The following items are part of the award-winning “Pala Today” newscast heard this day at noon on PALA REZ RADIO™ 91.3 FM in Pala.
LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS
It’s getting closer to a Republican sweep in the federal election a week ago. The House of Representatives, which already had a Republican majority is currently three seats short of retaining that majority. As final vote counts continue, the GOP has won 215 of the 218 needed. Three more would give Republicans full control of the federal government next year – Presidency, Senate and House. Some would say that control extends to the Supreme Court as well due to the majority appointments made during the first Trump administration. Nine of the undecided races for Representative are in California, where mail-in ballots postmarked by November 5 are still being processed and counted. California’s process for final tally is the lengthiest of any state. ohttps://www.cbsnews.com/news/house-results-2024-seats-undecided/
Yesterday afternoon’s update on the race for mayor of Oceanside showed a narrowing lead for Councilmember Ryan Keim. His previous lead of 591 votes over incumbent Mayor Esther Sanchez shrank to 239 votes. The race for city treasurer is also close. Incumbent Victor Roy led in early results. But late last week, he slipped into second place in the three-candidate race. Local business owner Phyllis Dominguez had an 800 vote lead as of yesterday. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/11/11/lead-narrows-for-keim-over-sanchez-for-oceanside-mayor/

Attempting to rebound from bankruptcy filed earlier this year along with the closure of 100 locations, Red Lobster has rolled out menu changes – seven new items and the return of two fan-favorites. The announcement was made by the chain’s 35-year old CEO yesterday on the Today show. Hush puppies and popcorn shrimp are back, along with the creation of bacon-wrapped sea scallops, lobster bisque and some new pasta dishes. Unlimited Endless Shrimp is gone because the promotion cost the chain too much money. But Lobsterfest will still happen annually. https://www.today.com/food/restaurants/red-lobster-new-menu-2024-rcna179557
Genetic testing company 23 and Me said yesterday it would cut about 40%, or 200 employees as part of a restructuring. The company’s value plummeted after a massive data breach which is still being investigated by British and Canadian authorities. 23 and Me users in the US have filed a class action lawsuit alleging the company failed to sufficiently notify users of Chinese and Jewish descent that their information was exposed. Though the company insists the data could not be used for any harm, lawyers for the plaintiffs say the ethnicity-specific nature of the breach could amount to a “hit list”. The company is also evaluating strategic alternatives since its core business of genetic testing doesn’t lend itself to repeat business. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/nov/12/23andme-layoffs

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating complaints of possible engine failures on 1.4m Honda and Acura vehicles. They’re looking at Honda Pilot and Acura MDX model years 2016 through 2020, 2018 through 2020 Honda Odyssey and Acura TLX, and 2017 through 2019 Honda Ridgelines. The NHTSA says connecting rod bearings on the 3.5-liter V6 engines can fail. Honda recalled about 250k vehicles one year ago to fix the same problem. The agency says it has 173 additional complaints from owners who reported the failure in vehicles that weren’t included in the recall. One owner reported a crash because of it. https://apnews.com/article/honda-investigation-engine-failure-recall-acura-c5169e90d6efd6a81d7aeaa9fb0ff11d
