LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
SDG&E has put much of North County and inland San Diego County on notice for the possibility of Public Safety Power Shutoffs today and for the duration of the current National Weather Service Red Flag Warning for high winds and extreme low humidity. Pala, Pauma, Rincon, San Pasqual, La Jolla, Mesa Grande, Los Coyotes and Santa Ysabel are included in areas that could get PSPS’s. In East County, PSPS’s are already active in Campo, Live Oak Springs, Boulevard and Jacumba. This includes the area around Golden Acorn Casino. https://www.sdge.com/psps-dashboard
Donald Trump has become the second President to have ever been defeated for reelection, then come back to win a second nonconsecutive term. The only other one is Grover Cleveland, the first Democrat elected after the Civil War. He was our 22nd President in 1885 and our 24th in 1893. Trump will now be our 47th President after having been #45 in 2016. As of early this morning, he had 7 more than the necessary 270 electoral votes, thanks to winning most of the so-called battleground or swing states, including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Georgia. As of 10a, Michigan, Arizona and Nevada were too close to call, but Trump was leading all three. Trump made his victory speech late last evening, long before it was official. Opponent, Kamala Harris made her concession speech at about 11a this morning. https://www.usatoday.com/elections/results/2024-11-05/president?itm_source=oembed&itm_medium=news&itm_campaign=front&itm_content=presidential-general
Closer to home, Democrat Adam Schiff easily defeated Republican Steve Garvey for Diane Feinstein’s former Senate seat. But nationwide, this time around, Trump will have the added advantage of a Republican Senate majority. A pair of Eastern state Senate seats flipped to Republican. A possible change is still too close to call for the House of Representatives. Darrell Issa won easy reelection as California 48th District U.S. Representative. Less than a percentage point separated 41st district candidates Ken Calvert and Will Rollins with Calvert leading as of the 5a Riverside Registrar results update. Among California propositions, #2 for school bonds was almost 57% “yes”. Prop 3, the Constitutional right to marriage was an easy winner. Prop 4 to issue climate change bonds was winning with almost 58% “yes”. Prop 6 to lower the Super Majority need to pass local bonds was defeated. Prop 32 to raise the minimum wage failed. Prop 33 to expand local rent control was resoundingly defeated. Prop 34 to restrict prescription revenue spending for providers was 51 ½% “yes”. Prop 35, regarding Medi-Cal Funds via managed health care tax won 2 to 1. And Prop 36 to increase drug and theft penalties passed by a landslide. Oceanside Measure X to continue the half-cent sales tax added in 2018 easily passed. Escondido’s one-cent sales tax hike got almost a 60% “yes” vote. Bonsall schools’ bond Measure V was defeated. Fallbrook High School district bond Measure BB was defeated. Valley Center-Pauma school district’s Measure SS bond was defeated. Warner Unified district Measure TT bond issue was approved.
Pala’s Eric Ortega won reelection to the Bonsall school board representing District E. In the hotly contested Temecula Valley school board District 4 election, Joseph Komrosky had a narrow 200-vote lead over David Sola. Komrosky had been removed from that office in a special recall election earlier this year.
Those were just some of the highlights of yesterday’s election. Here’s the link for election results updates from the Riverside County Registrar of Voters. https://voteinfo.net/november-5-2024-election
Here’s the link for election results updates from the San Diego County Registrar of Voters. https://www.livevoterturnout.com/ENR/sandiegocaenr/20/en/Index_20.html
When reading results from these two sites, keep in mind that some districts cross county lines, and that the results on each site are for that county only. It’s possible for the actual outcome of statewide offices, ballot measures and offices with districts crossing county lines to be different when all votes for that candidate or measure are added together.
A reminder that Pala tribal elections are coming up in two weeks on November 19.
A National Weather Service Wind Advisory and Red Flag Warning for dangerous wildfire conditions is in effect for Pala and most of inland Southern California. The full forecast is coming up. (below)
Mass at Pala Mission Church is broadcast live on Rez Radio 91.3 and streamed live on the Rez Radio App every Sunday at 8a. It may not be possible to broadcast mass some weeks between now and November due to staffing issues.
