The National Weather Service Red Flag Warning for dangerous fire conditions in much of Southern California including Pala continues through this evening.  So far, SDG&E’s Public Safety Power Shutoffs have all been in East County, mostly along I-8 and Highway 94, including parts of Potrero, Alpine, Descanso, Buckman Springs, Live Oak Springs, Campo, Jacumba and Boulevard. https://www.sdge.com/residential/customer-service/outage-center/outage-map

Several traffic signals were non-functional along Butterfield Stage and Clinton Keith Roads this morning – possibly due to Public Safety Power Shutoffs in the area involving about 13,500 SoCal Edison customers.  https://patch.com/california/temecula/traffic-signal-outages-temecula-murrieta-amid-power-safety-shutoff

Governor Gavin Newsom has called a special session for lawmakers in Sacramento to safeguard state policies he believes will be threatened under the second Trump Presidency.  They include policies on climate change, reproductive rights, and immigration.  Newsom told The Associated Press that California is ready to “Trump-proof” state laws and is asking the Legislature to give the attorney general’s office more funding to fight expected federal challenges.  Other “blue” states including New York and Illinois are preparing similar game plans.  The US Senate now has a Republican majority.  The balance of power in the House of Representatives will likely not be decided until after a few more days of ballot counting.   https://www.pressenterprise.com/2024/11/07/california-newsom-trump-policies/

With the race for mayor of Oceanside still too close to call as of last evening, Ryan Keim held a narrow lead over incumbent Mayor Esther Sanchez.  It could take until next week before a winner can be declared.  Sanchez, an attorney and former public defender has been on the city council since 2000 and was elected mayor in 2020.  Keim is a former Oceanside police officer who was appointed to a vacant city council seat in 2019 and then elected to a full term in 2020. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/11/06/keim-optimistic-he-will-hold-his-narrow-lead-for-oceanside-mayor/

A pedestrian was struck and killed in Escondido yesterday morning.  The 55-year old man was crossing Via Rancho Parkway near Westfield North County Mall when struck.  Bystanders were giving the man CPR when first responders arrived.  Officers continued treatment, but the unidentified victim died at the scene.  The driver of the vehicle involved remained at the scene.  Neither drugs nor alcohol were believed to be factors. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/11/06/55-year-old-man-struck-killed-by-vehicle-in-escondido/

Morning Brew made some predictions about government changes at the federal level under the new administration beginning next year. Heads of major regulatory commissions who’ve been skeptical of crypto-currencies and championed anti-trust cases are expected to be replaced with officials who are more hands-off and business-friendly.  Elon Musk, whose $130m donations to the Trump campaign through his political action committee will likely buy him a seat at the table posted that Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan will “be fired soon”.  That means easier times ahead for mergers and acquisitions, and a number of investigations into businesses being dropped, including those controlled by Musk – Tesla, SpaceX and X social media.  Executives at TikTok believe the Department of Justice under Trump will choose not to enforce the ban of the app.  Trump has already said he’ll fire Gary Gensler from the Securities and Exchange Commission.  Gensler has fought against crypto-currencies.  But not everything may go big businesses’ way.  The last time Trump was in office, the FTC sued Google for acting as a monopoly, which led to this year’s ruling against the company.  www.morningbrew.com and https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/07/how-elon-musk-stands-to-cash-in-on-trumps-presidential-victory.html

Musk’s investment in the Trump campaign is already paying off.  Shares in Tesla rose 15% yesterday. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/07/how-elon-musk-stands-to-cash-in-on-trumps-presidential-victory.html

Warner Bros. Discovery said early today its Max streaming platform added 7.2m customers worldwide during the third quarter, brining its subscriber base to 110.5m.  That’s the biggest quarterly growth since Max began.  Warner Bros. Discovery stock gained 10% on the news.  Even though overall revenue figures were down compared with a year ago, revenue from streaming increased 8%.  Netflix still leads the sector with 282.7m subscribers.  Disney+ has 118.3m.  Paramount+ had an unexpected profit last quarter in spite of declining subscriber numbers.  It’ll release third quarter numbers tomorrow. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/07/warner-bros-discovery-wbd-earnings-q3-2024.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Apple is asking for staff feedback on potential features for a lightweight alternative to its Vision Pro AR headset – something to compete with Meta’s Ray-Ban collaboration smart glasses.  The Ray-Ban specs enable video recording and voice-activated calls.  Apple is reportedly toying with a similar product that would have built-in Siri, camera, and sound.  Neither of the companies are yet to the point of developing what would eventually kill the smart phone – a wearable that displays information users can interact with. www.morningbrew.com

Many products in drug stores and other retailers are now displayed in locked cases.  And many more will be if new technology being tested by Walmart and CVS is widely adopted.  It’s a system that allows customers to unlock security display cases with their phones.  It’s being tested in a few hundred stores and Walmart is in discussions to roll it out to Walmart+ loyalty members.  CVS is piloting a similar system. Though Indyme, the company that makes the system won’t say who is actually a client and retailers are being cagey on the details, its “Freedom Case” lets shoppers enter their phone number into a touchscreen that gives a code to unlock the security display.  Retailers are scrambling for a fix for retail theft that everybody can live with.  Experts say security cases have deterred shoplifting, but they’ve also cut down on impulse purchasing, created additional work for thinly stretched retail staff, and pushed shoppers towards online purchasing. www.morningbrew.com

On this day in music history – November 7,

  • 1951 Frank Sinatra married the second of his four wives, actress Ava Gardner.  They split two years later and divorced in 1957.
  • In 1967, Reg Dwight and song writing partner Bernie Taupin signed with DJM publishing.  Their signatures had to be witnessed by their parents because they were both under 21.  Five years later, Reg legally changed his name to Elton John.
  • On the same day, The Beatles finished recording “Blue Jay Way”, “Flying” and “Magical Mystery Tour”, making a total of six songs available for a double EP.  Capitol records didn’t think the format would be acceptable in the U.S. and instead added five of the Beatles’ six singles released already that year.  The singles made up Side Two of the album “Magical Mystery Tour”.
  • In 1969, the Rolling Stones kicked off their 6th North American Tour.  Also on the bill – Ike and Tina Turner, Chuck Berry and B.B. King.
  • In 1975, Elton John began the first of three weeks at #1 on the album chart with “Rock of the Westies” which included the #1 hit “Island Girl”, released just before the album.
  • In 1987, Bruce Springsteen’s “Tunnel of Love” album was released.  It went triple-platinum and included one of his biggest singles, “Brilliant Disguise”.
  • In 1991, guitarist Izzy Stradlin quit Guns N’ Roses citing Axl Rose’s personal behavior and difficulties being around the other members now that he was sober.
  • In 2012, one woman died and 19 other people were injured when a scaffolding collapsed in high winds just before a Linkin Park concert in Cape Town, South Africa.  The concert went on as scheduled with the band not told about the death until afterwards.
  • In 2014, Bruce Springsteen offered his acoustic guitar for auction at the Stand Up For Heroes event.  When the bidding hit $60k, he threw in a guitar lesson.  That raised the bidding to $250k, at which point he threw in a lasagna dinner at his home, a ride around the block in the sidecar of his motorcycle and literally, the shirt off his back. Two wealthy fans won the bidding with $300k going to the Bob Woodruff Foundation for returning injured servicemen.
