LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
Tomorrow is Election Day. Even though a high percentage of voters have already returned their ballots either by mail or at a designated drop-off point, many still remain to be cast. Here are details for dropping off, voting in person, and even last-minute registration to vote. Over 200 voting centers in San Diego County were open for business as of Saturday including Pala’s at Old Tribal Hall. Hours today are 8a to 5p. Tomorrow – the final day to vote, all centers and drop off points will be open 7a to 8p. There are six of what the country Registrar of Voters call “super centers”. They include the San Marcos Community Center on Civic Center Drive. Super centers have additional check-in stations, voting booths and poll workers. A voter can go to any voting center or drop off location anywhere in the county in which they’re registered. However, as an example, a voter with a registered address in San Diego County cannot vote in Riverside County, except to drop their mail ballot at a US Post Office there and vice versa. Mailed ballots must be postmarked no later than tomorrow. Secure, ballot drop-off locations that bypass the mail are available at dozens of additional locations. For those, you can only use the locations in the county in which you live. The deadline for drop off is 8p, same as at voting centers. For those locations and all voting information, voters in San Diego County should go to www.SDVote.com and for Riverside County voters – www.VoteInfo.net . A reminder that campaigning or electioneering within 100 feet of a voting center or ballot drop location is illegal. Additional details are available at the County News Center at the following link. https://www.countynewscenter.com/over-200-vote-centers-available-saturday-2/
As of yesterday, more than 48% of the total number of people nationwide who voted in the 2020 presidential election have already cast their ballots in the 2024 race. It seems the Covid-era shift to early and mail-in voting has become the “new normal,” and that Election Day simply marks the end of voting. Some states have seen massive early voting turnout. In swing states North Carolina and Georgia, about 80% of the state’s total electorate in 2020 have already voted. Early voting rates were still higher in the pandemic-disrupted election four years ago, when around 100 million people voted early. Over 75 million have already done so this year. www.morningbrew.com
Keira Trujillo, the 16-year-old girl with connections to Pala who had been missing and was the subject of a CHP Feather Alert for the past two weeks, was located safe and taken into custody on Friday, according to Tony Campbell from AC Investigations. He reported that Trujillo was to be turned over to her mother, who lives in the Henderson, Nevada area. She’d first been reported as missing to the Valley Center Sheriff’s substation on October 17 https://www.villagenews.com/story/2024/10/31/news/keira-trujillo-found-safe-in-henderson-nevada/77386.html
The driver of one vehicle suffered significant injuries in a two-car crash this morning on southbound I-15 just past Main Street in Lake Elsinore. It happened shortly before 6 a.m. CHP and Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department responded to the scene where a black Infiniti Q60 collided with a white Toyota Camry. The Infiniti ended up over the side of the road, down an embankment, on its roof. Speed, not alcohol, was considered a factor in the crash. www.Patch.com

Though they might temporarily tick up with tomorrow’s election returns, sales of booze are down. Some of the world’s biggest alcoholic beverage makers have recently had declines in volumes or sales or both as customers push back against higher prices. Overall alcohol consumption volume fell 3% for the first seven months of this year. All major categories were affected including beer, wine, American whiskey and tequila. The only bright spot was canned cocktails – up 2%, and private labels. Discount food retailer Aldi says its private label alcohol sales are up by double digits this year. Part of that can be explained by Aldi’s overall increasing share in the grocery sector. Experts say the overall downward trend is actually only a normalization of the boost alcohol sales got during the pandemic. https://www.wsiltv.com/news/consumer/drinkers-are-pushing-back-on-expensive-booze/article_9c86fd0e-b36c-56e4-8cb9-1b988aff2d23.html
Dallas-based TGIFridays filed for bankruptcy protection in Texas federal court on Saturday. Company Chairman Rohit Manocha said the primary reason was the pandemic and the company’s capital structure. The chain hit its peak in 2008 with 601 US restaurants. There are now just 163 Fridays in this country. Only 39 of them are company-owned. There are 461 franchised in 41 other countries. Only the company-owned stores are part of the Chapter 11 filing. All 11 Dallas-Fort Worth Friday’s locations are now closed. In Southern California, the only locations still open are in Orange and LA Counties. https://dallas.culturemap.com/news/restaurants-bars/tgi-fridays-bankruptcy-dfw-airport/

Composer and music producer Quincy Jones died over the weekend. Growing up running with gangs on Chicago’s South Side, Jones rose to become a major part of Hollywood, scoring dozens of movies and working with artists from Frank Sinatra to Michael Jackson. In his early years he toured with Count Basie and Lionel Hampton, arranged music for Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, and composed the soundtrack for the breakthrough 1967 Sidney Poitier film “In the Heat of the Night”. Jones wrote the 1973 theme song for TV’s “Sanford and Son”, “The Streetbeater” which became a hit single. In 1985, he oversaw the all-star recording of the charity record for famine relief, “We Are the World”. He produced Michael Jackson’s three biggest albums, “Off the Wall”, “Thriller” and “Bad”, transforming Jackson into the “King of Pop”. Jones won 28 Grammys, an honorary Oscar, and an Emmy for the soundtrack to TV’s “Roots” mini-series. He was to have received another honorary Academy Award later this month. These are just a few of Jones’ long list of accomplishments. He was the subject of a 1990 documentary and another by his daughter, Rashida Jones in 2018.
