LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
Tonight, it’s trick-or-treating for kids everywhere. Law enforcement agencies and others are taking steps and making recommendations for trick or treating this evening. In Menifee, more officers will be on patrol. The National Traffic Highway Safety Administration advises pedestrians to stay in lit areas and on sidewalks, and only cross at intersections – never in the middle of the street. Avoid dark colored costumes and wear something reflective or carry a flashlight or glow stick. Make up is better than masks, which limit vision. Motorists should be more watchful than usual for an increased number of pedestrians, drive slower and be especially careful at intersections and when backing out of driveways. https://patch.com/california/murrieta/rivco-halloween-safety-tips-revelers-trick-or-treaters
With literal tons of candy being distributed tonight, tomorrow is the start of the annual candy buy-back program by The Super Dentists franchises in Oceanside, Escondido and four other locations in San Diego County. They’re giving a dollar for every pound of candy turned in through November 8. Since 2004, Super Dentists have collected more than 20k pounds of candy, which then gets donated to active-duty military. https://patch.com/california/oceanside-camppendleton/super-dentists-host-candy-buy-back-program-oceanside
A GoFundMe account has been up since Sunday for the family of Adam Bouvet, who died following a traffic accident in Dallas last week. Bouvet was co-owner of The Mill Restaurant, one of the oldest businesses in Old Town Murrieta. He was struck by a vehicle while walking with family members. His wife, Tracy wrote that she was knocked down in the incident and believes that Adam’s actions saved his family’s lives. The GoFundMe page was set up while he was hospitalized with what was described as severe brain damage. The fund is about two thirds of the way to its $200k goal. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/10/30/adam-bouvet-co-owner-of-the-mill-restaurant-in-murrieta-dies-in-texas-accident/
Interfaith Community Services held its annual meeting with volunteers, donors and community members last night to talk about what’s working and what’s needed to help those who are unhoused. This year, the homeless service provider also invited North County officials to take part in the discussion at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Escondido. In attendance for the first time were elected officials from Escondido, Carlsbad, San Marcos and Oceanside. San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones said her city is providing rental assistance and case management to those on the brink of losing their housing. Oceanside City Councilmember Eric Joyce says homelessness doesn’t know borders, and North County cities must work together. Over the past 2 ½ years, the Regional Task Force on Homelessness has counted more people becoming unhoused for the first time compared to those who are being rehoused in San Diego county. https://www.kpbs.org/news/quality-of-life/2024/10/30/north-county-leaders-gather-to-discuss-homeless-solutions

SPORTS
In Major League Baseball – Not counting Freddie Freeman’s game-ending grand slam homer in Game One, yesterday’s Game Five was the most excitement this World Series has seen. Over the years, the Yankees and Dodgers have met in the World Series a dozen times and usually, it’s the Yankees who win. But not this year. The Dodgers overcame a five-run deficit, used seven pitchers including Walker Buehler, normally a starting pitcher in his first relief appearance in six years, to win last night 7-6. Last night began with New York building on the previous night’s victory, getting five runs on three homers and a single in the first three innings. LA clawed back with five runs in the 5th – all on base hits and a sacrifice fly, only to fall behind in the bottom half on a sacrifice fly by Yankees designated hitter, Giancarlo Stanton. An 8th inning sacrifice fly by Gavin Lux scored Hernandez and yet another sacrifice fly, this time by Mookie Betts put the Dodgers ahead for the first time. The Dodger bullpen held off the Yankees for two more at-bats and it ended in a victory for LA, winning the series four games to one over the Yankees. It’s the Dodgers’ eighth World Series title in franchise history and the first since the Covid-shortened 2020 season when they didn’t even get to have a victory parade. Before that, you have look back to 1988 when Kirk Gibson hit his equally iconic homer. Tomorrow, the Dodgers hold their victory parade on the day Fernando Valenzuela would have been 64 had he not passed last week. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/42103781/dodgers-win-world-series-wild-comeback-game-5
In the NFL – Week 9 begins tonight with Houston at New York on Prime Video. This year’s trade deadline is Tuesday.
In college football – Sources told ESPN on Tuesday that coach-to-coach wireless communications for all Power 4 college games this season have been on unencrypted frequencies. Texas Tech requested a report from the Big 12 on the subject. Today, the report from the Big 12 is that none of the games were compromised, even though it was possible for someone with a scanner and knowledge of how to locate frequencies could have accessed those private coaches’ communications. It further stated that all Big 12 helmet communications now have the update from provider, GSC to encrypt transmissions. Schools that had complained were under the impression that the security feature was already there, same as in the NFL. https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/42114359/big-12-says-no-games-compromised-unsecure-helmet-comms
In the NBA – The Lakers and Clippers both lost. Last night’s winners were Charlotte, Cleveland, Indiana, Detroit, Washington, New York, Chicago, Brooklyn, Oklahoma City, Golden State and Portland. The Clippers host Phoenix tonight along with three other games.
In the NHL – Six games last night. The winners were the Kings, Columbus, Winnipeg, Tampa Bay, Utah, and New Jersey. The Ducks are at Pittsburgh tonight.
In Soccer – The LA Galaxy play the Rapids in Colorado on Friday. LAFC plays the Whitecaps in Vancouver on Sunday.
In golf – There’s tournament opening today in Cabo San Lucas. No first round information is available.

