There was a house fire in Vista at 245 W Bobier Dr. last night around 1:15a. On arrival deputies located the uber eats driver who reported the fire attempting to pull the residents out of a bedroom window. Efforts to protect the troubled rail corridor between San Diego and Los Angeles by stabilizing the eroding beach and bluffs in San Clemente got a $100 million boost this week from a new round of federal grants. The project is one of 12 in California receiving a total of $278 million from the Department of Transportation’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements Grants Program. Nationwide, the grants amounted to more than $2.4 billion. The coastal corridor is San Diego’s only railroad connection to Los Angeles and the rest of the United States. In addition to North County Transit District’s Coaster commuter train, the route is used by Amtrak, Metrolink, BNSF Freight and other carriers. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/11/01/orange-county-gets-100-million-to-protect-rail-line-that-serves-san-diego/

This is the weekend we set our clocks back an hour to return to standard time for the fall and winter. It officially happens at 2a Sunday when the time becomes 1a, giving you an extra hour of sleep with the sun seemingly coming up an hour earlier and setting an hour earlier starting Sunday. Best advice is to set clocks back an hour before you go to bed. Or if not, just remember that on Sunday morning the time on your phone and computer is correct and most of your other clocks are not. Hawai’i and most of Arizona do not have daylight savings time. Parts of Arizona that are in the Navajo nation do. Because of that, clocks in California and Arizona have been the same for the past seven months. Now that we’re on standard time in California and the rest of the Pacific Time zone, Arizona, being in the Mountain Time zone will be one hour ahead of us for the next five months. Confused yet? That’s one of the reasons there’s debate every year at high levels over making daylight savings time permanent everywhere in the U.S. For now, if you’re here in Pala, just remember to “fall back” an hour when you get up Sunday morning.
It’ll be nice again today, but a little cooler and cloudier tomorrow in Pala. And we’ll likely be starting the return of standard time with rain. The full forecast is coming up. (below)
Mass at Pala Mission Church is broadcast live on Rez Radio 91.3 and streamed live on the Rez Radio App every Sunday at 8a. It may not be possible to broadcast mass some weeks between now and November due to staffing issues.
SPORTS
In the NFL – Last night, the Jets beat the visiting Houston Texans 21-13. Although Houston scored first, the Jets came back in the 2nd quarter and owned the second half in spite of possessing the ball five fewer minutes, getting four less first downs and 30 fewer yards than the Texans. Sunday’s games include the Chargers at Cleveland at 10a. The Rams are at Seattle at 1p.
In college football – San Diego State is at #15 Boise State tonight. Saturday’s biggest game is also its first – #3 Penn State hosting #4 Ohio State at 9a on Fox.
In the NBA – Phoenix beat the Clippers 124-119. Devin Booker was high scorer in the league last night at 40 points. Other winners were Memphis, Houston, and San Antonio. The Lakers are at Toronto tonight. The Clippers host Oklahoma City tomorrow.
In the NHL – Pittsburgh beat the visiting Ducks 2-1 in overtime. Other winners were Toronto, Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina, Edmonton, and San Jose.
In Major League Baseball – After a night of over-celebration in LA in which a city bus was torched and a number of street gatherings were broken up by riot squads, Los Angeles got down to organized celebration of the Dodgers’ World Series victory with a downtown parade this morning at 11a. It began near City Hall and ended near the intersection of 5th and Flower Street. It was a ticketed event with thousands of fans lining the streets as early as 7a this morning to get a good spot. A small crowd of fans hanging around Dodger Stadium got a thrill earlier this morning as a half dozen open air double decker buses carrying the Dodger players exited the stadium on their way to the parade escorted by LAPD SWAT teams and the CHP. Though this wasn’t the first Dodger victory in the World Series this millennium, it was the first one that could be celebrated since 1988. The only other time was in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. https://abc7.com/live-updates/dodgers-parade-in-downtown-los-angeles-celebrates-world-series-win/15494063/

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were up. The Dow gained 8 tenths of a percent. Amazon led the charge. The S&P 500 was up two thirds. And the Nasdaq gained almost a full percent. Comex gold fell $4.10 an ounce to $2,745.20. And the benchmark, West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures were up 38 cents to $69.64 a barrel.
The final jobs report before the election was released today and it was bad … but with a silver lining. According to the Labor Department, only 12k jobs were added last month – a small fraction of what would normally be considered healthy. But that number was tainted by the East and Gulf Coast dockworkers’ strike and Hurricane Helene, which devastated parts of the same area. Even the election itself can skew jobs numbers in the days leading up to it as employers hedge their bets by not hiring until they know what’s ahead from the new administration. Because of those mitigating factors, 10-year Treasury notes, which might normally take a hit from such news, continue to rise today. https://www.marketwatch.com/
The annual contribution limit for employees participating in 401(k), 403(b), government 457 plans and the federal government’s Thrift Savings Plan was just increased for 2025. It’s now $23,500 – up $500 from the current limit. The annual contribution limit for an IRA remains at $7,000 except for workers over age 50 who can contribute $8,000. https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/401k-limit-increases-to-23500-for-2025-ira-limit-remains-7000#:~:text=Highlights%20of%20changes%20for%202025,to%20an%20IRA%20remains%20%247%2C000.
During yesterday’s earnings call, Wendy’s announced it will close another 140 locations this year, calling them “outdated” and underperforming with plans to replace them at more profitable locations with the potential for about twice the sales per location as the ones that’ll close. According to a spokesperson, there will be a similar number of new stores, so net unit growth will be roughly flat for 2024. It was noted that Wendy’s has already built about 500 new stores in the past two years. As of the end of September, there were a total of 7,166 Wendy’s restaurants worldwide including 6,010 in the U.S. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/food/2024/10/31/wendys-restaurant-closures-new-locations/75970726007/

