LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
Hundreds of Alaska Airlines flights have been canceled, causing headaches for customers in California and across the country, as the airline continues to work to resolve technical issues that first arose yesterday. The carrier says it experienced what it called “an IT outage” at its primary data center beginning at 3:30p yesterday. According to Reuters News Service, Alaska Airlines requested that the Federal Aviation Administration ground all of its flights, including those on its subsidiary Horizon Air, last evening. https://patch.com/california/los-angeles/hundreds-flights-grounded-airline-it-outage-snarls-travel-ca-airports

SPORTS
Pala wrapped up its three-day annual Senior Chair Volleyball Tournament at the casino’s Events Center yesterday. Event coordinator, Eric Varela reports 50 teams, representing 16 tribes signed up for this year’s event. The furthest-traveled came from Washington state, about an hour and a half south of Canada. The team from Wilton Rancheria in Elk Grove, north of the Bay Area was a first-time attendee. Defending champions, the Pala Turtles were defeated in the championship round by the Firebirds from Arizona. Mens’ MVP was Levi. Women’s MVP was Lela. The Silver and Bronze championship games also went to teams from Arizona. The Unknowns beat the La Jolla Gems for the Silver, and Salt River topped Cocopa Classics for the Bronze. Unknowns MVPs were Tommy and Sally. Salt River MVPs were Mr. Bradford and Miss Serena. Pala Turtles hand beaded the MVP awards for all three top teams. A big thanks to all the locals who volunteered to help run the tournament – some of them literally at the last minute. (story by Eric Ortega)
In Major League Baseball – The World Series begins tonight with the Dodgers in Toronto. Blake Snell will be the starting pitcher for Los Angeles. Rookie Trey Yesavage will start for the Blue Jays.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is regretting a public comment he made following last week’s National League pennant win over Milwaukee. He worries that what he said could make him appear to be a villain in the debate over whether teams should be allowed to spend whatever they can afford to assemble a top-notch team. Baseball is the only major professional sport without a salary cap. The Dodgers payroll this season is $350m – just slightly more than the Mets. That’s almost twice the league average and five times what the Miami Marlins spent, with all other franchises falling in between. Roberts’ quote: “They said the Dodgers are ruining baseball. Let’s get four more wins and really ruin baseball!” https://sports.betmgm.com/en/blog/mlb/mlb-teams-highest-payrolls-2023-bm15/
In the NFL – Last night at SoFi Stadium, the Chargers routed the visiting Vikings 37-10. Justin Herbert passed for 227 yards including three touchdowns. The Chargers held the ball for almost two thirds of the game, converting third downs twice as often as Minnesota. Eleven games this Sunday. The Rams have a bye this week. https://www.espn.com/nfl/game/_/gameId/401772942/vikings-chargers
In college football – Tomorrow’s Week 9 schedule begins with #2 Indiana hosting unranked UCLA at 9a on Fox. #8 Ole Miss is at #13 Oklahoma at 9a on ABC. The noon game is #4 Alabama at South Carolina. San Diego State is at Fresno State at 12:30 on FS1.
In the NBA – Last night’s winners were Oklahoma City in double overtime over the Pacers in Indianapolis. Golden State topped Denver 137-131 in overtime in spite of Aaron Gordon’s 50 points for the Nuggets. Steph Curry had 42 for the Warriors.
Details of yesterday’s NBA gambling busts are coming out. Some of it sounds straight out of an “Oceans” movie. In the second of the two cases – the one involving rigged card games, Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups and former player and coach Damon Jones acted as celebrity players in a mafia-linked poker game that swindled players by using table X-rays, secret cameras hidden in card trays, and a card shuffler that fed info to someone behind the scenes. Players in on the scheme allegedly wore contact lenses and glasses that enabled them to read marked cards. More than 30 people were arrested in 11 states yesterday in connection with this, and a scheme that provided insider information for placing prop bets. www.morningbrew.com
In hockey – Last night’s winners were Anaheim, LA, Chicago, Ottawa, Pittsburgh, San Jose, Utah, Nashville, Seattle, Carolina, Edmonton and the New York Islanders.
In Major League Soccer – San Diego FC’s first-ever post-season game is Sunday hosting Portland, whom they beat to make it straight to the first round of the playoffs.
In golf – At the Bank of Utah Championship at Black Desert Resort in Ivins, Utah, halfway through round 2, the leader was Matt McCarty at 6 under par. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard
In racing – NASCAR this Sunday at Martinsville.
In local high school sports:
Bonsall – girls’ volleyball finished the season yesterday with a fourth consecutive win – this time 3-1 over River Valley.

Apple is reportedly cutting production of its iPhone Air due to low demand. The model has only been on the market for a few weeks. It’s been criticized for relatively low battery life and having just a single camera, though people like its light weight. Other models, including the iPhone 17 are reportedly selling well. www.morningbrew.com
Proctor & Gamble beat earnings expectations for the third quarter, but noted that some of its products are seeing weakening demand as the economy goes into a so-called “K-shape” where consumers shop based on their incomes. That usually means middle income consumers joining lower income consumers in foregoing higher-priced name brands. CEO Jon Moeller calls it a “challenging consumer and geopolitical environment.” https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/24/procter-gamble-pg-q1-2026-earnings.html
With just two months until Christmas, retail experts say consumers are hunting for deals like never before, while companies are rolling out holiday campaigns earlier and tweaking how they offer discounts. Kohls’ strategy is to hit shoppers early and often. Their chief marketing officer says last year, shoppers made 15+ trips to its stores between November and January, but checked out with smaller baskets than the year before. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/24/christmas-shopping-holiday-season-retail-expectations.html