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down across the board. The Dow fell a half percent. Microsoft led the retreat. The S&P 500 was off by 1.4%. And the Nasdaq declines 2 ¼%. Gold fell as well, down almost $49 an ounce on the Comex at $2,752. Oil futures gained a little. West Texas Intermediate Crude was up 51 cents a barrel to $69.12.
The Commerce Department released the latest Personal Consumption Expenditures price index this morning. It’s the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge. It shows prices up 2.1% for the year ended in September. That’s a decline from 2.3% at the end of August and a three and a half year low. The Fed has targeted 2%. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/31/economy/us-pce-inflation-fed-spending-september/index.html
The latest Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report hits tomorrow morning about the time the stock market opens and is the last component the Fed will consider regarding interest rate cuts next month. Though it should have been good news, it’s expected to be distorted by the dock workers’ strike and Hurricane Helene, making September the last “clean” report before the Fed’s rate decision. (CNBC)
Have you ever heard the phrase, “Monopoly money”, referring to the pastel-colored currency notes included with the board game? That’s pretty much the game Russia is playing with Google in the media today. They’re claiming Google owes the Kremlin two … what? Mega-gazillion rubles … a two followed by 36 zeroes. It’s actually around $20 billion trillion trillion. That’s many, many times the size of the $110 trillion global economy. Russian media is reporting that a court there had ordered Google to restore YouTube channels which have been blocked since 2022. This latest claim is for the original amount plus penalties, which double every week. A Kremlin spokesman says the unpronounceable sum is “filled with symbolism”. It had better be, or someone’s had too much vodka. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/31/tech/google-fines-russia/index.html

Starbucks is going retro to win back customers. New CEO Brian Niccol said in yesterday’s quarterly earnings call that baristas will once again handwrite customers’ names and little messages on their drink order with a Sharpie. He quipped that now the company needs to track down about 200k Sharpies, which isn’t as simple as a trip to Staples. Starting next week, customers will no longer pay more for non-dairy milk in their drinks, saving them about 10%. Non-dairy milk is the second most popular order modification at Starbucks behind adding a shot of espresso. The company will be cutting back on promotional discounts to position itself as a premium brand that doesn’t need them. It will also eliminate the controversial olive oil-infused drinks sometime next month to simplify what Niccols calls an “overly complex” menu. https://www.wxow.com/news/starbucks-is-going-retro-to-make-customers-feel-welcome-again/article_ce4286d5-6914-5a28-b727-c8519607b816.html
Brinker International, the parent company of casual dining chain, Chili’s just reported a 14% jump in same-store sales and a 6 ½% increase in traffic thanks to menu items that are going viral on TikTok. Chili’s $10.99 Big Smasher burger combo, $6 margaritas, and Triple Dipper combination platters are winning guests away from fast food chains where some deluxe burgers are pushing $8 or more. The Big Smasher, introduced to Chili’s in April is advertised as having twice the beef of a Big Mac and includes fries, bottomless chips and salsa, and a non-alcoholic drink with unlimited refills. The promotion has been so successful, it’s been extended through next year. Shares in Brinker are up 150% this year. https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/30/food/chilis-earnings/index.html
On this day in music history – October 31,
- 1952, St. Louis bandleader Johnnie Johnson hired 26-year old Chuck Berry as a guitarist in his band. Berry kept his day job as a hairdresser for three more years.
- In 1959, The Quarry Men changed their name to Johnny and the Moondogs to audition for a show in Liverpool. The group featured future Beatles, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison.
- Exactly four years later in 1963, The Beatles returned to London from their first overseas concert tour in Sweden to hundreds of screaming fans and a mob of photographers and reporters at Heathrow Airport. TV host Ed Sullivan was catching a flight there and witnessed the event, which convinced him to get the group on his show. It would be almost two more months before the first Beatles hits broke on American radio, and four months until their first appearance on the Sullivan show.
- In 1964, The Supremes began a four week stay at #1 with the single, “Baby Love” – the second of five consecutive #1 hits for the group
- On the same day, Ray Charles was arrested at the airport in Boston and charged with possession of heroin. It was his third drug charge, following incidents in 1958 and 1961. He avoided a prison sentence by entering rehab in LA, then spending a year on parole in 1966.
- In 1969, David Bowie performed “Space Oddity” for a Halloween event in Gravesend, England. After the song, he proceeded to read poems from a book and was booed off stage.
- In 1970, Led Zeppelin began the first of four weeks at #1 on the album chart with “Led Zeppelin III”.
- In 1974, Led Zeppelin held a launch party for their new record label, Swan Song. The party was extreme – which is saying a lot for a band known for excesses.
- In 1986, Roger Waters went to Britain’s high court to try and stop David Gilmour and Nick Mason from using the name Pink Floyd for future touring and recording.
- In 1990, in a round of pranks between concert tour-mates, Billy Idol dumped 600 dead fish in Faith No More’s dressing room. They retaliated by walking on stage during Idol’s set … naked.
- In 1993, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist, Flea was there when actor, River Phoenix had his fatal collapse in LA.
- In 1996, Slash announced he was quitting Guns N’ Roses. He and Axl Rose had only barely been civil to each other for two years.
- In 2004, R. Kelly was kicked off a tour with Jay-Z one day after claiming he was attacked with pepper spray by a member of the rapper’s entourage. Jay-Z’s publicist denied it. The two were in the middle of a 40-city joint tour.
- In 2005, the white suit worn by John Lennon on the cover of The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” album sold at auction for $188k. Some of the proceeds went to Amnesty International.
- In 2013, Marvin Gaye’s family sued Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams for copyright infringement over their song, “Blurred Lines” for use of elements from Gaye’s “Got To Give It Up”.
