The following items are part of the award-winning “Pala Today” newscast heard this day at noon on PALA REZ RADIO™ 91.3 FM in Pala.
LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
About 60 homeless people were evicted from Escondido Creek near Citricado Parkway yesterday as cleanup of the heavily polluted area began. They’d been camping there for the past year. The city council unanimously signed off on the action in emergency session yesterday. With only 15 shelter beds available in the city, most of the 60 had nowhere to go. This cleanup was unrelated to the US Supreme Court ruling earlier this year that allowed Escondido and several other cities in San Diego County to enact camping bans regardless of whether alternate shelter was available. The city council also approved $4m to install fencing along the creek and remove thick foliage that hid the tents. The 60 who’d been living in filth in the creek represent about 15% of the city’s homeless population. https://www.10news.com/news/local-news/north-county-news/escondido-sweeps-homeless-encampment-near-creek-no-shelter-beds-available
Pala Fire Department would like you to have plenty of notice that they plan a 12-acre prescribed burn on Warners Ranch, along the north side of Highway 76 just west of Pala on Tuesday, January 7. It’ll last all that day, but will only happen if weather permits. Prevailing winds make it likely it’ll be smoky and smell like fire in Pala and areas to the east for the duration of the burn. Units from Pauma Reservation Fire, North County Fire, Rincon Reservation Fire, San Pasqual Reservation Fire, Valley Center Fire, La Jolla Reservation Fire, Cal Fire, the Forest Service and State Parks will be helping during the burn. We’ll keep you updated once there’s consensus on the weather forecast for January 7. (communication from Pala Fire)
Pala did get several hundredths of an inch of rain at the end of last week. But there hasn’t been much more than that for the rest of the season so far. And it’s looking like there won’t be until at least January. San Diego – specifically the city, which is the only place in the county for which records go back that far – is off to the third driest start of a rainy season in 152 years. The city has only had 13 hundredths of an inch since October 1. In 2017, the three-month total was 9 hundredths. In 1929, it was only a trace. Another weak Santa Ana today through Thursday will keep it dry this week. It’ll also bring highs into the mid-80s tomorrow. The full forecast is coming up. Members of the Teamsters union have voted to authorize a strike at three unionized Amazon facilities, but the union has not announced a strike deadline. The retail giant says its operations will not be affected by a Teamsters strike. Although the union claims representation of over 7k Amazon workers nationwide, that’s still less than 1% of the company’s US workforce. The locations affected by any possible strike are Staten Island and Queens, New York and Skokie, Illinois. Amazon has a strong anti-union stance and doesn’t recognize the Teamsters as officially representing any of its workers. The company is still in a court battle over the 2022 Staten Island election unionizing that facility. https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/17/business/teamsters-amazon-strike-threat/index.html
Taco Bell is venturing out of its comfort zone with a new limited time menu item – chicken nuggets. The category is dominated by McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Chick-Fil-A. But with younger consumers favoring chicken over red meat, Taco Bell is adding a spicy spin to nuggets breading them with jalapeño buttermilk and a combination of tortilla chips and breadcrumbs. New dips and sauces are being added for the nuggets. Currently, one in four orders at Taco Bell are from the “Chicken Cantina Menu”. It’s been seven years since Taco Bell tried offering anything closely resembling chicken nuggets. https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/17/food/taco-bell-chicken-nuggets/index.html

The Federal Trade Commission has announced a final rule banning hidden junk fees charged to consumers by ticketing and short-term rental companies, among others. It doesn’t limit the added fees sellers can charge for products or services. But it does require businesses to display the total price including all additional fees, more prominently than any other pricing information or face financial penalties. The FTC approved the rule with bipartisan support. The only dissenting vote was commissioner Andrew Ferguson, who is President-elect Trump’s pick to replace current FTC chair, Lina Khan. His objection had more to do with the rule being enacted under the Biden administration and not a month from now under Trump. The FTC’s rule will ensure more transparent pricing information before consumers hit the “pay” button and will take effect in 120 days. https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/17/business/ftc-junk-fee-ban/index.html
Among commemorative stamps being issued by the US Postal Service in 2025 are a group celebrating Native American Powwows. Dance and festive regalia will be depicted on the stamps designed from original paintings of four powwow dancers by Cochiti Pueblo artist Mateo Romero. USPS art director, Antonio Alcala designed the stamps. Other collector’s edition stamps coming out in 2025 include “Spiral Galaxy” and “Star Cluster”, each celebrating exploration of deep space, and Freshwater Fishing Lures, dedicated to the 55m million anglers that fish for recreation on America’s lakes, rivers and oceans each year. On this day in music history – December 17,
- 1960, The Beatles returned from their first set of gigs in Hamburg without bass player Stu Sutcliffe. He stayed behind with his German girlfriend who also gave the boys their signature haircuts. Stu was replaced by Chas Newby who only lasted two weeks and four performances. After that the quintet became a quartet with Paul switching to bass.
- In 1963, James Carroll at WWDC became the first American disc jockey to play a Beatles record. He’d gotten it from his flight attendant girlfriend. It became so popular, the station played it hourly every day as did other stations that Carroll shared it with. Capitol Records considered suing, but thought better and released the single “I Want To Hold Your Hand” sooner than planned to take advantage of the free publicity.
- In 1971, David Bowie released his fourth album “Hunky Dory”, which was the first to feature all the members of the band that would become known the following year as The Spiders From Mars, the backing band for Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust persona. Two singles were released from the album: ‘Changes” in January 1972 and ‘Life on Mars’ which was released late June 1973.
- In 1982, Karen Carpenter did her last live show when she performed in Sherman Oaks. Carpenter suffered from anorexia nervosa, the eating disorder which was a little-known illness at the time. She died of complications from her illness at the age of 32 from heart failure, on February 4, 1983.
- In 1994, a remixed version of The Four Seasons’ “December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)” re-entered the US Hot 100, where it stayed for another 27 weeks, just as it did when it first charted in 1976. The combined run established a record for the longest total chart appearance ever for a hit single.
- In 2004, Elvis Presley’s daughter Lisa Marie Presley agreed to sell 85% of his estate to businessman Robert Sillerman in a deal worth $100m. Sillerman would operate Presley’s Memphis home Graceland as a tourist attraction, and own Elvis’ name and the rights to all revenue from his music and films. Lisa Marie would retain ownership of Graceland and many of her father’s ‘personal effects.
- In 2012, Adelewas named Billboard’s top artist of 2012, while her hit record “21” was named top album of the year in the music magazine’s annual review. The 24-year-old became the first to receive both accolades two years in a row. The year’s top three songs were Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know’, Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe’ and Fun’s ‘We Are Young’.
