LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A Feather Alert was issued yesterday for an at-risk missing person in Pauma Valley.  34-year old Toni Gonzales was last seen one week ago around 10a in Pauma Valley.  CHP describes her as 5 foot 9 inches tall, weighing 180 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.  The Pauma tribe-affiliated woman is believed to be traveling on foot.  Anyone who sees Gonzales should call 9-1-1. https://www.newsbreak.com/fox-5-san-diego-1589916/4317395649718-feather-alert-issued-for-missing-person-in-rural-north-county

Murrieta State Sen. Kelly Seyarto’s SB 78 has been signed into law by Gov. Newsom.  It directs Caltrans to submit a comprehensive report to the state legislature within about 14 months, identifying roadway safety improvements, causes of project delays and strategies to complete projects more efficiently.  As an example, Seyarto cited the crash on Pacific Coast Highway two years ago that killed four Pepperdine students.  Despite nearly 4k crashes over the past decade, improvements to “PCH and other dangerous corridors has been repeatedly stalled by bureaucratic barriers.”  According to Seyarto’s office, low income and minority communities face higher risks of fatal crashes. https://patch.com/california/murrieta/ca-s-roads-should-not-be-places-tragedy-governor-signs-murrieta-lawmakers-bill

The North County non-profit, Interfaith Community Services, now has a fund set up to help those being impacted or who could be impacted by federal funding cuts and the government shutdown.  It was announced that those receiving SNAP benefits will definitely be cut off from their next distribution even if the government shutdown were to end today, which it shows no signs of doing.  https://www.newsbreak.com/abc-10-news-kgtv-563645/4317363407661-north-county-non-profit-sets-up-fund-to-help-those-impacted-by-federal-funding

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – fans got a two-fer last night.  Game Three of the World Series was twice as long as a normal game – 18 innings with the Dodgers coming out on top, 6 to 5 on a game-ending home run by Freddie Freeman.  Almost exactly a year ago, it was Freeman who hit a walk-off grand slam homer in the first game of the 2024 World Series.  This time it was in a marathon game that tied for the longest in World Series history.  Freeman’s homer yesterday came on the 609th pitch, in the 399th minute, against the 19th pitcher of Game Three.  Other stars last night included Dodger relief pitcher Will Klein, who went from last man left in the bullpen to hero after throwing four scoreless innings, and Shohei Ohtani who set a postseason record, reaching base nine times in the game including hitting a game-tying homer in the 7th inning, then walking his next five times at bat including four intentional walks.  It was manager Dave Roberts 2018 Dodgers who won the other 18-inning World Series Game against the Red Sox with a Max Muncey walk-off home run. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46753866/freddie-freeman-walk-home-run-18th-inning-sends-dodgers-blue-jays-world-series-game-3

Game Four is today at 5p on Fox with the Dodgers leading the Blue Jays two games to one.

In the NFL – Last night in Kansas City, the Chiefs routed the visiting Washington Commanders 28-7.  Patrick Mahomes passed for 299 yards and three of the Chiefs’ four touchdowns.  They had almost twice as many first downs, but also three times as many penalties as the Commanders.  Travis Kelce’s 10-yard touchdown late in the third quarter tied former running back Priest Holmes for most TDs in franchise history at 83.  The Chiefs have won five of their last six games – all of them by double digits. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46753473/travis-kelce-ties-chiefs-td-mark-vintage-performance-win

Week 9 begins Thursday with Baltimore at Miami.