Launched in September, the actual flavor of Mountain Dew VooDew for this Halloween was revealed by PepsiCo today as it always does on November 1. It’s pink fruit candy, as if that fully explains it. The limited time flavor will continue on store shelves for a few more weeks. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/food/2024/11/01/mountain-dew-voodew-2024-mystery-flavor-revealed/75991222007/
Today is the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. But this year, if you’re on time, you’re too late. Stores have been pushing harder than ever this year for customers to shop early for upcoming holidays and events. Halloween hit shelves in early August. Christmas and Hanukkah decorations have been available since September. And after getting fooled a couple of times since the pandemic with supply chain problems, stores are planning further ahead and aren’t over-ordering, meaning if you don’t shop early, you might find stores have moved on to the next holiday, leaving you limited options. It used to be that the holiday shopping season began the day after Halloween … today. Amazon has effectively moved that up with its Prime Deal Days in October. Online is expected to grow at the fastest rate since 2021, even though many families are looking to limit expenses or have a more constrained budget than usual. Shopping early can help spread out purchases that tend to gang up at the end of the year. But psychology experts say the early urgency for holiday shopping only contributes to holiday shopping stress and tends to make a person spend more than they might otherwise trying to cover all bases along with the fear of missing out. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/retail/2024/10/31/holiday-shopping-retail-stress/75842840007/
On this day in music history – November 1,
- 1955, The Famous Flames, led by James Brown cut their first demo of “Please, Please, Please” at a radio station in Macon, Georgia. It led to their first recording contract with King Records.
- In 1956, Elvis Presley bought a new Harley Davidson and spent the day riding around Memphis on it … with actress Natalie Wood. It’s good to be King.
- In 1968, George Harrison released his first solo album, “Wonderwall Music” on the Apple label. The songs were mostly instrumentals and included an uncredited banjo contribution from Peter Tork of The Monkees
- In 1969, The Beatles final original album became their 13th to hit #1 in the U.S. Two of “Abbey Road’s” biggest hits were songs by George Harrison – “Something” & “Here Comes the Sun”. The album cover supposedly contained multiple clues that added to the “Paul is Dead” rumor. Namely, the way the four were dressed – John in a white suit representing the priest, Ringo in black as the undertaker, George in denim shirt as the gravedigger, and Paul as the corpse being barefoot. Also, the license plate on the Volkswagen Beetle in the background … LMW 28IF, supposedly meaning Linda McCartney Weeps and 28 if (he were still alive). It seems Beatles fans weren’t very good at math. Paul was 27 when the album was released.
- On the same day, Elvis Presley was at #1 on the singles chart with “Suspicious Minds”, his 18th #1 hit.
- In 1975, Elton John began the first of three weeks at #1 on the singles chart with “Island Girl” about a New York City prostitute and the Jamaican man who wants to take her back to Jamaica.
- In 1990, session musician and member of The Wrecking Crew, Ray Pohlman died of heart failure at age 60. He’s credited with being the first electric bass player in LA studios in the 1950s.
- In 2004, former manager for Grand Funk Railroad, Terry Knight was stabbed to death in his home in Texas. He’d been defending his daughter during a domestic disturbance with her boyfriend.
- In 2008, drummer and singer Jimmy Carl Black died. He’d been a member of The Mothers of Invention and worked with Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, The Grateful Dead and The Turtles.
- In 2015, Taylor Swift was sued by R&B singer Jesse Braham who claimed Swift stole the lyrics for her 2014 hit, “Shake It Off” from his 2013 song “Haters Gone Hate”.
Born on this day …
- In 1940, soldier, singer and songwriter Sgt. Barry Sadler, best known for his 1966 #1 hit “Ballad of the Green Berets” – one of the few patriotic songs to come out of the Viet Nam War.
- In 1946, Rick Grech from Blind Faith, Traffic and Ginger Baker’s Air Force.
- In 1947, composer, lyricist and record producer Jim Steinman, whose work included Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell albums, Bonnie Tyler’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and Air Supply’s “Making Love Out of Nothing at All”.
- In 1949, producer, composer and arranger David Foster
- In 1951, Ronald Bell from Kool & The Gang
- In 1954, Chris Morris, guitarist from Paper Lace who had a 1974 #1 hit with “The Night Chicago Died”
- In 1957, country singer Lyle Lovett
- In 1962, lead singer and co-founder of Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis
- In 1963, Rick Allen, drummer for Def Leppard
- In 1981, LaTavia Roberson from Destiny’s Child
