As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down as business worries about the impact of impending tariffs under the new White House administration. The Dow lost 3 tenths of a percent. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq were each down about a quarter percent. Gold fell $9.40 on the Comex, to $2,577.10. Oil futures traded down 20 cents with the benchmark West Texas Intermediate Crude at $68.23 a barrel.
Stock prices surged following President-elect Trump’s victory, mostly over his proposed tax cuts and deregulation of industry. But bond yields also moved higher due to fear that new White House policies could accelerate inflation. https://apnews.com/article/inflation-prices-interest-rates-economy-federal-reserve-8ee9d1e7979319fe9ae121c7c8d6d68b
After two years of consistent cooling, inflation heated up a little in October thanks to higher rents, air fares, and used car prices. The economy has grown faster than expected this year – nearly a 3% annual rate over the past six months, mostly thanks to spending by higher income consumers. The Labor Department reported yesterday that consumer prices were up 2.6% from one year earlier – an increase from the 2.4% annual rate in September. Core prices, excluding food and energy were up 3.3%. Core inflation was up 0.3% for the third consecutive month. Consumers are still getting used to higher prices. Overall, they’ve risen about 20% over the past three years. A lot economists believe the Federal Reserve will make the expected quarter point cut in interest rates next month and then pause for a while to see how the effects play out. A quarter point cut will bring the total of all interest rate cuts by the Fed this year to a full percent. https://apnews.com/article/inflation-prices-interest-rates-economy-federal-reserve-8ee9d1e7979319fe9ae121c7c8d6d68b
The European Union has fined Facebook parent company, Meta $841m after its long-running investigation found the company engaged in anti-competitive behavior. Specific charges included Meta allegedly distorting competition by tying its online classified ad business to its social network, automatically exposing Facebook users to its “Marketplace” whether they wanted it or not, and effectively shutting out competitors. Meta is also accused of using data collected under the terms of service from outside advertisers to benefit its own Marketplace. Meta says it will comply with EU Commission’s order to end offending conduct, but will also appeal the ruling. https://apnews.com/article/meta-facebook-european-union-competition-fine-6886192353a344126a15886d6ca7c627

While here in the US we were celebrating Veteran’s Day on Monday, in China it was a holiday known as Singles’ Day. Over the past decade and a half, Singles’ Day has morphed into the biggest shopping day of the year in China, which also makes it an important barometer of consumer confidence in the world’s second-largest economy. But with China still in a world-wide economic downturn mostly avoided by the US, market watchers believe this will have been one of the worst Singles’ Day retail performances since the tradition began in 2009. www.morningbrew.com
