LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

The Oceanside Planning Commission has approved a six-story, 77-unit building for a lot in Oceana, next to El Camino Real.  Bella Vista’s proposed mixed-use tower would be on the access road to Oceana where there’s now a two-story office building.  More than 200 residents of the neighboring 55 and older community sent letters opposing the project.  Most mentioned the 60-foot height and number of apartments for a 2-acre lot.  Nevertheless, the Planning Commission approved the project on a 3-1 vote.  Those who voted yes say California laws enacted to address the housing crisis leave the city no way to stop the project.  Those laws allow the developer to build up to 102 apartments on the site in spite of city zoning that caps development at 51.  https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/10/30/oceana-residents-unhappy-about-6-story-mixed-use-development/

Construction has begun on the double track bridge over Batiquitos Lagoon between Carlsbad and Encinitas.  The joint effort between Caltrans and SANDAG replaces an 85-year old wooden bridge and adds about a mile of double track where an increasing number of trains can travel in opposite directions at the same time.  The project is said to improve train service reliability, allow expanding passenger service, provide resilience to sea level rise and improve tidal flow for the benefit of local wildlife.  The $166m project is funded by a combination of state and local money including the regional half-cent sales tax administered by SANDAG.  There will be minimal disruption to train service and the project will take four years to complete. https://www.kpbs.org/news/living/2024/10/29/construction-begins-on-double-track-train-bridge-at-north-countys-batiquitos-lagoon

Kaiser mental health workers are now in their second week of a strike for better wages and benefits at facilities throughout Southern California.  The union said Monday that last week’s offer from management contained “practically nothing new beyond an additional 25 cents per hour for bilingual workers.”  Kaiser says it’s already paying more than their peers.  The union says Kaiser therapists are making up to 40% less than non-mental health therapists whose jobs require less education and licensing. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/10/29/kaiser-mental-health-worker-strike-reaches-second-week/

Several traffic accidents in Fallbrook over the past two days.  A head-on last night after 9p happened on South Mission just south of Green Canyon.  First responders found a vehicle in a ditch with air bags deployed.  Debris was found on the road, but the second vehicle had left the scene.  No word on injuries. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2024/10/24/news/head-on-collision-on-s-mission-ill/77356.html

There was a 3-car collision at South Mission and Ammunition Roads just before 2p Monday.  Nobody was transported for treatment.  https://www.villagenews.com/story/2024/10/24/news/3-car-collision-on-s-mission-and-ammunition/77352.html

And there was a non-injury accident involving a Nissan Leaf and a motorcycle on northbound I-15 just past Highway 76 Monday evening at 6p.  At least one of the vehicles involved was trying to avoid another vehicle that had allegedly made an unsafe lane change. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2024/10/24/news/mc-vs-car-crash-on-the-i15-north/77351.html

SPORTS

In Major League Baseball – The Yankees woke from their three-game slumber and prevented the Dodgers from sweeping this year’s World Series in Game Four in New York last night.  Shortstop Anthony Volpe got the scoring started with a grand slam homer off Dodger relief pitcher Daniel Hudson in the 3rd inning.  That gave the Yankees a lead they would build on including five runs in the 8th inning for a final score of 11-4.  LA’s Freddie Freeman continued his World Series home run streak, once again hitting one over the fence in the first inning last night. Game 5 is today with the Dodgers leading the series three games to one.  No team has ever come back from being three games down to win a World Series.  The Yankees have now won the first of what will have to be four in a row to do it.

In the minors, ground was broken Monday on a new sports complex in south Ontario that will be the home of the Dodgers’ new Single-A farm team, competing against the Padres-affiliated Lake Elsinore Storm.  The Dodgers will continue to be affiliated with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes for one more year.  Then that deal ends and the as-yet-to-be-named new Ontario team deal begins.  You can vote for a name at www.OntarioProfessionalBaseball.com now through November 8.  $151m in construction contracts were approved by the city of Ontario two weeks ago that include an 8k-seat stadium for the new minor league baseball team and 48 other sports fields on 190 acres – an area bigger than Disneyland.  The complex address will be on the south side of Riverside Drive, across from Whispering Lakes Golf Course.  The area, which was home to dairy farms just a couple of years ago, will soon be developed with hundreds of new homes.  https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/10/29/dodgers-franchise-stadium-giant-sports-complex-coming-to-ontario/?utm_email=946A3466143F05F8048025F082&lctg=946A3466143F05F8048025F082&active=no&utm_source=listrak&utm_medium=email&utm_term=https%3a%2f%2fwww.pressenterprise.com%2f2024%2f10%2f29%2fdodgers-franchise-stadium-giant-sports-complex-coming-to-ontario%2f&utm_campaign=scng-pe-localist-eve&utm_content=curated

In the NBA – Just four games last night.  Denver beat the Nets in Brooklyn 144-139 in overtime.  Dallas over Minnesota 120-114.  Sacramento routed the Jazz in Utah 113-96.  And Golden State over the visiting Pelicans 124-106.  Among 11 games tonight, the Lakers are in Cleveland and the Clippers host Portland.

In the NHL – The Kings lost at San Jose last night 4-2.  The Ducks beat the Islanders in New York 3-1.  Other winners included Philadelphia, Seattle, Minnesota, Ottawa and Washington.  Six games tonight including the Kings hosting Vegas.

