LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

The 34-year old man with cerebral palsy who was the victim of a hit and run one week ago in Fallbrook has seen the community rally around him.  His bicycle was wrecked by the Mustang that pulled in front of him and then took off on South Main Street.  That driver has yet to be caught.  Meanwhile, Dominique Trent, who was mostly uninjured has been presented with a new e-bike from E-Bike-A-Go-Go store owner Ed Maynard, who’d just repaired Trent’s old bike.  Community members chipped in for the new bike.  Overages will go to a local food bank.  Trent relies on his bike for transportation and is often seen directing traffic and helping customers in the Grocery Outlet / Dollar Tree center where his brother operates a barber shop. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

There was a crash between a motorcycle and a sedan Wednesday afternoon on Margarita Road at Georgetown Lane in Temecula just after 4:15p.  The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital in stable condition.  No other injuries and no arrests were made.  Traffic in the busy area was snarled for about an hour during the afternoon rush. https://patch.com/california/temecula/motorcycle-crash-temecula-disrupts-commuter-traffic

Video surveillance showed two mountain lions visiting the front porch of a home on Salem Court in an Oceanside senior community bordering Camp Pendleton around 3a Wednesday.  The homeowners slept through the incident but found the footage later that morning.  Wildlife experts say mountain lion sightings are common on Camp Pendleton but not in neighborhoods, although one was spotted last year at City Hall and a local theater.  That same animal was believed to be the one killed by a car a few weeks later. https://www.newsbreak.com/abc-10-news-kgtv-563645/4333838323918-two-mountain-lions-caught-on-camera-visiting-oceanside-senior-community

Local residents can trade in their unwanted weapons for gift cards during a gun safety event this weekend at the Vista Courthouse.  The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the city of Vista, Oceanside Police Department, San Diegans for Gun Prevention Violence and San Diego County District Attorney’s Office to get unwanted guns off the streets.  Those who donate handguns, rifles and shotguns will receive $100 gift cards, while those who trade in assault weapons will receive $200 gift cards.  Free lock boxes and trigger locks will also be distributed while supplies last. https://patch.com/california/oceanside-camppendleton/trade-guns-gift-cards-gun-safety-event-san-diegos-north-county

SPORTS

In the NFL – Last night in Denver, the Broncos defense shone brightly.  If their offense had a little more punch, it wouldn’t have been so close.  Denver beat the Raiders 10-7.  All Las Vegas managed was one 4-yard rush touchdown.  Denver tied it up just before halftime and only managed a field goal in the second half.  Stats were very even.  Denver committed two turnovers.  One for Las Vegas.  Sunday’s dozen games include the Rams at San Francisco at 1:30p on Fox and the Chargers hosting Pittsburgh at 5p on NBC.

Former NFL star Antonio Brown has decided not to contest his extradition to Miami on an attempted murder charge.  He’s currently in jail in New Jersey after his arrest by federal marshals in Dubai where he’d been living for several months.  Brown is accused of grabbing a handgun from a security guard after a celebrity boxing batch May 16 and firing two shots at a man he’d quarreled with earlier.  Brown wasn’t identified as the shooter until five days later.  Second degree attempted murder carries a maximum 15-year prison sentence and up to a $10k fine.  Brown has had other criminal charges filed against him over the years including battery of a driver of a moving truck and several domestic violence incidents.  His playing career ended abruptly in a 2021 game when he took off his jersey, shoulder pads and gloves and ran off the field, causing Tampa Bay to release him from the team. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46883311/antonio-brown-waives-extradition-return-miami

In Major League Baseball – Japanese star third baseman Munetaka Murakami announced today that he is becoming a free agent this winter.  His 45-day window to sign with a team in the Majors starts tomorrow.  https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46882311/sources-japanese-home-run-king-munetaka-murakami-posts

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down again today.  The Dow fell a third of a percent.  The S&P 500 was down 6 tenths.  And the Nasdaq was off by 1.1%.  Tech stocks are having their worst week since the “Liberation Day” selloff in April.  Gold gained $22.20 on the Comex, trading at $4,013.30 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures gained 27 cents to $59.70 a barrel.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said in a press conference that the decision to cut 4% of domestic commercial flights today before ramping up to 10% is a preemptive measure to reduce strain on air traffic control.  These employees are required to continue working during the government shutdown with a promise of retroactive pay.  But history has shown that when this scenario occurs, absences increase among air traffic control – a service that is already stretched dangerously thin.  Industry analysts say regional fights will be the ones most affected by cuts.  All major carriers have offered full refunds for any ticket, even the ones not normally refundable.  The cutback will have at least some effect on almost all flights.  Experts are saying to arrive for domestic flights at least two hours before departure and three hours before international flights, as cancelled flights will have a ripple effect throughout the industry.  There will also likely be more flight delays than usual. www.usatoday.com

