LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

It looks like the longest federal government shutdown in history may end this week.  A group of eight Democratic Senators broke ranks and joined Republicans last night on a spending agreement to end the shutdown, now in its 41st day.  Last night’s 60-40 test vote was a first step.  Now come Senate debate over the bill before passage along with debate and approval by the House of Representatives, and finally, President Trump’s signature.  The new bill would fund the government only through January and would grant federal workers back pay.  It would also reverse the layoffs of federal workers made during the shutdown.  It would not automatically extend health care tax credits set to expire at the end of the year – which had been a deal-breaker with Democrats up until now.  That would be voted on separately, later by both houses.  The defecting Democrats said the shutdown had become unsustainable and was hurting too many people.  Two of the most obvious ways were airport flight cancellations and slowdowns, and the suspension of food stamps. www.NYTimes.com

SPORTS

In the NFL – The Chargers handed Aaron Rodgers and Pittsburgh an unexpectedly lopsided loss, beating the Steelers 25-10 yesterday.  The Rams beat the 49er in San Francisco 42-26.  Other Week 10 winners yesterday were Chicago, Miami, Baltimore, New England, New Orleans, Houston, Seattle, Detroit, the New York Jets and Indianapolis in overtime 31-25 against Atlanta.  The Colts remain tied with Denver and New England for best record in the league at 8 and 2.  Tonight on ABC, it’s Green Bay hosting Philadelphia.

The Giants this morning fired head coach Brian Daboll after his team blew yet another double-digit lead in the fourth quarter in yesterday’s loss to Da Behrs.  The Giants were 9-7-1 under Daboll during his first season with them in 2022.  But since then, they’ve gone 11 and 33 – the second-worst record in the NFL during that span.  They’re 2 and 8 so far this season.   https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46918387/brian-daboll-giants-coach-bears-loss

In college football – The top six teams all won on Saturday.  #8 Texas Tech knocked off #7 BYU 29-7.  Other surprises included unranked Wake Forest beating #14 Virginia 16-9.  Unraked Cal topped #15 Louisville 29-26 in overtime.  Unranked Wisconsin beat #23 Washington 13-10.  Hawai’i routed San Diego State 38-6 at Snapdragon Stadium.  Nebraska beat UCLA 28-21.

In the NBA – Yesterday’s winners were Houston, New York, Boston, Oklahoma City, Golden State, Minnesota and Detroit with the sixth win in a row.  Nine games tonight including the Lakers at Charlotte and the Clippers hosting Atlanta.

In college basketball – San Diego State won its second game of the season yesterday, hosting Idaho State.  Final score 73-57.  Last Tuesday’s game had been an even bigger rout.  They have time off before hosting Troy a week from tomorrow. https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/team/schedule/_/id/21

In the minors – The San Diego Gulls played two games against the Ontario Reign over the weekend, winning 6-4 at Pechanga Arena Friday and losing 4-3 in overtime Saturday at Ontario.  Their next game is Friday hosting Bakersfield.

In Major League Baseball – Two Cleveland Guardians pitchers have been indicted for allegedly throwing specific pitches in an arrangement with a gambler, who would compensate them after winning prop bets.  The charges came from the same US Attorney’s office that charged several NBA figures with similar betting collusion crimes last month.  Prosecutors named Cleveland’s Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz for having helped gamblers win $450k by wagering on pitches.  Both have been on non-disciplinary paid leave since July when the investigation began.  Ortiz was arrested Sunday.  Clase, a three-time All Star and two-tome American League Reliever of the Year collected $4.5m in salary in this, the fourth of a five-year contract.  Both players lawyers deny all charges, which upon conviction could lead to jail terms of up to 20 years.  https://apnews.com/article/mlb-baseball-gambling-ortiz-clase-a6db1ff46523e2ffa16d84ca427cf7c1

Pfizer has won the bidding war to acquire obesity and metabolic disease drug startup company, Metsera.  Pfizer had to abandon its own weight loss medications after trial patients experienced significant side effects.  Founded in 2022, Metsara had its IPO in January when its new drugs were in trial.  Pfizer offered $7.3b for the upstart in September.  But Novo Nordisk made an unsolicited bid of $9b last month, as much to thwart Pfizer’s plans as to acquire the drug maker for itself.  Pfizer upped its offer to $10b, which Metsera accepted on Friday.  www.morningbrew.com

Visa and Mastercard are close to a settlement of a 20-year legal dispute with merchants that could lower transaction fees.  Under the deal, merchants would not have to accept every type of credit card offered by Visa and Mastercard.  They could refuse rewards cards, which cost them more to process because the rewards are funded in part by higher interchange fees.  This ongoing dispute is the reason more and more merchants have been charging credit card processing fees in recent years.  www.morningbrew.com
