LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
After saying Thursday that live fire demonstrations on Camp Pendleton Saturday would not affect the 5 freeway through the base, CHP changed their mind and closed 17 miles of freeway from 11a to 3p Saturday out of an abundance of caution. In spite of the gigantic traffic jam the closure created, it turned out to be a good idea. Shrapnel from an ordinance that prematurely detonated over the roadway struck a CHP vehicle that was part of Vice President JD Vance’s detail near Las Pulgas Road. There were no injuries and only minor damage reported. Additional firings over the freeway were cancelled and the area swept for further evaluation. Saturday’s celebration was to honor the 250th birthday of the Marine Corp coming up November 10. The U.S. Navy turned 250 yesterday. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/shrapnel-strikes-damages-chp-vehicle-during-camp-pendletons-marine-corp-celebration
An RV fire on Highway 76 near Magee Road blocked the eastbound lane of the highway just after 4p Saturday. Hillside brush caught fire, causing the dispatch of air support to drop water on the area. CHP fully closed 76 between Lilac Road and Adams Street for well over an hour. No one was injured. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/10/16/news/rv-fire-shuts-down-highway-76-near-magee-road/80187.html
Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the recovery of a San Diego Fire Engine stolen from a parking lot in Chula Vista around 4:30p Saturday. Pursuit of the engine ended around 5:10p near Loch Ness Drive in Fallbrook. San Diego Sheriff’s deputies recovered the truck and arrested a suspect in the nearby area. No information on that person’s identity or any other information on how the engine was stolen was immediately available. https://fox5sandiego.com/news/local-news/stolen-fire-truck-pursuit-ends-in-fallbrook-arrest/
Oceanside Police shut down two massage parlors following a year-long investigation into allegations of prostitution and other illicit activity. Detectives began operations at Nirvana Spa on Mission Avenue and Seaside Acupressure on Greenbrier Drive in September of last year. Both business licenses have been revoked and the owners are no longer allowed to operate within the city. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/oceanside-police-shut-down-2-massage-parlors-for-alleged-prostitution

The fall celebration featured local artisans, food vendors, tractors, a beer and wine garden, pie and costume contests and children’s activities. This year’s event had 114 booths. SPORTS
In Major League Baseball league championships – It took seven games, but the Toronto Blue Jays, pulled off a come-from-behind win of the American League pennant, beating Seattle 6-2 on Sunday. A bottom of the 7th inning 3-run homer by George Springer did the trick. The Jays had done the same thing to Seattle in 1993 with a 4-3 Game 7 win for the AL pennant that year as well. Sunday’s win sets up a World Series between the Blue Jays and Dodgers beginning this Friday in Toronto with the Dodgers heavily favored to win. Game One will be 5p on Fox.
The Angels have hired Kurt Suzuki to be their new manager. The 42-year old longtime major league catcher has no professional coaching experience. He was with five franchises in his 16-year playing career including the 2019 World Series winning Washington Nationals. He replaces Ron Washington, who missed almost half of the 2025 season following quadruple bypass surgery. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46672864/sources-angels-hire-ex-catcher-kurt-suzuki-manager

Amazon’s AWS cloud computing platform experienced a global outage, limiting its IT services including computing power, storage and databases for nearly one third of its customers yesterday. AWS hosts many of the world’s online services through over 200 of its products. Bottom line, a lot of websites were offline for a good portion of the day yesterday. According to Amazon, the outage originated at the company’s Virginia data center. Critics are saying a cost-cutting “brain drain” finally caught up with Amazon. This isn’t the first major cloud glitch. AWS had one that knocked out websites two years ago. And a faulty update took down much of Microsoft’s cloud services last year. There are huge benefits to hiring the vast resources of the relatively few major cloud computing players including Amazon, Microsoft and Google. But these outages point out the fragile and vulnerable nature of the modern internet and reliance on a small group of companies. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/amazons-massive-aws-outage-points-to-a-key-weakness-in-the-modern-internet-145418180.html
Warner Bros. Discovery is for sale with several interested buyers. Netflix and Comcast are two of them. Neither of them really want WBD. They just don’t want it to go to someone else, like Paramount, whose bid had already been rejected. The announcement caused shares in the entertainment company to jump 10%. Warner Bros. Discovery is still planning to split its operations into two separate entities – one for streaming and studio business, the other for global networks. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/21/wbd-sale-warner-bros-media.html
Stock in General Motors shot up 15% this morning after announcing it beat Wall Street earnings expectations for a third consecutive quarter. It also lowered the expected impact of tariffs and is predicting 4th quarter numbers that will also be ahead of analysts’ expectations. GM’s EV market share has improved from 8.7% at the beginning of the year to 13.8% through September, topping Hyundai. The only bad news, which had already been factored in was that it’ll take longer than previously expected for General Motors’ electric vehicles to become profitable. Its profit margin on North American sales was also off by about a third. Gain in the company’s operations in China and other international markets offset the North American decline. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/21/general-motors-gm-earnings-q3-2025.html

The woman who gave National Public Radio its voice for decades died Thursday. A little over 50 years ago, Susan Stamberg became the first woman to co-host a nightly network news broadcast. She had retired just a month ago after taking NPR from a set of little-known initials to a major player in network news. Stamberg had a somewhat husky voice and used a lot of inflection and a good dose of humor in her delivery. Most of all, she gave NPR News personality. Susan Stamberg was 87. https://www.npr.org/2025/10/18/nx-s1-5572394/opinion-susan-stamberg-gave-npr-its-voice