In college football – With no upsets among the top 17 teams last weekend, the first six slots of the AP Top 25 remain the same with Ohio State still at #1.  Ole Miss and Georgia Tech exchange places at #7 and #8 respectively.  Tennessee gained three places to #14.  Oklahoma fell five to #18.  Missouri was down four to #19.  Joining the list were Houston at #22, USC at #23, Utah at #24 and Memphis at #25.  San Diego State got 14 votes but missed the list by six places.  This week’s Coaches Poll matched the AP with Ole Miss and Georgia Tech maintaining their positions from last week.  So, no changes down to 11th place on the Coaches Poll. https://www.espn.com/college-football/rankings

In the NBA – Portland beat the Lakers 122-108.  Other winners were Cleveland, Philadelphia, Chicago, Houston, Boston, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Denver, Golden State and Utah over the visiting Suns 138-134 in overtime.  Five games tonight including the Clippers at Golden State.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up.  The Dow gained a half percent.  The S&P 500 was up two tenths.  And the Nasdaq rose almost six tenths of a percent.  Gold fell below $4k, falling $45.60 to $3,974.10 an ounce.  Oil dropped significantly, with the benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude down $1.21 to $60.10 a barrel.

The Federal Reserve has convened its latest two-day meeting.  It’s likely to announce another quarter point interest rate cut tomorrow.  According to a CNBC poll of 38 economists, strategists and fund managers, a rate cut is 92% likely, though only 66% think it’s warranted.  Concerns over an AI bubble and the lack of economic data during the government shutdown were the main reasons for skepticism about lowering interest rates this month.  80% of those surveyed say stocks related to AI are extremely or somewhat overvalued and by an average of 20%. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/28/the-fed-is-likely-to-keep-cutting-interest-rates-but-multiple-dangers-lurk-cnbc-survey-finds.html

UPS has cut 34k operational positions, which is 14k more than they first planned.  They also trimmed 14k management jobs.  Earnings results have justified the move.  Q3 results released today by UPS exceeded Wall Street expectations.  Most of the cuts have been due to less business from Amazon.  Total volume of Amazon shipments fell 21% in the third quarter compared with a 13% decline in the first half of this year.  The UPS turnaround plan has resulted in $2.2b in savings so far this year.  As a result, UPS stock is up 7 ½% today. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/10/28/ups-earnings-q3-2025.html

Amazon plans to cut 14k jobs, or 4% of its workforce – mostly due to AI.  News reports had put that number at as many as 30k corporate jobs across human resources, cloud computing and many other divisions.  Amazon is a major player in cloud-computing.  But its growth in AI is lagging behind Microsoft and other rivals.  CEO Andy Jassy thinks it’s due to too many people in some departments and not enough in others.  Just last week, Amazon’s AWS cloud service suffered one of its worst outages in history, disrupting popular websites and apps including Venmo and Reddit.  Amazon’s latest financial report will be released Thursday. https://www.npr.org/2025/10/28/nx-s1-5588545/amazon-layoffs-corporate-workers-ai

Apple has joined the $4 trillion club.  Nvidia and Microsoft reached that milestone earlier this year.  Apple’s stock had tumbled earlier this year, in part due to tariffs, but also AI product delays.  Its capitalization fell by $310b in one day back in April.  But it’s since worked its way back, is moving significant manufacturing capacity back to the U.S. and is now showing a 7% stock gain for the year.  That Nvidia surpassed the much more established Apple in achieving a valuation of over $4 trillion emphasizes how AI is becoming every bit as important and foundational in the tech world as the smartphone or the internet.  https://www.cnn.com/2025/10/28/business/apple-worth-4-trillion

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

With late night talk show hosts forming a united front against the Trump Administration following the impending cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s “The Late Show” and the one-week suspension of “Jimmy Kimmel Live”, Jon Stewart now says he will try extend his stay back at the helm of “The Daily Show” past his December contract expiration and urges people to “fight like hell”.  Stewart hosted The Daily Show from 1999 to 2015, returning last year to host just the Monday episodes.  He acknowledged his fears about Trump’s authoritarian approach and warned that the US may end up with “some kind of soft autocracy where news is controlled.”  He urged administration critics to recognize the power they have and to use it.  The Daily Show’s network, which is owned by Paramount, had no comment.  Paramount will need federal approval for what may soon become a hostile attempted takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery.   https://www.cnn.com/2025/10/27/media/jon-stewart-daily-show-paramount-trump-ellison
