The lead in the vote count for Mayor of Oceanside has changed. As of yesterday, incumbent Mayor Esther Sanchez is now leading Councilmember Ryan Keim by 31 votes with just over 50% of the votes counted, according to the San Diego County Registrar of Voters. Other Oceanside results remained unchanged as of Friday night, when the Registrar said a total of 56k ballots across the county remained to be counted. Some may have spent days in the mail after being postmarked by Election Day. Others may be missing a signature, which the Registrar allows the voter time to correct. Final results won’t be certified until December 5. https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/2024/11/15/incumbent-oceanside-mayor-leads-challenger-for-first-time-with-new-results/

But the Chargers broke that rally thanks to a 29-yard touchdown run by J.K. Dobbins with 18 seconds left in the game to beat the Bengals 34-27. Total yards and first downs were about the same between the two teams and the Chargers committed the only turnover. But Cincinnati held the ball 8 minutes longer than LA. Some economists are blaming the stock market jitters this morning and in recent trading sessions on President-elect Trump’s choice of either banker Howard Lutnick or investor Scott Bessent as Treasury secretary. But the chances for either of them being picked stalled over the weekend, and the search has reportedly widened to include former Federal Reserve governor Kevin Warsh and billionaire Marc Rowan. Treasury Secretary is one of the more important cabinet positions since it involves serving as the principal advisor to the president on economic and fiscal policy. https://www.newsweek.com/donald-trump-treasury-secretary-candidates-1987342
Brendan Carr, who wrote the chapter on the Federal Communications Commission in the conservative “Project 2025” playbook is President-elect Trump’s choice to head up that agency. In that publication, Carr had said the FCC should prioritize “reining in Big Tech, promoting national security, unleashing economic prosperity, and ensuring FCC accountability and good governance.” He also wrote that TikTok should be banned if it fails to disentangle from its parent company, which is based in China. The FCC has five commissioners who each serve five-year terms. Only three can be from the same party. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-brendan-carr-federal-communications-commission-rcna180567

Over the weekend at the movies, “Red One” was number one, earning $34m in ticket sales in its first week of wide release. It displaced “Venom: The Last Dance” which dropped to second place with $7.3m on 500 fewer screens than last week. “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” remained in third place. “Heretic” dropped from 2nd to 4th. After eight weeks, “The Wild Robot” is still in the Top 5. “Hello, Love, Again” opened in 8th place on just 248 screens with the best per-screen average of any movie this past weekend. The total for the Top Ten movies was up slightly from the last two weekends, which were considerably below the average for this year. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/2024W46/?ref_=bo_wey_table_3
The Centers for Disease Control has posted a Food Safety Alert after a multi-state e coli outbreak linked to organic carrots. 39 people in 18 states including California have reported being infected. Fifteen were hospitalized and one died. The source has been traced to Grimmway Farms which has now recalled dozens of brands and sizes of organic whole and baby carrots. But some may still be in people’s homes. They should be disposed of. Anyone with e coli symptoms – stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting should seek medical help even though most people recover without treatment in 5 to 7 days. Here’s a link for the list of carrot brands involved in the recall. https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2024/a1117-ecoli-organic-carrots.html
In an example of how difficult it is to achieve and maintain market in the retail space, Tropicana juices’ new bottle design has cost the company some of its business. Over the summer, the company rolled out new squared-off bottles more similar to other brands along with redesigned labels. Consumer reaction has been negative, with many saying the thinner neck at the top of the round bottle, often referred to as a carafe made it easier to pour. But the last straw with consumers may be what has already come back to bite other companies. The new bottle is smaller – downsized from 52 to 46 ounces. Even though prices were supposed to decrease along with the new smaller size, many stores are not following Tropicana’s pricing recommendations and shrinkflation-sensitive shoppers have noticed. By October, Tropicana sales were down 19% and the brand had lost about 4 market share points to Simply Orange, which is owned by Coca-Cola. https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2024/11/18/business/tropicana-orange-juice-bottle
President-elect Trump’s transition team is planning to kill the $7,500 federal consumer tax credit for purchasing an electric vehicle. That would have the effect of a price increase on EVs and comes at a critical time for the mass-transition of the country’s vehicle fleet to electric, which already shows signs of stalling out. The credits have also been seen as a way to boost American automakers over those in China, since qualifying vehicles must be built in the U.S. with batteries sources from trade-friendly countries. Yet representatives from Tesla have said they support ending the subsidy. In July, Tesla CEO Elon Musk had said that although ending the tax credit may slightly hurt his company’s sales, it would be devastating to his competitors including GM, Ford and Rivian. https://www.mystateline.com/news/politics/trump-may-end-7500-ev-tax-credit-report/
