The Department of the Navy is announcing a public meeting and a public review and comment period for the Proposed Plan to close out a munitions disposal site at Naval Weapons Station Fallbrook. The munitions disposal site, known as Site UXO 4, is approximately 6.3 acres in size and is located on the central portion of the base.  It is not accessible to the public and was reportedly used from 1942 to 1978 as a burial area for packing materials and practice munitions. Disposed materials included practice rifle grenades and scrap metal.  Multiple site investigations have been completed to evaluate potential threats to human health and the environment. They concluded that only inert practice munitions with no explosives hazard were still located at the site. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2024/10/10/news/span-classbrnwsbreaking-news-spannavy-announces-oct-22-public-meeting-and-comment-period-for-closeout-of-fallbrook-base-munitions-site-cleanup/77225.html

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks showed modest gains on the Dow Jones Industrial Average – up less than a tenth of a percent.  The S&P 500 was up four tenths.  The Nasdaq was up almost 7 tenths.  Gold gained $23.90 on the Comex to $2,731.40 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures fell a dollar to $69.71 a barrel.  That’ll make this the biggest weekly drop in oil prices this year.

Netflix’ quarterly earnings once again beat Wall Street expectations.  It added 5m customers in Q3, growing its subscriber base worldwide to about 282m.  The $10b in revenue last quarter was significantly more than the same time a year ago.  But its growth is slowing, which leads financial analysts to say, “expect another price hike.”  www.morningbrew.com

CVS announced this morning that David Joyner was replacing Karen Lynch as company CEO, effective immediately.  Joyner had been the head of CVS Caremark, which manages the parent firm’s pharmacy benefit operations and was executive VP of CVS.  Despite his credentials with four decades in the industry, the suddenness of the announcement caused CVS stock to tumble more than 7% this morning.  All pharmacy chains are having a tough year, closing stores and laying off employees.  Rite-Aid is currently in bankruptcy reorganization. https://www.fastcompany.com/91212340/cvs-stock-price-tumbles-ceo-shakeup-karen-lynch-replaced-david-joyner-in

Adding to CVS’s woes, CVS workers are on strike today, picketing and rallying at stores in the Mid City area of Los Angeles, according to union leaders.  CVS Pharmacy workers represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 770 in Southern California declared a strike at 7 a.m.  The union represents nearly 7,000 CVS workers who are on strike to protest what leaders say are unlawful activities that have interfered with bargaining and prevented employees from reaching a fair deal. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/10/18/cvs-pharmacy-workers-are-striking-and-plan-to-picket-and-rally-in-la/

According to the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, both Presidential candidates’ budget plans would widen the federal deficit.  But the Committee says former President Trump’s proposed sweeping tariffs including 60% on everything coming from China, plus 10% to 20% on all other imports would add about $7.5 trillion to the deficit over the next decade compared with $3.5 trillion for Vice President Harris’s proposals.  That’s because it isn’t the foreign countries that pay tariffs.  It’s importers, who are American companies and would then have to pass the increased costs on to consumers through higher prices.  According to GasBuddy, fuel prices in the Midwest could go up 75 cents a gallon since most fuel in that region comes from Canada.  Retailers, automakers and industrial companies would be the hardest hit by tariffs and Morgan Stanley estimates increased prices on products not produced domestically would cause inflation to tick up almost a full percent.  www.morningbrew.com

The Financial Times reported yesterday that Uber is considering acquiring travel booking site, Expedia.  Uber has ambitions to grow the brand into a “super app”, similar to China’s WeChat.  They’ve already expanded from ride-sharing into food delivery, freight and other sectors.  Acquiring Expedia would also include its holdings – Vrbo, Hotels.com, and Orbitz.  The timing is good for Uber.  Its stock is up 85% in the past 12 months with a market cap now at $170b.  Earlier this year, it reported its first-ever profit.  Talks of the takeover are still early enough that Uber could walk away without any penalty. www.morningbrew.com

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Retail gasoline prices are mostly flat this week.  The average for a gallon of regular in San Diego County is $4.62 – up a small tick from yesterday, but about where it was a month ago.  In Riverside County, it’s about 8 cents less and following the same pattern.  Today’s nationwide average is $3.17. The lowest local price today is $3.91 at Stars & Stripes on North Escondido Boulevard, Sun Valley Fuel about two blocks away and Son’s at 5th and Centre City Parkway in Escondido.  In the Temecula Valley, it’s $3.81 at Murrieta Sam’s Club and $3.82 at Temecula and Murrieta Costcos.  www.gasbuddy.com
