SPORTS

In the NFL – Jacksonville routed the visiting Chargers 35-6.  The Rams edged the visiting Seahawks 21-19. Seattle had played catch-up the entire game, scoring a touchdown with 2 ½ minutes left.  But that was all.  Seattle’s Sam Darnold passed for twice as many yards as Matt Stafford, but was intercepted four times and had no touchdowns compared to Stafford’s’ two.  Seattle dominated most of the stats including 15 minutes more time of possession.  Yesterday’s other winners were Buffalo, Houston, Chicago, Green Bay, Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Baltimore, Denver, Philadelphia and two overtime games – Miami over Washington 16-13 and Carolina over Atlanta 30-27.

New York Jets cornerback and special teams player Kris Boyd is in serious but stable condition today after being shot in midtown Manhattan just after 2a yesterday.  Boyd has been on injured reserve since August 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery.  He’d signed with the Jets in March.  Investigators are still looking for the shooter. https://apnews.com/article/kris-boyd-jets-shot-new-york-5f98dff2c8a51ec14ba83794d0c9974d

BUSINE$$

As of midday trading on Wall Street, stocks were down slightly.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell a tenth.  The S&P 500 was down less than a tenth. And the Nasdaq was just barely negative.  Gold fell $12.80 on the Comex, trading at $4,081.40 an ounce.  West Texas Intermediate Crude oil futures were down five cents to $60.04 a barrel.

According to financial disclosures made public on Saturday, President Trump bought at least $82m in corporate and municipal bonds between late August and early October.  They included new investments in sectors benefitting from his administration’s policies including financial deregulation.  Because the 1978 Ethics in Government Act does not require listing exact amounts, those investments could be worth as much as $337m.  Trump acquired Intel bonds after the U.S. Government, under his direction acquired a stake in the company.  Other specific investments include Broadcom, Qualcomm, Home Depot, CVS Health, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley.  The White House maintains that Trump has no role in running his investment portfolio – that it is managed by a third-party financial institution.  But his disclosure reports show the income still ultimately goes to him, raising concerns about conflicts of interest. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/15/trump-buys-82-million-in-bonds-since-late-august.html

The air traffic controller shortage during the government shutdown caused the cancellation of thousands of flights, affecting the travel plans for more than 5m people.  But even with partial pay hitting controllers’ bank accounts on Friday, the staffing problem will continue and possibly get worse because of the shutdown.  The problem is that air traffic controllers are required to work without pay – just the promise of back-pay whenever government is disrupted.  But with 2 out of five American workers living paycheck-to-paycheck, many air traffic controllers can’t afford to work without pay.  That led to many calling in sick, so they could work second jobs that did pay.  Knowing this will happen makes it hard to recruit new air traffic controllers.  Add to that, about twice as many as normal chose retirement during the shutdown.  A government tally last year showed the U.S. was short of its goal of 14,633 air traffic controllers by almost 4k.  The shortages tend to be worst at the busiest airports, like New York.  The FAA lowered its mandatory flight cuts from 6% to 3% on Saturday.  On Friday, for the first time since cuts went into effect, flights cancelled were fewer than the FAA mandate. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/15/government-shutdown-air-traffic-controllers.html

Ford today announced a partnership with Amazon that will let its dealers sell certified preowned vehicles through the online retail giant.  Buyers can secure financing, start paperwork and schedule a pickup time at participating Ford dealers.  Signing papers and taking delivery still needs to be at the dealer.  Amazon struck a similar deal with Hertz earlier this year. About 160 of Ford’s 2,900 dealers are diving in.  About a dozen in Los Angeles, Seattle and Dallas have already launched the program which only offers certified preowned vehicles.  It is still illegal in most states for franchised dealers to sell new vehicles directly to consumers. https://www.cnbc.com/2025/11/17/ford-amazon-used-vehicles.html

LIFESTYLE / GREEN LIVING

Over the weekend at the movies, there was some real competition for ticket dollars.  The winner was “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t”, the third episode in the franchise about the world’s greatest sleight of hand artists.  It collected $21.3m through ticket sales, beating the weekend’s other major release, “The Running Man” which earned $17m.  Last week’s top film, “Predator: Badlands” dropped to third place, selling another $13m in tickets.  It was followed by “Regretting You” which is now in its fourth week in theaters, “Black Phone 2”, “Nuremberg, and the debut of “Keeper” on just 2k screens.  Total movie attendance for the weekend was a little less than last week and below average for the year. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2025W46/

It was economics that killed the penny, which stopped being minted last week.  Some are wondering if the nickel isn’t far behind.  The main reason for the penny’s demise was that it cost four cents to make one.  But it costs 9 cents to make a nickel.  Pennies were just copper-coated zinc.  A copper penny was really only about 2 ½% copper.  Zinc prices haven’t risen much since 2016.  But copper and nickel prices have doubled over that same time.  And nickels are 75% copper and 25% nickel.  The U.S. Mint and one of its suppliers are looking into metal blends that would reduce the cost of nickels down to no more than what they’re worth.  That could be accomplished within a year.  But then there’s also the question of how useful the nickel will continue to be moving forward.  Americans are using coins less and less often, even when paying cash.  Ironically, using them less reduces the pressure to drop them from production, as does lowering the cost of making them.  Banks and credit card companies would love a cashless society – no coins to deal with and a profitable transaction fee every time a card gets swiped.  Going cashless would hit low-income consumers the hardest.  Coin collecting nostalgia may slow the move towards eliminating nickels, but experts think it’ll still happen within 20 years. https://www.cnn.com/2025/11/16/business/penny-nickel-discontinue-currency
