Oceanside is one of several cities looking to raise or extend previous raises in the local sales tax rate.  Oceanside city Measure X would extend a half-cent city sales tax first approved in 2018 an extra ten years through April of 2036, keeping the local total sales tax rate at 8 ¼%.  According to a city staff report, Measure X money has been used exclusively to improve road conditions, modernize city infrastructure, enhance public safety, help with homelessness, and expand youth programs.  If not renewed, the extra half-cent would go away after April 2026.  The measure requires a simple majority to pass. https://patch.com/california/oceanside-camppendleton/measure-x-aims-extend-oceansides-half-cent-sales-tax

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – This year’s World Series will be between the Dodgers and the Yankees – just like the good ole’ days.  It came about as the Yankees won Game 5 in the American League pennant series with the Guardians in Cleveland.  Final score 5-2 in ten innings thanks to a three-run homer by Juan Soto.  Yankees took the series four games to one.  Then yesterday, the Dodgers got out to an early lead, earning all the runs they’d need in the bottom of the third, going on to win 10-5 over the Mets in Game 6 at Dodger Stadium, taking the National League pennant four games to two.  The Dodgers have been in the World Series 21 times.  The Yankees hold the record at 41 times.  This will be the 12th time they’ve faced each other in the World Series – the most of any matchup.  During baseball’s golden era, the then-Brooklyn Dodgers and Yankees played each other in the Fall classic six time in ten years beginning in 1947.  The last time was 1981.  Out of the eleven times they’ve met in the World Series, New York won eight of them.  Game One of this year’s World Series is this Friday in Los Angeles.

In the NFL – The Rams broke a two-game losing streak by beating the visiting Raiders 20-15 yesterday.  Other winners in Week 7 included the Steelers, Jacksonville, Seattle, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Green Bay, Indianapolis, Detroit, Philadelphia, Washington and Kansas City.  The Chargers are at Arizona and Baltimore is at Tampa Bay tonight on ABC.

In college football – There’s going to be a new #1 this week.  #5 Georgia upset #1 Texas 30-15 to start off Saturday’s lineup of games.  At about the same time, #11 Tennessee dealt #7 Alabama a 24-17 upset.  That was it for the upsets.  All the rest of the top ranked teams won their games.

In the NBA – The regular season begins tomorrow with New York at Boston and the Lakers hosting Minnesota.

In the NHL – Just three games yesterday.  The Kings beat the Ducks in Anaheim 4-1.  Same score for Colorado over San Jose.  And Winnipeg beat the visiting Penguins 6-3.  The Jets are the only remaining unbeaten team in the NHL.

In Soccer – On Saturday, LAFC beat the visiting San Jose Earthquakes 3-1 and the Galaxy lost 2-1 to the Dynamo in Houston.

In golf – At the Shriners Children’s Open in Las Vegas, J.T. Poston won with a 22-under par 262. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

In racing – NASCAR Cup yesterday at Las Vegas, Joey Logano was the winner.

2,400 mental health workers at Kaiser Permanente locations across Southern California are on strike as of this morning after management rejected contract proposals to improve wages, benefits and prep time for therapists.  The National Union of Healthcare Workers’ contract expired September 30.  The strike is happening just a year after Kaiser settled for $200m with state regulators who found that patients were subjected to excessive wait times for appointments.  Union leaders say the problems are still there.  Kaiser says its therapists already get wages above market rates and that it had offered an 18% raise during negotiations. https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-10-21/kaiser-mental-health-therapists-strike-southern-california

The strike by machinists against Boeing may be about to end.  The union and the company have agreed to a contract proposal featuring a 35% pay increase over the next four years, bigger 401(k) contributions and a higher signing bonus.  Last month, labor overwhelmingly rejected a 25% raise.  30k union members will vote on the new proposal Wednesday with the union telling its members the deal is “worthy of your consideration”.  The strike is in its 5th week, has halted production of most lines of Boeing aircraft and cost the company over $1b. www.morningbrew.com

In this edition of executive musical chairs, Disney has announced that Morgan Stanley executive chairman and former CEO James Gorman will be its new chairman of the board, effective January 2.  He’ll step down from Morgan Stanley to accept the position being vacated by Mark Parker, the executive chairman of Nike.  Disney is not yet ready to say who will be replacing CEO Bob Iger, but they are saying when that will be … in early 2026. This is Iger’s second time as Disney CEO.  He ran the company for 15 years, retiring in 2020, but coming out of retirement two years ago when Disney fired CEO Bob Chapek. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bob-iger-disney-ceo-james-gorman-chairman/

Less than a year after rebooting under a new parent company, BuyBuy Baby is once again closing all of its stores and shifting to online-only.  Closeout sales began Friday.  Gift cards will be accepted until the end of the month.  Registries and the use of gift cards will continue online after that.  BuyBuy Baby had as many as 120 stores across the country until its parent company, Bed Bath & Beyond went bankrupt and sold it off.  The latest iteration was only ten stores, all in the East. https://www.crossroadstoday.com/news/shareable-stories/buybuy-baby-stores-closing/article_cd01b662-03d8-5741-a6a5-6fa4731ee446.html