In Soccer – The LA Galaxy play the Rapids in Colorado on Friday.  LAFC plays the Whitecaps in Vancouver on Sunday.

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were showing modest gains.  The Dow was up a quarter percent.  The S&P was up almost a tenth.  And the Nasdaq was up a small fraction.  Gold traded $17.10 higher on the Comex at $2,798.20 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were up $1.35 a barrel at $68.56.

The latest data proves the economy is expanding at a healthy pace and inflation has now gone below the Federal Reserve goal of 2%.  All of this means the economy has managed to make the soft landing following recession that the Fed has been aiming for with its manipulation of interest rates.  Gross domestic product grew at an annualized rate of 2.8% over the third quarter according to figures released today by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.  That’s solidly in the middle of predictions from various sources. It’s just a tick lower than the 3% during the second quarter.  It only expanded 1.6% in the first quarter, which is below what analysts consider a healthy level of 2 to 3%.  Growth last quarter was mainly driven by consumer spending.  The personal consumption expenditures index – the Fed’s favorite gauge of inflation is now 1 ½%.  That should help ensure an interest rate cut next month.  Even core PCE, without the volatile food and energy sectors is now 2.2% – down from 2.8% in the second quarter. https://www.barrons.com/articles/us-gdp-data-report-release-today-320a288b

US shippers are avoiding East and Gulf Coast ports over worries that the 45k dockworkers at those ports of trade will once again strike if their union doesn’t land a new contract by the January 15 deadline.  The International Longshoremen’s Association labor union and the US Maritime Alliance employer group ended a three-day strike last month with a tentative agreement on wages.  But the sticking point of port automation remains to be resolved. https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-shippers-avoid-east-coast-ports-risk-second-strike-2024-10-30/

According to the National Association of Realtors, sales of previously owned homes jumped the most in more than four years in September thanks to more attractive interest rates and a greater supply of homes on the market.  The Pending Home Sales Index rose 7.4% to 75.8 from 70.6 in August.  It had been at a record-low in July. https://www.reuters.com/markets/us/us-pending-home-sales-jump-most-more-than-four-years-nar-says-2024-10-30/

The S&P Case Schiller Home Price Index shows San Diego is expensive, but not leading the pack on home price increases.  Among the 20 cities surveyed, San Diego is #7 for home appreciation.  New York City leads with 8.1% higher prices over the past year.  Denver and Portland were the worst, just barely gaining anything this past year.   Over time, the picture is quite different.  Seattle had the highest appreciation over the past 20 years at nearly 200%, followed by Dallas at 158% and Portland at 157%.   https://www.bankrate.com/real-estate/case-shiller/#the-fed

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Registration for next year’s San Diego Comic-Con was halted Saturday because of technical issues.  Open registration began online Saturday at 9a, but was stopped after 37 minutes when organizers say there was an “unforeseen anomaly”.  They have not fully revealed what caused the issue and have yet to announce a new date for registration to resume.  Open registration is the last chance for fans to get one of the much sought after four-day badges for the convention that attracts about 130k people each year.  Returning registration for those who bought tickets for last year’s event was held in September.  The 2025 Comic-Con International will be July 24-27.  https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/10/28/san-diego-comic-con-registration-goes-haywire-new-sale-date-to-come/

On this day in music history – October 30,

  • 1961, two days after a fan asked Brian Epstein at his NEMS music store for The Beatles’ German single, “My Bonnie”, a release unknown to him, Epstein solved the mystery and first began to learn about the local Liverpool group.  He couldn’t find the record because it was released under the name Tony Sheridan and The Beat Brothers since “Beatles” resembles a vulgar German slang word and the group so far had only played backup for Sheridan.
  • In 1967, Rolling Stones guitarist Brian Jones admitted to possession of cannabis and allowing his apartment to be used for its smoking, but pleaded not guilty to charges of methamphetamine and cocaine possession.  The plea was accepted and Jones was sentenced to nine months in prison.  He was released on bail the following day.
  • On the same day Tyrannosaurus Rex recorded an episode of “Top Gear” for Radio 1 in England – the first group without a recording contract to ever do that.
  • In 1970, Elton John released his third album, “Tumbleweed Connection”.
  • On the same day Hotlegs made their live debut opening for The Moody Blues at the Festival Hall in London.  Members of the group went on to become 10cc.

  • In 1971, John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band were at #1 with the album “Imagine” which contained two songs attacking Paul McCartney for whom Lennon blamed for the breakup of The Beatles.  The songs were “How Do You Sleep” and “Crippled Inside”.
  • On the same day, Pink Floyd released their 6th studio album, “Meddle” which contained the tracks “One of These Days” and the 23-minute “Echoes” which took up all of side 2.
  • In 1978, Blondie released their second single, “Hanging on the Telephone”
  • In 1982, Men At Work were at #1 on the singles chart with “Who Can It Be Now” – the video for which was in high rotation on MTV.
  • In 1998, all four original members of Black Sabbath reunited for one night to play “Paranoid” on The David Letterman Show.
  • In 2000, a web site was launched to get children interested in basic physics. BritneySpears.ac features photos of the then-popular singer … illustrating mathematical equations and physics theories, obviously.
  • In 2002 Jam Master Jay from Run-DMC was killed by an assassin’s bullet at his recording studio in Queens.
  • In 2015, Adele was at #1 with “Hello” the first track on her third album “25”. The track was streamed 7.3m times in its first week of release, breaking a record previously held by Justin Bieber.
