LOCAL AND REGIONAL NEWS

A driver was arrested for suspicion of DUI after a vehicle went off DeLuz Road just after midnight last night.  CHP noted that the vehicle went part way down a hillside, but its headlights could be seen from the roadway.  No other vehicles involved and no report of injuries.   https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/11/13/news/driver-arrested-on-suspicion-of-dui-after-car-goes-off-de-luz-road/80443.html

Lt. Glen Twyman is the new station commander at the San Diego Sheriff’s Fallbrook Substation, which serves a 137-square-mile patrol area with 52k residents in Fallbrook, Bonsall, Rainbow and DeLuz, averaging over 10k service calls per year.  Twyman has been with the department for 25 years including assignments with Cal Fire, the County Office of Emergency Services and the San Diego Central jail.  He’d previously been at the Fallbrook substation as a sergeant in 2010. https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/11/13/news/new-lieutenant-takes-command-at-fallbrook-substation/80428.html

The Fallbrook Public Utility District voted late last month to prepare a request for proposals to replace the liner of Red Mountain Reservoir.  Originally built in the 1940s, it was expanded and lined in 1985, making it the largest drinking water reservoir in the county.  The existing reservoir liner is now reaching the end of its useful life.  https://www.villagenews.com/story/2025/11/13/news/fpud-staff-to-evaluate-red-mountain-reservoir-rehabilitation/80430.html

A recent study by Beach.com of photos found on Instagram found that Carlsbad is among the happiest U.S. beach cities of its size.  One hundred towns and cities within 25 miles of a coast and with fewer than 250k residents were analyzed.  Carlsbad ranked 10th, with Oceanside close behind at #13.  For some reason, Beach.com said cities including Solana Beach, Encinitas, and Del Mar didn’t meet population and location criteria.  But San Marcos and Escondido did, ranking 22nd and 37th respectively. https://thecoastnews.com/ai-backed-study-shows-carlsbad-among-happiest-us-coastal-cities/

Pala weather will be at least cloudy if not also wet for up to the next five days with the heaviest rain expected tomorrow – to up 2 inches.  The full forecast is coming up. (below)

SPORTS

In the NFL – Last night the Patriots beat the visiting Jets 27-14.  It was their 8th straight win after only winning four games total in each of the last two seasons.  TreVeyon Henderson scored all three touchdowns for New England.  Kicker Andy Borregales made all three extra points and put over two field goals in the fourth quarter.  New York racked up three times as many penalties and had 50% fewer first downs as New England.  Sunday’s schedule includes the Chargers at Jacksonville at 10a on CBS and the Rams hosting Seattle at 1p on Fox.

In college football – Tomorrow’s highlights include #9 Notre Dame at #22 Pittsburgh at 9a on ABC, #4 Alabama hosting #11 Oklahoma at 12:30p on ABC, #17 USC hosting #21 Iowa on BTN at 12:30p, #1 Ohio State hosting UCLA at 4:30p on NBC, and San Diego State hosting Boise State at 7:30p on CBS Sports.

A judge has denied the Rose Bowl and the city of Pasadena’s request for a temporary restraining order to prevent UCLA from leaving the 102-year old Rose Bowl to play its home football games at much-more-modern SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, which is 13 miles closer to campus.  SoFi also offers more premium seating and luxury seats, which could boost UCLA’s revenue, especially since the current lease with the Rose Bowl gives most of the income from premium seating and concession to the city of Pasadena.  The university has yet to announce the move, but everyone’s expecting it.  The city is suing to enforce the current lease which runs through 2044.  Fans are divided.  Many feel the nostalgia for remaining at the Rose Bowl, but acknowledge its drawbacks including less-than-ideal seating and long walks to just about anywhere you need to be.  Yet, a lot of them think moving would rip the soul out of UCLA’s football program. https://www.pressenterprise.com/2025/11/13/really-upsetting-ucla-football-fans-react-to-possible-rose-bowl-exodus

In the NBA – Just 3 games last night.  Toronto beat the Cavaliers in Cleveland 126-113.  Phoenix routed the visiting Pacers 133-98.  In spite of Lauri Markkanen’s 40 points, Atlanta lost at Utah 132-122.  Nine games tonight including the Lakers at New Orleans and the Clippers at Dallas.

In college basketball – Purdue defended its #2 ranking, beating #8 Alabama 87-80.  Among tonight’s games, USC hosts Illinois State, #5 Arizona is at #15 UCLA, and #19 Gonzaga is at Arizona State.

In hockey – The Kings beat the Maple Leafs in Toronto 4-3 in overtime.  Detroit beat the visiting Ducks 6-3.  Other winners were Dallas, Ottawa, Florida, Columbus, Colorado, Calgary, Seattle and the New York Islanders 4-3 in overtime over the Golden Knights in Las Vegas.  Four games tonight.

In the minors – The San Diego Gulls next game is tonight hosting Bakersfield.

In Major League Baseball – The Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani was yesterday’s unanimous choice for National League MVP for the fourth consecutive year.  Philadelphia’s Kyle Schwarber earned 23 of the second place votes from the Baseball Writers’ Association.  https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/46958495/dodgers-shohei-ohtani-wins-fourth-mvp-award-five-seasons

In Major League Soccer – The conference semifinals begin a week from tomorrow, the 22nd with LAFC at Vancouver.  San Diego hosts Minnesota on Monday the 24th.

In golf – At the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda, with half the field still on the course for round 2, Adam Hadwin led by one stroke into the clubhouse at 11-under par. https://www.espn.com/golf/leaderboard

In local high school sports:

Bonsall – no scheduled games

Great Oak – cross country at CIF prelims all day today and tomorrow; girls’ tennis at CIF team finals all day today; boys’ wrestling at Indio at noon today and 9a tomorrow; varsity football at Villa Park for CIF Division IV Round 2 at 7p

Fallbrook – no scheduled games

Valley Center – football hosting Mira Mesa at 7p in the Division IV quarter finals; Tomorrow – CIF cross country finals at Morley Field in San Diego.