Wins at the polls on Tuesday have emboldened Democrats to dig in on issues that are perpetuating the government shutdown rather than seek compromise.  The biggest issue is still reassurances about expiring benefits under the Affordable Healthcare Plan.  The shutdown appears even more likely to continue as the U.S. Senate remains deadlocked.  www.cnn.com

A Rhode Island federal judge ruled yesterday that the Trump administration must fully fund food stamp (SNAP) benefits for all recipients for the month of November, and do it right away – as in no later than today.  The administration has appealed the ruling that Vice President J.D. Vance called “absurd”. www.cnn.com

Tesla CEO Elon Musk achieved his long sought after great big pay package.  The $1 trillion package was approved with 75% support at yesterday’s annual meeting.  He’d threatened to leave Tesla if he didn’t get what he wanted.  At least one news source called it extortion.  There are quite a few hurdles for Musk to clear in order to get the full pay package.  Over the next decade, Tesla needs to achieve a market value of $8.5 trillion.  It’s currently under $1.5 trillion.  It also needs to produce 20m vehicles – that’s almost a 20% increase over current production which had leveled off and even declined a little in the past two years.  Tesla will need to secure 10m full self-driving (FSD) subscriptions, and develop one million humanoid robots.  There are other financial qualifiers as well.  Musk will be paid shares in the company at 12 points over the next decade and those shares can’t be sold for at least 7 ½ years after they’re granted to him.  It appears the future of Tesla is all tied to one man, who at minimum will get paid tens of billions no matter how the company performs. https://www.cnn.com/2025/11/06/business/musk-trillion-dollar-pay-package-vote

Last month was the worst October for layoffs in over two decades.  Companies reported laying off 153k workers last month.  That’s nearly triple the amount laid off in September.  Warehouses cut the most, followed by tech.  Companies cited the need to cut costs as the top reason for layoffs.  Automation was second.  www.morningbrew.com

As the investigation into the $100m jewelry heist from the Louvre museum in Paris continues, a clue to how they thieves did it has emerged.  In 2014, an audit of the museum’s security system revealed that the password for access to video surveillance at that time was … “Louvre”.  www.morningbrew.com

On this day in music history – November 7,

  • 1951 Frank Sinatra married the second of his four wives, actress Ava Gardner.  They split two years later and divorced in 1957.
  • In 1967, Reg Dwight and song writing partner Bernie Taupin signed with DJM publishing.  Their signatures had to be witnessed by their parents because they were both under 21.  Five years later, Reg legally changed his name to Elton John.
  • On the same day, The Beatles finished recording “Blue Jay Way”, “Flying” and “Magical Mystery Tour”, making a total of six songs available for a double EP.  Capitol records didn’t think the format would be acceptable in the U.S. and instead added five of the Beatles’ six singles released already that year.  The singles made up Side Two of the album “Magical Mystery Tour”.
  • In 1969, the Rolling Stones kicked off their 6th North American Tour.  Also on the bill – Ike and Tina Turner, Chuck Berry and B.B. King.
  • In 1975, Elton John began the first of three weeks at #1 on the album chart with “Rock of the Westies” which included the #1 hit “Island Girl”, released just before the album.
  • In 1987, Bruce Springsteen’s “Tunnel of Love” album was released.  It went triple-platinum and included one of his biggest singles, “Brilliant Disguise”.
  • In 1991, guitarist Izzy Stradlin quit Guns N’ Roses citing Axl Rose’s personal behavior and difficulties being around the other members now that he was sober.
  • In 2012, one woman died and 19 other people were injured when a scaffolding collapsed in high winds just before a Linkin Park concert in Cape Town, South Africa.  The concert went on as scheduled with the band not told about the death until afterwards.
  • In 2014, Bruce Springsteen offered his acoustic guitar for auction at the Stand Up For Heroes event.  When the bidding hit $60k, he threw in a guitar lesson.  That raised the bidding to $250k, at which point he threw in a lasagna dinner at his home, a ride around the block in the sidecar of his motorcycle and literally, the shirt off his back. Two wealthy fans won the bidding with $300k going to the Bob Woodruff Foundation for returning injured servicemen.
