Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland died this morning of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.  He reportedly led Frisco Police on a high-speed chase in that city late last evening.  The vehicle crashed with Kneeland fleeing the scene on foot.  His body was found about three hours later.  Kneeland was a second-round draft pick by the Cowboys in 2024.  He’d scored their first touchdown in Monday’s loss to Arizona.  He was 24.    https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46869849/cowboys-second-year-de-marshawn-kneeland-dies-24

In college football – #19 USC will be the first team from the AP Top 25 to play in Week 11.  The Trojans host Northwestern tomorrow night at the LA Memorial Coliseum.

Sacramento’s Russell Westbrook made NBA history last night with his 204th career triple-double.  Last night he had 23 points, 16 rebound and ten assists in the 121-116 win over the Warriors.  That gives him the most rebounds for any player in the guard position at 8,734, surpassing the previous record holder, Jason Kidd.  Westbrook had signed a veteran minimum contract with the Kings at the end of training camp. He had declined his player option with Denver for this season.  https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/46866968/russell-westbrook-vintage-triple-double-gives-kings-win

His last six were with the Padres, ending in 2022.  Since then, he’s been with the front office.  The Padres have made the playoffs three of the past four years.  The Colorado Rockies are now the only team currently without a permanent manager. https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46871539/padres-hire-craig-stammen-3-year-deal-new-manager

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down.  The Dow fell 9 tenths of a percent. Salesforce and Nvidia led the decline.  The S&P 500 was down a full percent.  And the Nasdaq was off by 1.6%.  Gold was flat at $3,993 an ounce.  The benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down 50 cents at $59.10 a barrel.

The Federal Aviation Administration says it is cutting thousands of flights this week due to the federal government shutdown.  Flight capacity will be reduced up to 10% at 40 major airports across the country including San Diego, Los Angeles, and Ontario International Airports.  The flight reductions will be phased-in beginning tomorrow morning.  International flights are exempt from the cuts.  This is an unprecedented move by the FAA and the Department of Transportation, and it’s going to cause disruption for customers’ holiday flight plans.  United Airlines was the first to respond to the situation, saying customers looking for a refund on any flight can get one, even if it’s a basic economy, non-refundable ticket.  https://abcnews.go.com/US/flight-capacity-reduced-10-40-major-airports-faa/story?id=127235525

President Trump today announced deals with Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk to cut prices on some of their obesity drugs, including some still under development.  Prices will be lower on GLP-1 drugs and other treatments through Medicare and Medicaid on the website being launched in January, called TrumpRX.gov.  This will be the first time Medicare has covered obesity drugs for patients. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/06/trump-eli-lilly-novo-nordisk-deal-obesity-drug-prices.html

Drug maker, Eli Lilly announced it will begin late-stage trials of its experimental amylin obesity drug next month.  The weekly injection is said to help patients lose 20% of their body weight within 48 weeks.  It could lead to dominance for Eli Lilly in the weight loss drug market.  Stock in the company had fallen by about one third since March, but is now at a 12-month high and up 155% this year.  https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/06/eli-lilly-amylin-obesity-drug-study-weight-loss-trials.html

Target is rethinking its strategy for online order fulfillment.  It had announced in 2017 that its stores would power the e-commerce side of its business.  One of its main competitors, Amazon used huge fulfillment centers.  Instead, all 2k of Target’s store are its fulfillment centers, with employees picking products and packing boxes in backrooms for shipment to customers.  But that’s led to staff being stretched too thin to maintain the stores to traditional Target standards.  In-store customers have noticed, mentioning sloppier aisles, longer checkout lines, locked-up items and out-of-stock merchandise.  As a result, some Target stores will no longer process online orders.  After a successful pilot project in Chicago, Target has now rolled that plan out to more than half of its 60 metropolitan markets.  The stores that will continue with online fulfillment will be the ones with lower foot traffic or which have plenty of space for packing and shipping.  Though the “stores as hubs” strategy led to a tripling of e-commerce business combined with low overhead during the pandemic, Target’s overall sales have been about flat for the past four years.  The only thing that won’t change under the new plan is that all Target locations will still have curbside and in-store pickup. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/06/target-store-delivery-pickup-ceo-michael-fiddelke.html

The parent company of Outback Steakhouse announced it has closed 21 locations and is not renewing the leases for 22 others over the next four years.  Bloomin’ Brands had closed 41 locations in early 2024 – most of them were Outback Steakhouses.  The company operates a total of 1,450 restaurants including 678 Outback Steakhouses, over 200 Carrabba Italian Grills, 166 Bonefish Grills, and 65 Flemings’s Steakhouses plus 350 restaurants in other countries. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/food/2025/11/06/outback-steakhouse-closings-bloomin-brands/87091579007/

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Next time you see a penny laying on the ground, pick it up for more than just luck.  The U.S. Mint has issued a penny in one form or another ever since 1793 … until this year.  The administration ordered the Treasury Department to stop making them back in May because each penny costs 4 cents to make.  Without any new pennies coming into circulation, the Treasury Department estimated that we’d start running short of pennies sometime early next year.  That turned out to be optimistic.  We’re already running short.  Banks have begun to ration pennies, causing some companies trouble making exact change on transactions.  In some states, they legally have to round down to the nearest nickel when that happens or face lawsuits.  As it turns out, cutting the penny may cost companies a big chunk of change … until they raise prices to compensate. www.morningbrew.com

  • 1951 Frank Sinatra married the second of his four wives, actress Ava Gardner.  They split two years later and divorced in 1957.
  • In 1967, Reg Dwight and song writing partner Bernie Taupin signed with DJM publishing.  Their signatures had to be witnessed by their parents because they were both under 21.  Five years later, Reg legally changed his name to Elton John.
  • On the same day, The Beatles finished recording “Blue Jay Way”, “Flying” and “Magical Mystery Tour”, making a total of six songs available for a double EP.  Capitol records didn’t think the format would be acceptable in the U.S. and instead added five of the Beatles’ six singles released already that year.  The singles made up Side Two of the album “Magical Mystery Tour”.
  • In 1969, the Rolling Stones kicked off their 6th North American Tour.  Also on the bill – Ike and Tina Turner, Chuck Berry and B.B. King.

  • In 2012, one woman died and 19 other people were injured when a scaffolding collapsed in high winds just before a Linkin Park concert in Cape Town, South Africa.  The concert went on as scheduled with the band not told about the death until afterwards.
  • In 2014, Bruce Springsteen offered his acoustic guitar for auction at the Stand Up For Heroes event.  When the bidding hit $60k, he threw in a guitar lesson.  That raised the bidding to $250k, at which point he threw in a lasagna dinner at his home, a ride around the block in the sidecar of his motorcycle and literally, the shirt off his back. Two wealthy fans won the bidding with $300k going to the Bob Woodruff Foundation for returning injured servicemen.
