to cancel” rule and is aimed at eliminating your having to jump through hoops and give up your firstborn to get out of that enticing free-trial that you forgot to cancel.  Under the FTC’s new rule, online subscriptions and memberships should take the same number of clicks to cancel as they do to initiate.  You also need to be able to cancel using the same methods you signed up, except that in-person sign-ups should also have remote cancellation options.  To start a free trial, companies need to be clear about their auto-renewal policies and can’t start charging customers without “informed consent” – even it’s only another box to check at sign-up.  The rule will ake effect in six months and make it easier for regulators to sue companies like Planet Fitness and Hello Fresh, who are often mentioned in complaints to the FTC.  The Commission is already in subscription-related lawsuits against Amazon and Adobe. www.morningbrew.com

Speaking of Amazon, its Kindle division launched a new lineup of e-readers yesterday, including the first model offered with a color screen.  The new Colorsoft and Paperwhite models are essentially the same except for the full color screen which also lets you highlight text in yellow, orange, blue or pink.  It’ll sell for $280 beginning October 30.