SPORTS
In the NFL – Mondays’ final Week 9 game was an exciting one. Kansas City topped the Colts in Indianapolis 30-24 in overtime. Patrick Mahomes completed 291 yards passing with three touchdowns. But the game winner came on a two-yard run by Kareem Hunt with four minutes left in OT. The stats were overwhelmingly in KC’s favor. But they did commit the game’s only turnover. Week 10 begins tomorrow with Cincinnati at Baltimore.
In college football – In the AP Top 25, Oregon is #1, followed by Ohio State, Georgia and Miami. Oregon, Miami and #25 Army are the only remaining undefeated teams. Under Shildt, the Padres were 93 and 69 this year – an 11-game improvement over the previous season under Bob Melvin. San Diego finished just five games behind the eventual World Series champion Dodgers and went to the playoffs as the top National League Wild Card. They had an especially strong August and September, with 34 wins against 18 losses. The Padres tied for first in the majors with a .263 batting average. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/42231144/padres-give-manager-mike-shildt-two-year-extension

Donald Trump’s impending return to the White House has economists expecting fewer and shallower interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve. Planned economic policies under Trump are expected to juice the economy and slow or even reverse the slowdown in inflation. The Fed is still expected to cut rates a quarter percent this month to 4.5% and another quarter percent next month. But investors are betting the rate cuts will stop in the middle of next year with the prime lending rate in the 3.75% to 4% range. A month ago, the expected target was under 3%. https://www.reuters.com/markets/rates-bonds/federal-reserve-seen-shallower-rate-cut-path-after-trumps-election-2024-11-06/
One area of stocks that declined today was vehicle manufacturing. Due to the international makeup of modern auto making, even US-based companies are expecting difficulties under tariffs proposed by the incoming Trump administration. https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/bmw-downplays-fears-over-us-tariffs-trump-election-win-2024-11-06/

On this day in music history – November 6,
- 1961, Jimmy Dean … that’s right, the sausage guy … began the first of five weeks at #1 with “Big Bad John”. He later went on to host a TV variety show and appear in various movies including the James Bond feature “Diamonds are Forever”.
- In 1965, the Rolling Stones got their second #1 hit with “Get Off of My Cloud”. It replaced The Beatles’ “Yesterday” at #1.
- In 1967, Bob Dylan recorded “All Along the Watchtower” during a three-hour session in Nashville. Jimi Hendrix recorded his version 2 ½ months later.
- In 1968, The Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane played the opening night of San Francisco’s “Fillmore West”.
- On the same day, The Monkees’ feature film “Head” opened in New York City. Instead of catering to its core teeny-bopper audience, the film had a dark theme about manipulation of the group and quick cuts of Vietnam war atrocities that didn’t match the group’s image. Reviews were harsh and what had been hoped would be the American equivalent of “A Hard Day’s Night” turned into a box office bomb.
- In 1970, Aerosmith played their first gig ever at a high school in Mendon, Massachusetts.
- In 1971, Cher began a two-week run at #1 with “Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves” – her first #1 hit without Sonny.
- In 1976, the Steve Miller Band was at #1 with “Rock ‘n’ Me”.
- In 1982, Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes were at #1 for three weeks with “Up Where We Belong”, from the soundtrack to the movie “An Officer and a Gentleman”.
- In 2000, Madonna did her first concert in eight years with a 20 minute set at New York’s Roseland Ballroom.
- Exactly five years later, she scored her 36th top ten single with “Hung Up”. That equaled the record held by Elvis Presley for most top ten singles. It was also her 47th top 40 single – the most by any female artist at that time.
- In 2014, Taylor Swift’s album “1989” debuted at #1 and sold 1.3m copies the first week – the most of anyone since Eminem twelve years earlier. Swift is the only act to have three separate million download weeks.
- In 2019, cellist Hugh McDowell died of cancer at age 65. He’d become part of the original live performance lineup of ELO when he was 19.
Born on this day …
- In 1942, Doug Sahm, leader of the Sir Douglas Quintet.
- In 1948, Glenn Frey from the Eagles.
- In 1964, Corey Glover, lead singer with Living Colour.
